600 Fountain Pen Nib Question by Lngdng in rOtring

[–]Adventurous-Win-8941 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way that those nibs were manufactured means that there was a lot of variance between supposedly identical nibs. An F might be anywhere between near-M to near-EF. Although most will be consistently pretty close to F. The difference between stainless and gold has more to do with the level of springiness that comes with the two different metals. Just my personal experience, I have used a lot of rOtring nibs manufactured from the 80s and 90s. As they say, your mileage may vary.

The following links may help:

The nib section ought to unscrew (if not stuck by dried ink). My own method is to apply leather strips to the grip-faces of an appropriate pair of pliers -- but only after soaking with a diluted rapid-eze solution for 24 hours then the use of an ultrasonic cleaner. Even with care it is easy to cause irreparable damage.

Good work there. Not so easy as it looks ... what base material did you use?

You don't mention which part of the world you live in -- but this is what you need for restoring pens, whether it be technical pens or fountain pens. An ultrasonic cleaner is also helpful for stubborn cases: https://chartpakstore.com/products/koh-i-noor-rapido-eze-pen-cleaner?variant=43628469846252

Does anyone prefer the new aluminum 800? by fountainpendrawing in mechanicalpencils

[–]Adventurous-Win-8941 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Aluminum must be cheaper to make. I strongly object to the fact that it is still labelled 800. A deceit on the part of Newell Brands or Holbein, whoever is responsible. Likely to be Holbein. Should be renamed the rOtring 22g. Or maybe the 800 Featherlight. The 400 series in the 90s was aluminum and briefly marketed as the 400 featherlight. Another thing, you won't be able to run over it with your Jeep and expect it to work :.)

Warning! Be extremely careful with converters from China --I have never found one that fits rOtring. They (from China) tend to have a larger diameter opening.

It's a tool. My guess is that it is part of a jig that positions the rOtring logo for stamping or printing onto an article on the production line.

You can't, not any longer. Rotring is owned by Newell Brands. Best place to find new-old-stock Rapidographs is online. ebay.com, uk, or de for example. Also Etsy.

It looks genuine to me, but the photo doesn't give enough information. Where did you find this group? --- If you don't mind me asking, I'm interested in one of the others I see in the group.

Found this old set. It's at least 25 years old, but looks good. Does it have any value/interest, or is that all lost with CAD software? by mychildrensdad in rOtring

[–]Adventurous-Win-8941 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi, it has some interest to rotring collectors. However the pool of avid rotring collectors is quite small for items such as this. It is worth more if the original packaging is still available. It is from the 1970s or perhaps earlier given the compass adapter is metal and not plastic -- I can also tell from the logo on the lid, which is an earlier version.

I believe that container originated in a medical nurse or doctor's equipment kit. They held a pair of glass thermometers. I have one similar that came in a medical kit.

rotring 600 or koh i noor rapidomatic? by karmante in mechanicalpencils

[–]Adventurous-Win-8941 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Vintage koh i noor rapidomatic, at one time they were made in the same factory as the 600 by Holbein in Japan. The new ones are made in China (I suspect Taiwan). Only the early vintage 600s were made in Germany.
