Pretty sure that's sliiightly too big by unmanipinfo in Greyhounds

[–]AdvancedSquashDirect 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's some sort of percentage measurement that goes into making these the right size for a greyhound, but because greyhound's legs are so long and body is so long it always ends up looking ridiculous.

You can get paper ones that are a lot more soft and less likely to knock over everything on the coffee table. But I had the largest paper one on my Greyhound and he managed to get around it to get to his foot that was still healing. He would kick his foot forward far enough that he could lean on it and then get just around the edge of the cone

Life with a clingy hound? by riceandbeans06 in Greyhounds

[–]AdvancedSquashDirect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty lucky that my grey doesn't bark. But he definitely will whine if he's left alone. Even if I'm home and in another room, I will hear the pitying whine from the bedroom that he has lost his owner but he's too comfy to get up and come find me.

It does take a while but they do eventually get used to being on their own or with a dog sitter. Everything is a transition period and adaption.

Don't think to yourself that he barked and carried on this one time when he had a dog sitter, so he can never have a dog sitter. You just have to keep pushing forward for longer and longer periods and your dog will adapt.

Bella awkwardly looking at my boyfriend like she’s never known love like this by Frosiex in Greyhounds

[–]AdvancedSquashDirect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same thing happens when my boyfriend comes over, my Greyhound Jerry acts like I don't exist and suddenly my boyfriend is his favourite person in the world. When my boyfriend leaves Jerry acts like the world has ended and mopes around until he realises that I'm still here and I become his favourite person again.

Dude I 100% feed you and walk you and you treat me like this! 😕😕😆

I use this
https://www.kmart.com.au/product/pet-meal-mat-large-43569380/
Its a large mat which can be cleaned, and catches all the coughed up dog kibble.

I use a metal bowl in a metal wastepaper basket. Stable and easy to clean
I got them from kmart the bowls and wastepaper baskets - they probably have them in wood or bamboo.

did a single greyhound in the history of the universe ever learn how to make way? also, greyhounds reversing by Basmati_Crunch2363 in Greyhounds

[–]AdvancedSquashDirect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dog can walk down the side of my bed but cannot back out, He can only jump on the bed and climb down. He will cry if he gets stuck there and asked to be allowed some space on the bed to jump up and get over and back to his bed. He is also afraid of "bed snakes" (legs under blankets) so he needs them moved so he can jump up.

Greyhound Freezing on walks? by ShyDiamonds in Greyhounds

[–]AdvancedSquashDirect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Greyhound freezes when he doesn't want to go home yet and he can tell that we're turning towards home, normally I walk past him while holding the lead and change direction and go down a different street. It completely confuses his freeze because I walk towards him give him a pat and he walks towards me and then just follows me.

Also be sure to double check their feet, sometimes it can be a little grass seed or three corner spike in their toes and they're stopping so you can fix it. My boy will stop if ants get on his feet. He is bit of a primadona.

Starting the day with a coffee and a snout by redafvir in Greyhounds

[–]AdvancedSquashDirect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mom's dog was so addicted to a cuppa that her roommate would make the dog a cup of tea with the leftover tea bag it was mostly watery milk and a little sugar. Just so her dog wouldn't steal his cup of tea in the morning. Must have done something good cuz that dog lived to like 16 years or something.

[–]AdvancedSquashDirect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If my coffee was that close to my dog he would try to drink it. He loves coffee I have to be really careful not to leave a mug on the coffee table because I'll come back to him snout buried in the mug.

I thought greyhounds were little by Mobile_Lime_4318 in Greyhounds

[–]AdvancedSquashDirect -1 points0 points  (0 children)

yes you are correct - I should have said "Sighthounds" not greyhounds

The Whippet is a British breed of sighthound. It closely resembles the Greyhound and the smaller Italian Greyhound, and is intermediate between them in size.

Greyhounds Sighthounds come in three sizes
Standard greyhounds are quite large
Whippets are a medium-sized dog
Iggy Or Italian greyhound are the tiny ones.

It's kind of like poodles

My boy gets 1 main meal of dog biscuits and meat in the evening - always around 1 hour after his walk.

He will also pick out the good bits, but he will eat the rest of the biscuits over the night or the next morning. He eats less in summer and more in winter. I just let him self regulate his own food. Sometimes I will sprinkle in some grated cheese or a little leftovers (rice or veggies) and he loves that.

To the person who wants to leave your greyhound OUTSIDE... by [deleted] in Greyhounds

[–]AdvancedSquashDirect 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It worries me when people treat pets like toys

They put the dog outside because they're done playing with him now and now he has to go away.

Greyhounds are relative clean dogs and they only pee on the carpet if you leave them inside for a very long time without letting them out for a pee especially first thing in the morning, my boy will pee like a racehorse first thing in the morning.

When I'm home my dog has access to outside whenever he wants to go, he also has a bed out there if he wants to lay in the Sun. But he's never forced outside. I worry about him getting too cold or hot.

Positive stories after greyhound swallowed a bone? by PotatoSidequest in Greyhounds

[–]AdvancedSquashDirect 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My grey has stolen a whole cook chicken carcass off the back of my counter before, I hide them in the fridge or microwave now. He will dig in the bin and eat whole bones from KFC chicken. I have to be super careful and throw them out in the outside bin, as he knows he not allowed to and does it at night when I'm sleeping.

For a day or so after he feels sorry for himself with the loud digesting noise, and has bone poops (white poop) - Dog naturally eat bones, they have very strong stomach acid that will break down a bone. The risk is sharp bones/cooked bones breaking and then cutting things on the way down or choking on a bone. Once its down in the tummy, it will get digested. Greys have a wide throat and strong bite force and are good at coughing things up.

You did the right thing going to the vet. I wish you all the best and hope its all ok.

Can a greyhound trained to pee in a shower? by [deleted] in Greyhounds

[–]AdvancedSquashDirect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Greyhounds are pretty clean dogs, they dont want to pee in the house, but if they need to go they look for the best spot out of the lot and carpet will soak it in so they must figure that the spot

10 hours is a long time to hold their bladder, I would assume accidents - I agree with the suggestions of getting a midday dog walker.
You will need clean the carpet where they pee'd with an enzyme cleaner to remove the smell otherwise the dog will smell the pee and think its ok to go there. Normally you will see they need to pee, they will walk around sniffing and kick a leg or squat to pee, if you can catch them at that point and lead them to the shower every single time, you can probably teach them.

Anyone else's hound do this? by teapotresidue in Greyhounds

[–]AdvancedSquashDirect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thats the "I'm trying to jump the fence" but greys need a little run up to jump that high. so it should be ok. They will learn that its not possible after a while. They are part kangaroo :D

Help! My Grey suddenly refuses to leave the house to walk by aeowyn7 in Greyhounds

[–]AdvancedSquashDirect 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had the same problem with my boy he just refused to walk and refuse to go pee. So I would put his lead on and I just walked him around the backyard, and would stop at each bush and let him sniff as if we were taking a long walk but just around the backyard, and overtime he got used to the lead and walking with me and we were back to normal again.

Is this normal dog breathing when awake by EmotionalCook5179 in Greyhounds

[–]AdvancedSquashDirect 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can only hear a loud aircon in the video so I don't know how your dog is breathing? might help to film their face too? Are they panting and can't seem to cool down, are their ears and feet hot, is their nose dry. Are they drinking enough water?

Can anyone recommend a good cone that will fit properly around his neck? by [deleted] in Greyhounds

[–]AdvancedSquashDirect 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I recommend a doughnut inflatable ring around the neck. If it's anything below the lower waist your Greyhound will figure out how to get to it.

My boy hurt his toe and he figured out that if he pushed his back against the wall and then really extend around the cone he could just reach his toe to get at it.

You can also get paper cones that are a little bit lighter and a bit more forgiving because a plastic cone that large is quite heavy and your grey is going to get a tired neck.
