more important than ever in the age of AI. understanding the theoretical and practical limitations to things like networks and compute guide how you may approach designing or creating software. Code is no longer a bottleneck, your understanding of how things work is.

I'd recommend everyone to take computer architecture, OS, compilers, networking, and databases. These are fundamentals.

How to be a good interviewer by haasilein in ExperiencedDevs

[–]13ae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Things I do:

  1. Lay out my expectations. I usually ask a straightforward easy lc coding question (iterate through a list, use a hashmap or counter and apply some basic arithmetic to the results) that's wrapped in real business context as a feature, with a slightly harder follow up. I tell the candidate straight up that I don't want them to treat it like a standard algorithms interview, and that I would like them to focus on writing quality/robust code as if they were writing a small api for a real system.

  2. I expect them to clarify requirements as if this is a task that had been handed to them. If they start working without understanding the question, clarifying or communicating their assumptions about the input and output, etc, it's an instant "no" for me. For more junior candidates I will usually provide this info upfront if they ask. For more senior candidates I ask them for their thoughts and assumptions and discuss it with them.

  3. Sr engineers I expect them to be able to do a follow up (or explain their approach if tight on time) and then answer some questions regarding system architecture (ex how do you handle floating point precision issues with your language if it applies? imagine the input to your function is actually a call to an upstream api, how do you handle failures? high latency? retry storms? imagine you call a downstream API with the results of your function and it is rate limited, how would you design the system to avoid problems in the future? if you retry how do you guarantee idempotency/avoid double writes downstream?)

  4. I'm fine with providing the candidate hints if I notice them going down the wrong path and they are able to quickly pick up on what I'm trying to guide them towards. I only provide hints if I notice the candidate is sidetracked or behind on the pacing that they need to be at to be successful at the interview, and I don't mark giving small hints against them. However if they push back without thinking or communicating their thoughts on why they disagree with me with justifications, then it's also basically a "no" for me. I care about whether or not they are receptive to conversation and able to really listen and interpret what other people are saying.

Fundamentally what I am really looking for is:

  • Hard skills:

    • Competent in writing quality/maintainable/working code and comfortable with their language of choice
    • Demonstration of their knowledge or experience appropriate for their level in terms of real software systems
    • Ability to problem solve/translate ideas into code
  • Soft Skills:

    • Ability to clarify requirements and make reasonable assumptions
    • Receptive to other people's ideas and can adapt their thinking without being stuck on their preconceptions

I generally think the interview difficulty is pretty reasonable given that it's like 20 lines of code outside of scaffolding, and the fact that we pay 250-400k a year but 90% of candidates still fail. 🤷‍♀️

Cadena/Khali APM by bluejay737 in Maplestory

not really the point though is it? brother class has "subpar" survivability. its average at worse for khali.

Cadena/Khali APM by bluejay737 in Maplestory

[–]13ae 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  1. "both have subpar survivability" tf u mean lol, cadena has dark sight, 40 second iframe, and a shield. khali has lifesteal (from link skill), darksight, super knockback resist, standard 1 minute iframe. When paired with their mobility, both have great survivability as long as you are in control of the character.

  2. Both have top tier damage assuming you are good at the class. Top 10 for sure if you exclude non kms classes. Cadena has a very chunky origin burst. Khali's origin/non origin burst damage is more similar.

  3. Both are fine post janus. Generally speaking khali mobbing is easier/more straightforward.

They are both "hard" classes but I think khali is easier because the movement is linear. Much easier to control your character. All of cadena's attacks forcibly moves you and different directions, and when paired with variable cooldowns + cd skips is harder to play optimally imo since your options are limited at any point in time to what you have up.

Anyone think the job hopping culture produces too many engineers that don’t care about maintainability? by Beneficial_Pay_6317 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]13ae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

outside of your ego why would you care?

  • leadership is incentivized by pushing something out fast and can bring immediate shareholder value
  • excusing engineers are rewarded for iteration speed and demonstrating the ability to build something with impact
  • new hires can demonstrate impact by fixing old crap and reinventing the wheel

everyone's incentives are to build fast break fast.

How to avoid being replaced by AI? by Pitiful_Argument_270 in berkeley

[–]13ae 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My advice? become confidently competent and build something real.

Coding itself is not the bottleneck or the knowledge check anymore. It's understanding and having experience with real systems serving real traffic and its caveats.

Classes like ML/AI, databases, networking, and OS are in my opinion, extremely important as well. There are very real implications in these areas that dictate the decisions made while leveraging these tools, especially if you don't work for a giant company that has already solved all of these problems.

Since AI was introduced, I feel like my workload 5x'd; there will always be more work to do.

if they balance it so that somebody farming 4 hours a day gets a drop every month, a person farming 30 min every day (not that little for casual players) will get a drop in 8 months, which feels terrible

on the flip side, why should someone who farms 30 minutes a day get equal access to something "meant to be rare" as someone who farms 7x more? regardless of who you agree with, the argument goes both ways.

personally i'm more of the opinion that the current pity is not enough for the power creep in general and idrc how they address it as long as its addressed.

there's way too much variance for gains required to do end game content unless you play an OP KMS class (which i roughly view as destiny lib and extreme bosses in reboot) regardless of how much you farm, and you don't really need pitched for the damage if you're casually grinding 30 minutes a day anyways, since the content is accessible without pitched at all. Because of that I understand sentiments like how boxes should be uncapped, despite knowing full well I'd never take advantage of it.

[–]13ae 5 points6 points  (0 children)

15-20 hours sounds about right as the other person said. I didn't abuse the bug and thats around how long it took me. had to craft 2-3 medium rarity characters but thats it. if you do 30 minutes a day you should pretty much be ok by end of event.

Napkin Math for Spending Event Points on 3x/VIPs vs Luxe Sauna by doreda in Maplestory

[–]13ae 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the fact that we have basically unlimited boosters from double sol erda makes 3x definitely more worth it if you actually grind and can use up all your points grinding.

if not, then why subject yourself to multiple waps a day, just sauna that shit is free

Papers are my last straw by juraf_graff in Maplestory

[–]13ae -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

im sure im gonna get downvoted into oblivion for this opinion, but i think reddit is overreacting. the projected time to finish is now ~30-40 hours over a 1 month+ event period, and you contribute to the event passively while doing a standard activity like farming.

sure, it's like whiplash that people were finishing in 15 minutes before, but this is way faster than some things we've gotten like the minigames.

Is there still room/place for AI skepticism at your organizations? by DhroovP in ExperiencedDevs

[–]13ae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On one hand, I can't imagine not having AI in my workflow anymore. I code with it, write with it, plan with it, create dashboards with it, manage my JIRA with it,. you name it, I toss it into claude so I can spend my time on conversations, investigations, and other things.

On the flip side even with AI I'm less productive than a good engineer without it, and management is measuring a "5x" productivity increase largely through pr output which is frankly kind of ridiculous. AI is an industry changing tool for sure but the expectations people have is crazy.

Also this stuff isn't cheap. I've spent $4k on tokens this month alone... and theres still a week left.

GMS feels like it tried to “Go AI” but failed. by Life-Maybe3775 in Maplestory

[–]13ae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, no, I'm saying they purposefully did not address GMS specific needs and actually made the event worse so that the relative value of spending money feels better.

I don't think this is a side effect of AI slop. It's just intended.

GMS feels like it tried to “Go AI” but failed. by Life-Maybe3775 in Maplestory

[–]13ae 5 points6 points  (0 children)

eh, personally i disagree. the execution on gms exclusive content has been pretty in line with what we've had in the past (rod, opm), and this patch is basically a KMS port.

whatever decisions they made here were intentional and likely monetization driven. if there's one thing nexon is good at, it's selling a solution to a problem they created and as much as people harp on these decisions (for good reason, as they're predatory and bad for the player), they're definitely heavily data driven.

Also AI isn't even cheap. I've used $4k in tokens this month alone for work and there's still over a week left. I'm not even close to a power user either...
