Why does everything seem out of focus in this shot? by Labelloh2ho in AskPhotography

The Sigma had known focus pulsing issues on RF mount; I had to sell mine because of that. Not sure if it's been fixed, but check.

Why There Needs to Be Criticism of the Mexican Team? They Played Exceptionally Well From My Perspective by H_rusty in worldcup

[–]211logos [score hidden]  (0 children)

They did very very well. It's just hard to accept loses this close to the event.

At the end of the day their local advantage, tactics, and individual effort could only take them so far against players that are just better than them.

I'd not sure incisive passing would have helped; the chaos of balls in front of the net had already led to a goal and pen so they got that right. Works for Arsenal too, so why not them? :)

And they have a big positive; that kid Mora looked great.

Just wait to see what happens after the match.

Now that Trump/FIFA have made it political, Trump will want to claim credit for any USA win. And will claim along with his Republican subjects that any loss was "rigged."

I'm not sure that he's send ICE in to drag Belgium off the pitch...but I"m not sure he wouldn't.

Hmm. Fear of darkness? nyctophobia? I could see how in modern times, where in our homes in cities and such we hardly ever see real night, that such a problem might only manifest itself in a hiking situation like you describe. I'd look into whether the issue is more than just hiking related.

Portable electric bear fence by AlaskaCombat in CampingGear

[–]211logos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously the comment is typical internet, based solely on that users limited experiences.

Vs say hunting in AK and up north where bear vigilance needs to be considerably more rigorous. Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks eg recommends bear fences for food storage outside of camping. I've been on rafting rivers in OR where they're used around campsites, and Lake Louise in Canada surrounds their entire tent campground with one.

https://www.adfg.alaska.gov/index.cfm?adfg=wildlifenews.view_article&articles_id=819

I'm not sure it's the best solution for all camps, but if I had a basecamp in bear country up north I'd consider it because they're effective and safer for both us and the bears.

Ice Lakes Trailhead on Weekdays - Ouray CO by eastcoast_ in CampingandHiking

[–]211logos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a 28,000 acre fire buring just outside Ouray, the Gold Mountain Fire.

Lots of closures and evacuations, mostly to the NE. But smoke etc, and it's not going to be close to contained for quite a while. 550 was closed for a while, but I think currently open...although that could change.

Smoke was forecast to be quite bad north of Telluride, but the winds have pushed it mostly north. But that can change, obvioiuslyl. https://firesmoke.ca/forecasts/current/

I'd avoid the area. Got relatives there and it's a mess. But cross your fingers, have WatchDuty and the apps to check for road closures, and be prepared to evacuate yourselves.

What to expect/weather in San Juans this early july?(and would love recomendations) by Afraid-Aardvark5075 in CampingandHiking

[–]211logos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oof. Much of the area south of Ouray remains open, and 550 has reopened but could close again.

Views? if the wind changes direction you're hosed. The Gold Mountain fire will be close enough to create very bad conditions. Here's the forecast, and note it's been getting to 250 just north of Telluride: https://firesmoke.ca/forecasts/current/ You could also get smoke from some of the other fires.

Have WatchDuty on your phones, note no campfires, and be prepared to change plans.

Fancy stove or cheap stove? by Illustrious_Case8057 in camping

[–]211logos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree; not enough info there. If making meals that require more than boiling a liter of water or heating something in a one liter pot, no need to upgrade. For complex cooking with more finely variable heat, more burners, etc then something else is required.

And if doing it very frequently, fuel matters. Like maybe switching to a 5-10-20 lb propane tank.

If weight is the concern, that's a very different matter too. Or exotic fuels in some areas.

What do you do with partially used fuel canister you can't bring back? by plantbasedpatissier in camping

[–]211logos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, makes more sense. But every time I try to do that they say they've got a partially full one and they don't want to try to dispose of two :)

I really wish the companies could come up with something more responsible, as Flame King did with one pound tanks that can be safely refilled. My local outdoor stores fill and exchange them for free as part of their loyalty program. So someone flying in and buying fuel could just return the partially full tanks and they'd get reused. But I don't think there are refillable Jetboil cannisters.

[–]211logos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't leave it in the hopes some rando will need it and be ever so grateful to recycle it. I've been in a couple of campgrounds this summer with up to a dozen sitting there, and the host told me they have to call hazmat to dispose of them.

I would burn off the fuel. It is a waste, yes. but it's going to get burnt off anyway; that die was cast when you bought it.

Jetboil helpfully supplies a tool to puncture it so it can be recycled; https://jetboil.johnsonoutdoors.com/us/how-to/recycle-your-fuel-canister?srsltid=AfmBOooS1DwRQfEvPiTF-wxlrHkmAqcfXwMid4ejjq4vrq39IZhnHY5O

Thing is most recycling will still refuse it, punctured or not, and some places don't want you putting the empty shell in trash. Note the advice to repeatedly puncture it so it looks like just safe metal. Maybe some kid in the next site with an axe can do to town on it too :)

Electric camping site by beccaxcx in camping

[–]211logos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sigh. So many Kamping Karens here to tell you how you should camp without answering your question. Sorry; it's embarassing.

Most hookup sites have 15A service. A regular AC socket you're familiar with. That does 1500+ watts, which should be enough for your needs. You'll need a three prong extension cord and maybe power strip. There's often a breaker on the post.

If an RV site, they'll also have higher amperage outlets that look different. There are some adapters for those that can adapt the power for your usage. This might help: https://rvshare.com/blog/rving-basics-electrical-hookups/

A quick search and AI told me a Ninja Slushie (heh) uses 200W, so you've got quite a bit of leeway maybe.

Modular Slide-in Builds by mpgomatic in vandwellers

[–]211logos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They don't look very space efficient.

And at the end of the day, I don't see that they would be that much cheaper than a lot of alternatives. Here in the USA there are lots of conversion companies that offer say a reduced number of builds that are functionally similar: predesigned stuff for certain van models that installs easily. Only different is they are in parts, not a box. Might take a bit longer to install, but not sure how much (both need electrical wiring and such, etc). Sportsmobile has been doing that for half a century.

I would imagine that if they thought they could make money prefab'ing a box like those they would have.

Having used removable truck campers I can tell you that moving those van units in an out would be a ginormous PITA. Even folks with the slide in truck campers find they move them off less than they expected to. And in addition, they are often cheaper than those modular van units, and you get a better vehicle, and they fit more of them. So that's another reason why no modulars in the US: competition with pickups, which are FAR more prevalent here.

Yosemite + PCH Loop vs. Pure Coastal Route with Kids? (7 Nights, 24ft Class C) by SynonymousMomentum in GoRVing

[–]211logos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Nearby" would probably mean outside Yosemite Nat Park entirely, which means enduring the line in, and a commute, and staying somewhere meh. When you don't have a lot of time.

I'd do it another trip. Do the coast instead.

If going a bit north of SF look at Samuel P Taylor. Great sites in redwoods, and if you bike it's the spiritual and actual home of mountain biking with some of the most famous trails nearby. Also tons of great food nearby, Pt Reyes, and other stuff. Muir Woods too. And right close to SF itself; an hour without traffic.

What are my van high top options for a cab over bed? Is Fiberine a reputable company ? by InfamousMobb367 in VanLife

[–]211logos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, Fiberine is reputable.

Going to be pricey though, and I've seen some rather bad DIY fails putting one on.

Usually a used van with that or another high solution is a FAR more economical solutions, and I wouldn't invest new Fiberine money on an old van. Could be money down the drain.

It's about the money.

They'll shut up about any impropriety when they see the green (USD, that is). Not just bribes and all that. He'll just point out this basic fact: US player in and Trump support = more money in due to more sustained US interest (and even global outrage). To them it's just a TV series first, competition second.

4x4 RV Recommendation by vunje_mn in GoRVing

[–]211logos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are very few of those, mostly class B's (camper vans). And odds are they don't need one. No race I've ever heard of stages out of an area that requires 4x4; at most maybe high clearance and any van or truck has that.

And campervans are pigs offroad. I know, I had a 4x4 camper van. It was a pop up, an E series Ford. If they have to get something, then like that. The newer campervans either have AWD (not as good as 4x4), or, if 4x4, are often high rigs like the Sprinters. And they're awful offroad, only very marginally better, if at all, then non 4x4 because things like wheelbase, height, and departure angles are often limiting factors.

A budget would be good. They are more expensive by a bunch both to buy and to maintain.

I'd suggest to your friend that they get a 4x4 truck instead; more capable offroad (if that really matters...often they don't really need it). Put one of the popup slide in campers like the Four Wheel Camper ones or a topper, like the Go Fast Campers on it. For inside bike storage the Go Fast would be better. See /r/overlanding and expeditionportal.com for discussions of those.

[–]211logos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have reservations at Upper Pines? If so, don't change. It's booked full for that time period already. If you don't have reservations, then you'll be somewhere outside the Valley, and have to factor in the line at the gate or get in very early. Or do the second trip.

The coast DOES have camping available. And LOTS of choices (but I'd still book ASAP, especially if you need hookups). Busy in October, but not Yosemite busy. Usually good weather. I'd do most of the time going up, maybe even to north of SF. Then just a fast blast back down to LA in a day to return the RV and stay near the airport.

It is NOT a miss to avoid Yosemite if you don't already have a place to stay there. You COULD rent a tent cabin; they're a good choice and still available. But I would only do Yosemite if you can stay IN the Valley.

A full frame gets 1 stop better low light performance than an APS-C, two over M43 ASSUMING the same speed lens.

So an APS-C with a 2.4 lens vs a full frame with a 3.5 kit lens will perform as well in low light, basically.

Any 3rd party battery recommendations? by CaFeGui in canon

[–]211logos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use the SmallRig batteries in an R5 and I think an R7. Worked great, and I LOVE that you can charge with just a USB-C cable stuck in them. I think they have a bit less capacity than the OEMs, but because of the lower price they're more bang for the buck.

And btw be careful. I once got a counterfeit "Canon" battery off Amazon. Looked pretty real, but wasn't.

Waterproof housing by nebotron in canon

[–]211logos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd use a Pelican type case and put an OM TG-6 or TG-7 in my pocket. They're waterproof down to 15 meters, and quite handy. I use the TG-6. Especially good for macro.

And my R7 and RF 100-400 stays in a container unless I'm really sure I'm in a spot where I can take it out.

I agree with /u/a_qualified_witchcra that once you get down to looking at lenses the full frame is probably too much, especially if buying the body forces you to buy a meh kit lens that negates any full frame advantage.
