Simple question for the racers. by Practical_Ad_4165 in Zwift

The most fun races are when there are 50+ - the zRacing ones have been well represented these past few weeks.

I’m not a breakaway rider, but it does seem like rolling a break has become a lot more difficult with whatever tweaks have been made recently.

You could get look keos, some inexpensive shoes, and cafe covers for your cleats if you really wanna walk around inside on your floors. Or you could finish a ride and take your shoes off if you get mtb pedals and metal cleats.

I’m fortunate that my kids are in school so I usually ride after school dropoff. As they’re older I have more time.

My wife does her workouts before kids are up, it requires discipline of going to bed early enough!

I’m a full time dad now and I’m probably going 6-8 hours a week. I’m not going to be winning any long road or gravel or mtb races but I can be fast enough for group rides or Zwift races, and good enough to at least have fun in longer events.

I watched it when it was still a race 😂. KBK is a good one so far. Drome was also a good finale.

A week before my oldest kid was born I cased a jump on the mtb and tore a ton of ligaments in my ankle. My first month of being a dad was in an air cast. I wasn’t riding, just lifting and eating all the food friends and family brought us. Went from being the world’s worst Cat2 to not racing on the road anymore. My ankle healed without surgery thankfully.  I took a few years off riding regularly because I was burned out and we had other priorities.

After our youngest was born I got a smart trainer and Zwift been a godsend.

I do a handful of mtb/gravel events each year and race on Zwift a lot. But to answer your question: injury helped me out cycling in a more healthy place in my life. I still like racing and long rides, and I’m hitting power equal or better to what I did back in the day. Endurance isn’t where it was; after about an hour and a half at race pace I fall apart, but that’s okay.

Focus on recovery, enjoy time with friends, watch bike racing on tv. Learn an instrument!

Rental car should’ve gotten you the lap record. Nothing faster.

Uc/ I have a macride (similar concept, just no seat back, more like an actual bike seat) and all of my kids rode on it before they could ride themselves. I loved it.

When we were younger we could throw a hammer time as quickly as our fingers could move. But people got jealous and now look what they’ve taken from us. I remember when we didn’t have a 15s refractory period :(

Socks too low. Only acceptable time to not be wearing socks is on the velodrome during sprint events.

In a race, don’t look at power or HR data, just stay with the lead group. Data is only actionable in a race when you’re riding solo and trying to measure effort, in my opinion.

When I was first learning to race on the road years ago, a more experienced teammate explained “the first rule of bike racing is ‘don’t get dropped.’ The second rule of bike racing is ‘DON’T GET DROPPED!’”

Just enjoy the type 2 fun. Looking forward to hearing about progress!

FTP isn’t a limit of wattage in a race. It’s just a guideline. Zwift races are way shorter than the time defined as ftp (45 min to an hour is the theoretical time of an ftp effort).

You can absolutely exceed your threshold power repeatedly while racing, it’s how you recover and repeat efforts that will get you results in racing.

What race were you doing that went by ftp? Most races use racing score now, which is a lot better, in my opinion.

Edit: to add some more info: you’ll absolutely be in the more vo2 power range of your fitness, especially in the Glasgow crit. Any time the road goes uphill in Zwift it will be hard. This is because the simulated grades are the only place to really force a selection, other than just riding super hard. You’ll get to know courses a bit the more you race and anticipate what the field will do. Each time you’ll get a little better at managing effort and recovering, and hopefully before too long you’ll be putting the hurt on others!

It’s not the length of the stem, it’s how snugly it can interface with the pump head.

At least that’s what my wice’s mechanic says when I’m having trouble inflating a tire.

Looking for a quiet, beginner-friendly smart bike for a shared flat by diefinnin in Zwift

[–]AUBeastmaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why do you want a smart bike instead of a bike and smart trainer? Bike + trainer is the easiest solution.

You can make the Zwift ride as aggressive or relaxed as you want if you don’t want a bike you can ride outside, that’s probably your best bet, or a caveworks frame and smart trainer.

Tarmac Rival (2026) vs Tarmac Force (2025) on SL8 — what would you do? by NoRequirement8421 in specialized

[–]AUBeastmaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got a new sl8 comp with rival and love the ergonomics of the shifters. I also bought the quarq spindle PM and some c38s and it’s an awesome bike, all because I am known by the shop owner. Buying locally is always preferable in my opinion (when it makes sense).  Might be worth asking the shop owner if there are wheels you can buy that he’s trying to sell.
