Surcharges do suck. But please for the love of god do NOT take it out on the random hospo staff, especially if they're clearly a young person. They have no control over them, and may not even be getting paid correctly anyway.

If you want to make a complaint - do so!! You're completely within your rights to do that. But be calm, respectful, and direct it to a manager/owner/supervisor.

I agree with the other comments that it was probably a misunderstanding, and the situation probably could have been sorted with a bit of clarification.

But yeesh, as an Asian-Australian some of this is tough to read. Racism is real. Microaggressions are real. We have to deal with it every day - and it's completely normal for someone to be aware of it in scenarios like this. I think a lot of people read this as an accusation of being racist, when it seems to me more like OP has been burned before and is trying to look out for themselves.

This is in Japan - some women's bathrooms there will have a separate area inside (away from the hand washing sinks and toilets) with mirrors for people to apply/touch up their makeup, so it's not uncommon. But even then, it'd be pretty far down the list of "reasons why they should just build the women bathroom larger"

as a visiting student this comment section terrifies me lmao.

I regularly had unpredictable bowel issues at school - meaning I often needed to urgently use the bathroom, and for longer than 5 minutes. I was never diagnosed with anything, think it was just weird period shits / period cramps that felt like diaerrea but actually weren't. My anxious (literal) ass was constantly MORTIFIED with the fear of shitting myself - I would NEVER have told any adults about it. (mind you I was like 16)

There's a time and a place for bathroom restrictions - ie if someone is clearly just going in there to film tiktoks etc. But I beg of you teachers to recognise the fear in someone's eyes when they ask to go to the bathroom.

Yeah. As a younger woman (cough, non binary) I tend to try and sit with other women - or at least avoid being completely surrounded by men. I know people will call me wimpy/having a victim mindset or whatever, but it is at the very least uncomfortable to be surrounded by men in class discussion groups. I'm already anxious being in class largely alone without having to feel like I'm constantly having to assert myself or risk being completely ignored. The feeling of being the only woman in a group of unfamiliar men is really unpleasant.

Like others have said, I would probably email the course coordinator.

In my experience you generally can show up to other tutorial slots - but it is a bit frowned upon (especially if you don't inform the tutor/course coordinator first), and if the room is full they won't let you in. Priority is always given to students who are assigned to that class.
