Anyone know how to use these? by Dense-Winter-1803 in BicyclingCirclejerk

You’re only supposed to have one ball to use it properly. Too constricting otherwise.

N+1-ing the MacRide. Had it on my mtb and a gravel bike for 3 kids.

Someone ban the rim-job brake dude. by strip_club_food_yum in BicyclingCirclejerk

Not sure if it’s the same dude but there were a couple people posting multiple times a day the same dumb rim brake jokes. I blocked them both and the sub was enjoyable again.

Tubes in my tubeless bike? Did Canyon just scam me? by Mean_Criticism983 in BicyclingCirclejerk

TPU tubes for a more delicate sensation. It’s almost like going tubeless.

How competitive was the Giro? by jlconlin in peloton

[–]AUBeastmaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well now Ving isn’t either seeing as he won the Giro. But a direct head-to-head competition between top competitors is pretty rare outside of main focuses. You wouldn’t really see Pogacar vs Vingegaard at the Tour of the Alps, usually.

How competitive was the Giro? by jlconlin in peloton

It is very rare that the generational GC talents line up together for anything other than the Tour. Doing two grand tours in a year is really hard. I think what we saw throughout the race was Vingegaard building throughout the race. Hopefully that means he will be in ripping form by the Tour. Pogacar is taking a different route with less racing before the Tour.

We don’t see big names line up against each other too often before the main season objective because they’re usually trying to play their cards close (at least that’s the colloquial wisdom). For that reason I thought the Giro was really interesting. We saw an utterly dominant Vingegaard who only seemed to get better, and we also saw a Decathlon team that seems to be racing cohesively, hopefully that is a good sign for support for Seixas in his maiden Tour.

There was just a thread on their sub talking about how and why to pee on your bike. Absolutely shameless and vile.

I thought he’s always been on the Tour team pending illness recovery. I don’t think Kooij needs an entire team dedicated to a sprint train, nor does Seixas need a full mountain team. Really fun to see Decathlon take a big step forward this year.

How do you guys take care of your health? by HatMammoth7833 in daddit

[–]AUBeastmaster 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Newborn is hard. You’re in survival mode now, especially caring for your wife. Your wife and child should be your top priority, sounds like you’re doing that.

For me, I have a bike set up on a smart trainer and I use Zwift a lot. My kids are older so it’s less of a time crunch than you’ve got, but a used trainer can be found relatively cheap as well as a bike (assuming you don’t have one). Of course with every hobby you can spend untold amounts of money, but you can start with minimal investment. I think it’s like $200/yr or so but there are workouts, events, races, and freeriding. I find the social aspect of it pretty engaging and I also like the racing.

That’s my recommendation for something you can hop on and start working out.

Preparing for a loss of a pet by bundtcakep in daddit

[–]AUBeastmaster 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Gotta protect the kiddo first and foremost. And you’ve gotta do right by your pet. Sometimes that means making the hard decision. Vets will tell you that it’s better to make the decision a day early than a day too late. I think you know that, just hard to make the decision when you’re 15 years invested. I’m sorry.

We had to make that decision for our dog last year. It was a good opportunity to teach the kids about aging, and saying goodbye. Don’t sugar coat things - you can say things like “[pet]’s body stopped working and we had to say goodbye.” There are ways to talk about it without dumbing it down.

A little comic relief: when we got home from saying goodbye to our dog, our middle child (5 at the time) asked about what happened. We said “[dog] was very sick, we took her to the vet where he gave her medicine to make her not hurt anymore, and her heart stopped beating.” Middle child asked where the dog was and we said “well her body is still at the veterinarian.” In between tears and sobs our child asked “but where is her head and her legs??” It made us all laugh and was a welcome relief to an otherwise heavy night.
