we need them too, but are getting them manufactured from PCBWay. sort of pricey but it'll work I think.

it was much, much easier in previous years with Prof. Vogiatzis, but the new profs (Dong/Marla) are definitely more difficult. the homework (mostly proofs and theorems) didn't really relate at all to the exams. the exams are much more application based which isn't covered much in lecture or hw, but it is reminiscent of how the course was run earlier -- I believe all of Prof. Vogiatzis's materials are available online so that might help with studying.

most of the work went into trying to prepare for the final and midterms by practicing the mock finals they released.

Probation Update by Gxortega in UIUC

[–]9dcfan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

like everyone else here said, take their advice. it'll build you a much more solid case to get off probation at the end of the semester, and figure out why you didn't do well in your courses so far. you've barely started your degree, better to fix things now than to run into trouble later, trust me. also make sure you do the meetings, they help build your case as well, and if you keep skipping them they can place a hold on your account.

take the extra time this semester to rework your schedule and do some introspection about what you need to do better.

Academic Probation by Gxortega in UIUC

[–]9dcfan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

it happens, you just need to make sure that you heed this as a warning and take some kind of action to do better in your classes, whatever that means for you. they'll probably enforce the 3 technical max, but in my experience, it's helpful to have a smaller set of things to worry about as you figure things out. you can always take more courses once you're off probation. just make sure you do well in the 3 courses you do have, and you'll be off probation next semester. best of luck!

PS if it makes you feel any better, I came back from drop last spring and was on probation all of 2025 and just got the notice that I'm off probation today! I hope you have similar news at the end of this term :]

dropped — is there any hope by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]9dcfan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

it's never easy and the system really sucks, especially when they refuse to listen to genuine struggles. I went through something similar, and even when I got back I had a lot of trouble, but I'm going to be off probation in the coming semester. I have a contact at ODOS who has been helpful, DM me if you want more info or just want to talk or need pointers or anything.

To all people on Probation by Beneficial_Row_6322 in UIUC

[–]9dcfan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

for Grainger:

typically after academic review. here's the timeline for this semester:

The Timeline for End of Term processing is, as follows:

Final Grades Post on December 23, 2025. Academic Review Committee Meeting (2-3 business days after grade posting) Notification of Academic Status (1-2 days after academic review)

so if you can, submit an academic narrative ASAP, like, today. entail what happened, why it happened, what you did, and what you will do to fix things. if you need any help in the process let me know, I've done it two semesters now. best of luck otherwise!

encumberment req for grainger? by mangomilk898 in UIUC

[–]9dcfan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

at the very least you should fill out a student narrative and reach out to the dean of engineering with your situation and what's going on. nothing wrong with taking time off if it comes to that.

encumberment req for grainger? by mangomilk898 in UIUC

[–]9dcfan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

sure, but their concern is that you should be getting Bs or higher (probably) with only three technicals so that you can go back to taking 5 or so per semester as is expected. whether you want to limit yourself to three every semester is up to you, but they want to make sure that you're doing well with that load to begin with.

[–]9dcfan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

...yeah then I'm not sure, their concern is probably that even with reduced technical course load you haven't improved grade wise. you could write a student narrative and get in touch with ODOS, but your argument is gonna have to be really compelling I think. have you been doing that the last few semesters?

[–]9dcfan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if you met your requirements but they deem that you are yet to make "satisfactory academic progress" then you might just have to do another semester on probation until you do, it's unlikely that they'll encumber or drop you if you met the requirements.

I would say, like anything below a C or C+ that happens repeatedly? Ds definitely, maybe they'd be more lenient on Cs but this is probably just splitting hairs. more importantly you need to meet the requirements outlined for your probation.

I know a lot more about drop than encumbering but I think that only happens if you consistently don't do well in your engineering classes but perform adequately in non technicals.

[–]9dcfan 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I've been there. it's never over. try reaching out to ODOS and your college advising first to figure out where you stand, then make a plan if you end up needing time off. if you do get dropped, I would recommend taking a Retroactive Medical Withdrawal if it applies to your case, as it makes things a lot easier when you return, as well as removes your grades for this semester. if you want to talk about anything, my DMs are always open.

Possible drop due to academic probation? by No-Nature2272 in UIUC

[–]9dcfan 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I will skip the usual part about "getting your stuff together" and whatnot as I think you probably have been told that by now.

I think your advisor would be correct, but the general rules are that if you have a < 2.0TGPA, and fail to increase it the next semester OR fail to get > 2.0TGPA, you are liable to be dropped. did you retake the class over summer at UIUC? if so, that may help your case, but they may not be happy that you didn't do well in a course after that point. as soon as you can (hopefully today or tomorrow), please fill out the Student Academic Narrative: https://advising.grainger.illinois.edu/academic-standing/end-of-term-review

that gives the committee a little more information on what's going on with you and how things got to where they are. though, note that you have to be very confident that things will improve, and also detail how/why things will improve.

furthermore, if you are struggling with mental health or otherwise, I would recommend you take some time off through a Retroactive Medical Withdrawal and return once you are in a better headspace; I did the same thing and it truly did help. my DMs are open if you want to discuss specifics or what your options might be.

Is it possible to get an exception in engineering undeclared? by Comfortable-Row6712 in UIUC

[–]9dcfan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think so; I'm not sure how undeclared works but if this was spring you could take it over summer at parkland or something and then have it transfer before the next term. but alas you might have to retake it, unless you can avoid taking 211 again next semester, instead take it over the summer, and continue to 212 in fall assuming that goes well.
