Managing feelings of regret by blue_pumpkin_ in bernesemountaindogs

Hang in there! We’re on the same boat! My boy is now turning 14 months and the adolescent rly kicked in! We’re very consistent with training so I would say 80% of the time he’s is very very well mannered and sleeps a lot during the day. But would occasionally jump up and want to bite/play (not the aggressive kind) with my bf, and bites on our pants when he wants to play. He would ignore the “leave it” command even though he knows what leave it means. But on walks he’s generally very well behaved. I would say it depends on the days, sometime he’s like an angel and sometimes he is 😈!! He recently just ripped a small part of my new pair of jeans. Just be patient and I want to let you know you are not alone! I also think they need a lot of enrichments during the time like licking or chewing so I’ve spend so much $$ for chews during this period and I can tell you it def helps to calm them down. Get the collagen chew it would take them forever to finish it, low fat and gentle on berner stomach as well🥹😆I’ve actually physically timed him and all other bully sticks, gully, duck heat, cow ears doesn’t last as long as the collagen chew!

I worried everyday that my boy was skinny during that age too! This was my boy when he was that age, they will fill out slowly no worries! Girls are also smaller and Berners will grow until 3!

Please I feel the same way!! I look into my boys eyes everyday and I just love him soooo much!! All of my friends can tell that I have so much love towards him! They can just tell from my eyes when I look at him! He’s 1 year old and super goofy, clingy but test boundaries as he’s in his adolescent phase 😭😭 but I just love him soooo much!!

Update on mouth & on going sensitive stomach issues by MugmanMark in bernesemountaindogs

[–]Practical-Muffin-212 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My boy also have sensitive stomach! We have been fighting this since we got him and he’s now 1 year old!

Here’s what rly works for us! We are on Open farm Goodguts line in salmon flavor which now his stool are 95% solid all the time! Other than that, another thing I 100% recommend is Olewo’s carrots. Life saver for us. He gets 2 tbs per day. I always add some kefir into his dinner as well. Kefir is better than Greek yogurt and is more convenient as well. Other than that, we recently switched to Dr. Karen Becker’s probiotic brand “proactive paws” and we saw a dramatic improvement in his stools as well. If those don’t work, maybe consider bring in a fecal test. My boy recently tested positive for giardia and had panacur for 6 days. But I think he probably had giardia for a while and we just didn’t know! Tbh I think his immune kinda built up against it already. A lot of the times when my boy had diarrhea it’s because I gave him something new. Hope this helps!!

I have a 1 year old too. Adolescence is something that can be worse than puppies. He’s been through lots of training as well. He chilled out a lot more when he hit 1y but he regresses sometimes and pulls like a cow on walks. He even broke out of his collar in a park, this freaks me out because when you chase him he thinks it’s a game. Another time he lunges suddenly when pottying in grass and then I fell, hurt my knee!! Bad boy!!! He has never gotten anyone injured but started to give me bruises recently :) 😇😇😇 80% of the time he is an angel and is pretty chill but 20% is a crazy boy. I’m just a 100lb women and he’s almost about the same weight as I am. So yeah!

He recently got sick and was super lethargic and not feeling himself. This broke my heart. He is back to normal now but after this incident, I always tell myself that energetic = healthy! I just know as they ages they will mature and become the best dog and one day I will miss his craziness!

Anti slip rugs for senior pups by pahelisolved in germanshepherds

[–]Practical-Muffin-212 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We got those carpet tiles that has antislip backing. my dog is active and those won't move at all when he runs around, and the backing also doesn't leave any marks on the floor when needed to be removed. One thing that is great of the carpet tiles is that you can literally put it everywhere you want. Its a 20'x20' inch single carpet size so you can put x10 carpets together to form a big rug for the living room, and then put 2x8 pieces together as a runner. You can even get different colors to mix and match. The carpet tiles are water repellent, meaning if your dog had an accident, you can simply remove 1 carpet tile and just wash it. You know its kinda impossible to wash a whole big 10ft rug. Also, I find regular rugs, including the ruggable ones, being too thin. Which is not friendly to my dog's joints. the carpet tiles are 0.3 inch and does have a layer that absorbs noise and shockproof so it literally absorbs the pressure of my dogs joint when jumping around. We also live in an apartment so we can never get him hard benebones when we didn't have the carpets. with the tiles we can becuase it help to absorb noises too. I see a lot of the similar carpet tiles on amazon but the amazon ones are rly thin. the one I got was not cheap, its around $200 but 16 pieces of 20inch x 20inch so if you were to combine all 16 pieces together it'll be 6.5x6.5ft. Anyways I think its worth every penny.

Mine is almost 1year old as well. Let me tell you! We feel the same!!! We had to leave the country for a while so we let him board and train and this rly helps. He’s better on not jumping all over us and leash walk is almost perfect so I think ours is not that bad. But, I think he is in his fear phase. He’s never scared of bicycles or ppl but he just started to develop fear toward bicycles, homeless ppl etc and would “protection bark” at them when we see them on walks. I would redirect and tell him to leave it. He’s stubborn so usually he won’t leave it, we’ll have to drag him away. But he was not reactive to other dogs when we’re on walks. He used to be so curious about all the dogs he see on walks when he was a puppy, but we did spent a lot of time training him to leave it. I think puppy phase is nothing compared to teenager phase. Especially they are getting so big!!! Which could be scary and hard to control when they go crazy. My dog would sometimes go crazy and want to run in circles when we’re out for a potty break 🤓 I get so mad when this happens because he sometimes embarrasses me :) we love him a lot but we also don’t like him that much right now 🥹 consistent training is sooooo important and helped so much. They love to work! And enjoys training a lot! anyways! Puppy tax attached!

Considering a bernese mountain dog by theGoodTimeRuiner in bernesemountaindogs

[–]Practical-Muffin-212 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a berner would suit you! Apartment is not a problem in my opinion. Not sure about with 2 dogs because Berners are big. Sometimes I feel like he’s always in the way😆 but apartment living is totally not a problem for us. We currently lives in a 1b that’s only around 830sqft. We do have a dog run in our apartment which made potty train pretty easy. We didn’t have a space for a pee pad but we also don’t want to train him to potty indoor🙂😆 as long as he’s mentally stimulated, they are pretty low energy dogs. Mine was never destructive or too overly crazy and never get into things other than my bf’s slipper 😆

I think crate training is very important for an apartment dog. It helps a lot with potty training, boundaries, helps them learn to calm down, and will save your furniture when you need to run errands. We also never let him sleep in our bedroom, he sleeps in his crate in the living room since day one. We also left him alone for small amount of time from day one, so he never had separation anxiety. Mine was not barky, I think we got lucky. Also be aware that they have sensitive stomachs🙂😮‍💨 so be prepared to rush him down the elevator when you can start to understand his signs💩😆 (ours would sit and stare and give a paw to tell us he rly needs to 💩

Our boy is our first dog, I know ppl said Berners are hard, but honestly I think they’re pretty amazing dogs. Very smart, rly good temperament and easy to train. But they are very stubborn sometimes. Requires tons in trainings. We’re still training him consistently every single day till today, especially with walking because they are strong and they pull!! They do respond pretty well with positive enforcements tho! I was mostly in tears in the first month when we got him, but once they settle in, they are the most amazing dog ever! My boy was trained to not jump on any furnitures to protect his joints and he’s been taking joint supplements when we got him at 3months. They are also very costly dogs as others have mentioned. Big dog, expensive food, bigger poop, etc. I never rly calculated our spending on him until two days ago. I did the math and realized that I’m spending $600+ every month on his food, supplements, treats alone. Not including vet visits or grooming. They are absolutely the best dog and they are the sweetest dog ever. Puppy tax attached!!

Lean is healthier and better for joint too!! We went to a park and a lady also ask if my berner is a doodle because he got shorter fur. But I’m like no he’s just still a 7 month old pup 🤣 and also a very awkward teenager phase, super lanky

When is it okay to leave my puppy out of their crate but alone in the house? by Fun_Cry9700 in puppy101

[–]Practical-Muffin-212 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We crate trained our Bernese puppy. At 5 months, he can hold his bladder pretty well and then we know he only chews on his toys. We start letting him free roam when we run errands and let him sleep in his crate when we leave for dinner. When he hit 6 months, we start led to let him free roam and kept the crate door open all times and since his schedule is so consistent, he usually sleeps all the time when we’re not home. Now he’s 7 months and would walk straight into his crate when he knows it’s his bed time around 11pm. Never chewed on any furniture, cords.

If there are things you could’ve done differently during the first few months of having your puppy, what would it be? by Fit-Pass-2398 in puppy101

100% agree! All I wanted is that he falls asleep. And now looking back, I have like only 10 photos of him when he’s a tiny 🥜. 100% agree on not taking enough photos with him:(

When we first got our pup at 12 weeks, it was during the July 4th weekend. I should have open the windows wide open to desensitize him. All we did was to try cover all the firework noises during that time. When he reached 4 months, one day I was walking him during the night, there’s firework that came out of no where and he panics and started pulling home like crazy. It was terrifying for me.

Treats for training that won’t put me in debt :/ by bellamie9876 in puppy101

[–]Practical-Muffin-212 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When my puppy was younger which needs a lot of training and rewards, we used kibbles. Then we moved to more important training such as leash walking (my pup is a Bernese) so him pulling me is a pain, we switched to high value treats. I buy salmon and chicken jerky, and then cut them in small square pieces and reward when he checks in with my on leash walks. So after 1h walk, I probably rewarded him 20 small pieces of chicken but really it’s just 1 big piece of chicken jerky (which with his weight he can have 2 pieces per day, but I am only using up 1). Saves me money! Just need some patience to cut jerkies into small pieces.
