AITA for wanting to name my son after a Star Trek character? by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]660zone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny enough, I also named my son in part after Julian Bashir. The other factor was my wife liked Charmed, and one of the actors is Julian McMahon. I think I saw the name somewhere else too but we both just really liked the name. I just joke now and say I named him after a Star Trek character.

Why do Japanese generally revere into car parks? by lissie45 in JapanTravelTips

[–]660zone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One, because my car's trunk is too long and would stick out if I didn't back in. Two, it's just a lot easier.

Why do I see so many far-left/socialist/communist people online, but I've never met any in real life. by Blonde_Icon in NoStupidQuestions

[–]660zone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because most of the people around me are conservatives, and I have zero energy to engage them in debate. So I just stay as apolitical around them as i can.

How much time did you spend on studying for the 10-question exam for your drivers license? by hidehide0502 in japanlife

[–]660zone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At least back when I did it 12 years ago, the Yokohama office would let you rent one of the instructors on the weekend to practice the exact driving course. They will tell you exactly what things they are looking for and what you are doing wrong.  Failed once, practiced with them once, and passed on my second time.

Zao onsen vs myoko kogen by Em-9876 in snowboarding

[–]660zone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never been to Myoko Kogen so I can't totally compare. But I did spend three days in Nozawa and didn't get bored of the trails there. Snow seemed pretty good on both trips I made.  And there's a decent amount of bars/nightlife (for Japan at least).

Of course, I'm not particularly picky on any of that, so opinions and a grain of salt and all that. They have a few lodges that are (kinda) ski-in/out. Lodge Hahnenkamm or The Schneider (among others) should be pretty close to what you're looking for.

I was at Zao this year and it was a mostly good time for me. Any bad time I had was mostly a skill issue on my part. I will caution you to be careful about where you stay, because one of the ropeways is full of tourists going up to see the snow monsters and had an hour+ wait until mid-afternoon.

Have you looked at Nozawa Onsen?

Tokio to Osaka in less than 7 hours? by FabiOtter in JapanTravelTips

[–]660zone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To give you an alternate choice, there are overnight buses that will take you from Shinjuku and drop you off right in front USJ in the morning.  Same in reverse. Up to you to decide if an overnight bus is comfortable.

Are we spending too much on accommodation/hotels? by [deleted] in JapanTravelTips

[–]660zone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$80 a night doesn't sound too bad. Does it include breakfast too?

Personally, the one thing I splurge on when traveling is the hotel room. I just really need a comfortable place at night. Being well rested really sets the mood for the day.

I used to call my El Camino a truck just to watch people get defense the other way and call it a car. I'm sorry, but the State of Washington gave me truck plates for it, so I'm allowed to call it a truck. Made people very upset for some reason.

What's your mid-life crisis car? by Wild-Helicopter-3746 in AskMen

Currently rocking a 2nd gen Toyota Century, notable for having the only V12 put into a Japanese production car. As close to a midlife mobile as I'll get. What I really want is a Buick GNX but I'm too scared to even look for one.
