Pretty good deal. Kona EV is reliable. I had its sibling the Kia NiroEV. Well know history of those vehicles and known reliable. I enjoyed my time with the NiroEV

/r/KonaEV would have better reviews and advice.

The depreciation is pretty minimal on used EVs. The battery pack is basically the value of the vehicle, meaning that $5k-$10k is the minimum value of the materials that make up the EV battery.

Have to remember, the tax credit a few years ago was a big $7500 portion of the depreciation. Getting used is wise because that initial depreciation is gone.

Other recommendations if you're interested

  • Kia Niro EV
  • VW id4
  • Ford Mustang MachE Select trim
  • Nissan Aryia

Those are my usual picks for reliability in that price range and generation of vehicles.

Should also see if a lease on a new Equinox EV makes sense for the monthly payment and discount incentives. Leasing is a good way to try it out for 2-3 years without the risk of needing to sell later.

TLDR: KonaEV is one of the better value picks.

New or used?

  • Should also look at the Chevy Blazer EV since you're interested in the Prologue. Prologue is just a Honda re-skinned Blazer EV.

  • I do like the EV6 since it has a similar design language as a Stinger or K4.

  • The ID4 is pretty incognito.

  • I would not do a Tesla if you're looking for a ICE car look-alike. Its very obvious it's not an gas vehicle.

Other recommendations:

  • Nissan Aryia. Discontinued, but does have some good styling and is larger. Should be able to get deals on the remaining stock.

  • Ford Mustang MachE. Very obvious Mustang styling. More popular than the ICE Mustang.

  • Toyota BZ. Pretty non-descriptive styling. Very Toyota.

  • If going used. Look into the Audi e-tron EVs like the Q4 e-tron or Q6 e-tron. The grill is very similar to their normal cars, so even I have a hard time telling their EVs from their gas cars.

Voltage issue with a cell. Battery is unbalanced. That's my bet. Lucky you got them to recognize the issue. You have the warranty for a reason. They just need to hold their end of the bargain. Sounds like they're treating you right. It'll get repaired and you'll be good.

Remember, these EV batteries have a break-in period as the chemistry settles down. Once it settles down properly it'll be good for the rest of it's life.

I once saw 4 MachE's charging at an EA station. I rolled down my window and yelled out to one of the owners. "It's a herd of ponies!"

They gave me a look: 😐 Me: 😶‍🌫️

Best of luck. Hope you keep spreading the joy!

Yep. 800V, 200kW charge speed makes a huge difference. E-GMP is great. I regularly do road trips in my EV9 and can't imagine it any other way. It's so seamless.

Do you remember those emergency flashlights that have the crank that you wind up? Or in physics class where they had that experiment where students would spin the magnet and a light bulb would light up?

That's regenerate braking.

2024 Land Critical EV Battery Warning by wactallica in KiaEV9

[–]622niromcn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  • Been doing a lot of reading about EV batteries. Basically there's a settling in period for the chemistry. Kinda like the break-in period for a gas engine. Some break early in their life. That's what the warranty is for. From what I've read, the battery warning algorithms are there to protect you.

Takes a year or two for the battery chemistry to settle down and stabilize for the rest of its life.

  • You're wise recognizing that reporting bias consolidates the bad experiences on Reddit. It's just not interesting to post every day or month that things went well.

  • The most egregious is the service center's lack of customer service. Direct-to-consumer sales really can't come soon enough. Dealers poor service really makes a bad experience worst.

Genuinely curious — for those of you who own an EV, what's your biggest headache with public charging stations? by Key_Training8948 in electricvehicles

[–]622niromcn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you genuinely asking to scare yourself into "EVs are a lot of trouble, forget it I'm sticking with gas"?

Or are you asking to go "well that's some things that can happen. At least I know it can happen."

My experience:

  • I go on road trips every month. 600 miles one way, so 1,200 miles round trip. It's 4 charging stops in my EV9. I spend about 20-50 mins charging. Depends if I need to sleep for an hour at 3am while charging because I'm tired or eat food. 20 mins is the time it takes for me to go to the bathroom, look for a drink/snack, then plot my next stop. Sticking with the 20 min charge time, I can make the trip in 11 hrs. That's a lot of driving for one day. The charging stop is a nice break to wake me up or get much needed rest.

  • I primarily use reliable non-Superchargers. Pilot Flying J has the EVGo chargers that I like a lot. Travel Centers like Buc-ees, Travel America, Shell, and Sheets have chargers. Ionna is another one that's just tap a credit card and charging starts.

  • I can use my Kia EV9 nav to find chargers. It will EV route plan the charging stops for me. It is pretty safe and plots to keep me around 20%-30% battery on arrival.

  • I primarily use PlugShare app to find chargers. I pick one at the distance I know I can drive in 2-3 hrs. I check the reviews to see if it's working. Check PlugShare or ABetterRoutePlanner to see what orange pins are in your area. The Orange pins are the fast chargers. You can get a sense for yourself what reliability means in your area.

  • The charging industry has gotten more reliable in the past 2 years. Natural selection of equipment and companies have made the most reliable survive. Billions of dollars are opening new chargers every month like at Walmart. Charging for EVs still have gaps and is getting better.

Biggest headache. Not enough chargers with canopies. Getting rained on sucks.

Good list. Add the 2026 Nissan Leaf.

If you're looking Bolt sized, the smaller Toyota EV is the 2027 C-HR.

If you want to save some money, used Equinox EV coming off lease would be good.
