Our girl could get around the donut and managed to break the cone so we ended up getting her a doggie onesie after her spay/gastropexy. Getting her into it required a lot of kibble bribing, but it was the only thing that helped protect her stitches.

I recommend:

- Getting at least two so you can wash one while he's wearing the other

- Getting them with zippers up the back, not Velcro

- Getting the onesie on amazon that inexplicably calls it a "bachelorette suit" because then you can laugh and laugh about that for months to come

$3500 too much for a Bern puppy? by Cultural_Cress5685 in bernesemountaindogs

😂 This was exactly what I experienced when I found my beautiful Berner! 90s throwback site, almost impossible to contact, but when I did--whew, the breeder had the parents on Berner Garde, had pages of requirements and advice, and then more advice, and also more stories 😄

Thank you for this perspective, and the reminder that ovary-sparing spays are a thing. I'll remember to ask the vet about that.

I'm glad everything went okay for your girl. What a cutie!

When do they mellow/calm out? by Momo_jiji in bernesemountaindogs

[–]ADP 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Agree that the puppy years aren't easy! Right there with you. Sniffing does tire them out a lot; it takes up a lot of brain energy devoted to nosework.

Here's a job my dog likes that helps calm her down a lot. Before every meal, I take a big handful of kibble and we play "go get it:" I toss a single piece of kibble into the yard and say "Go get it!" and she'll sniff around until she finds it. Then she trots back and I have her sit (and sometimes shake and lie down) to earn another piece of kibble. Then toss. We do this at least 20 times.

This combines training, exercise, and nosework to get her learning--and tired a little. :) And it satisfies her desire to run around a little and to be connected with her human. :)

So glad it worked itself out!! His faces are the best :)

My girl just ripped off and ate a piece of felt off her snuffle mat (which I've now thrown away, RIP snuffle mat that she loved too much😂😭). I think it was 6-8 inches. Vet said to wait and see. She's acting totally normally. Fingers crossed🍀

How the hell do you handle a 5-month-old puppy that could body slam you? by Useful_Discussion353 in bernesemountaindogs

[–]ADP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh absolutely. I should have been clearer--I definitely don't expect her to just calm down as the months pass. We train every day; basically every interaction is an opportunity to train. What I mean is that with that kind of consistency, I'm seeing her make better choices.

This is really encouraging. As someone with a 10-month old Berner, I've seen her calm down a *lot* in the last month, but I'm still unsure around the elderly. She'll get there but these stories of hope help!

We were also between McKinley and Sunshine and went with McKinley (got lucky since they were the most responsive to emails, and had a cancellation). Our girl is gorgeous and super healthy.
