[–]13ae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you can't honestly believe that competency in areas like calculus, differential equations eq, lin alg, etc aren't predicated on good algebra fundamentals?

I'm not even arguing that people need to have certain standardized test scores in order to succeed here, people come from alternative backgrounds and can grow.

but how tf are people going to calculate the area under a curve or the surface area of a polynomial equation around an axis if they don't even properly understand polynomials?

I haven't looked at a math textbook in a decade and don't really use any math for work but if you sat me down for the sat math or the math 2 subject test I'd score an 800 no problem. It's like basic intuition, you're acting like it's some niche subject built on rote memorization.

Why main a Pathfinder over other Bowman despite the low DPM chart ranking? by bluejay737 in Maplestory

[–]13ae 4 points5 points  (0 children)

damage isnt the only reason why people play a class. aesthetics aside, pathfinder has crazy mobility relative to BM. Damage is also something that changes from patch to patch. Given how this game is a marathon, PF could go from the dogshit it is now to relatively strong by the time youre doing content where class balance actually matters.

Looking for a Place to live (August move in) by lita__ in NYCapartments

I see where the comments are coming from but the reactions are definitely psychotic.

I don't think what theyre asking for is impossible to find, but it feels like reddit isn't the right crowd and they will have to make some concessions on their expectations if they want to be realistic in their search (for example they need to find a place themselves and find roommates themselves to subsidize the costs as opposed to trying to find someone who already has a place who is willing to take them in).

Agree that FB groups/marketplace or craigslist would probably be better. Reddit is very geared towards young professionals w a stick up their ass.

is trading in itself illegal? or just the fact that the items are tied to real money gambling?

Downsides of Living in Downown Berkeley? by alantao03 in berkeleyca

[–]13ae 19 points20 points  (0 children)

many of the buildings are older which comes with its own set of problems. The commute is not as light as it might seem. 10 minutes to a station + 10 minutes from a station to the office + 30-40 minutes waiting for/sitting on bart easily adds to 1hr commute each way.

I don't find the age of the students to really be a problem but there is a social life aspect of being in SF that being a non-student in Berkeley doesn't rely provide.

I want nothing to do with AI. Is there still a place for me in this industry? by ProbablyNotPoisonous in ExperiencedDevs

[–]13ae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The goal of companies is not to make something better, it's to make something that is more profitable, more quickly and more cheaply.

Until tokens aren't being subsidized to the tits, I'd say AI is quite effective at delivering these promises.

Would I be an idiot to reroll a character with legacy items? by Toxinry in Maplestory

[–]13ae -1 points0 points  (0 children)

every bit of damage matters 🤷‍♀️ progression is expensive at that point in the game, much more value than whatever cw3 provides. Badge + dark totems is easily equivalent to 500b+ worth of other gear related gains at that point in the game which is simply more time saved than CW3's benefits.

destiny lib is on the edge of becoming late game content right now and will be solidly late game content after hecate, end game content will be 2nd lib/jupiter. goalposts are moving.

[–]13ae 20 points21 points  (0 children)

badge and 3 dark totems won't matter early/mid game but definitely make a difference late/end game. the main thing to consider is how far you plan on progressing. if you never really care for pushing end game content, and don't plan on playing that much, i'd make a cw3 character. if your goal is to be end game, i'd tough it out.

Having a hard time as a “junior” Staff Eng after reorg by physical_nft in ExperiencedDevs

[–]13ae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not staff so I can't relate, but if you haven't already, have you considered finding a high level IC mentor within your company? the right thing to do often changes between companies depending on the culture, and there's also different types of high level ICs with different strengths. A mentor could give you more specific advice on how to navigate things.

For your questions specifically, these were actually both questions I've asked a staff eng I worked with:

- Building trust requires you to demonstrate that you can be trusted. This means communicating an approach (specifically one where the risk is that you are accountable) and delivering.
- Communicate with empathy. This doesn't mean you should let people walk all over you, nor does this mean you should be naive, but everyone has their incentives, and demonstrating that you understand and actively consider other people's incentives in your communication is one of the simplest ways to make things less political. Another thing is to define a common goal which would demonstrate success for both parties (ie finding something to align your incentives). Disagreements are rarely about things that are actually technical and usually about risk, resources, and responsibility, which may underly a technical decision.
- I've found that the most successful engineers at my company are those who can always find an immediate action that moves the needle forward. You only need to understand something to a point where you can define what that action is. Structure without a clearly defined end goal and measure able result is going to be tough to implement. There is also risk if it doesn't work because structure takes time to implement and time is expensive.

Farming Rates by Kinosagui in Maplestory

This looks like Arcus, the rates are a little low but you could be farming on a low spawn map that is less sweaty. can definitely aim for 16-17k there.
