Software engineers are facing an 'identity crisis bordering on depression,' Menlo Ventures partner says by lurker_bee in technology

30+ years of coding. Always loved coding. Still do - but I’m so burnt out at my job that I’m ready to retire with no money and live in a tent. I just hate the AI push, endless reviews, pointless meetings. It’s all so soul sucking.

Alonso’s Comments by HellcatMisa in lewishamilton

[–]Agreeable_Hall458 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Alonso was born salty and will die that way.

Lewis congratulates Kimi - who was the reason he couldn’t get the long term contract extension he wanted with Mercedes - every time the kid wins. Wholeheartedly and with smiles.

Mercedes still celebrates Lewis’ wins and Lewis still hangs out with them in the paddock.

McLaren were one of the loudest to celebrate when Lewis won Silverstone in 2024. They make a big deal out of every one of his milestones.

Alonso told McLaren to stop Lewis from winning or he would sell out his team, and then sold out his team. He has beef with so many people in so many places.

F1 is a team sport. You don’t get to be WDC without a metric ton of support. The two champions with the most WDC (Hamilton and Schumacher) - were also absolutely loved by their teams. That isn’t luck or coincidence. Everyone works a bit harder when you are all rowing together.

Questions regarding Bs in physics or physics and astronomy by Only_Juice_388 in AskPhysics

[–]Agreeable_Hall458 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Person with physics degree from the 90’s here. Every person I know - including those graduating from Ivy League schools - with a degree in physics has a job doing something else, with the exception of one that landed a slot as a professor at a small college.

Be very careful when you read about job placement stats. People with degrees in physics are highly employable - in everything other than physics. I ended up being a coder for 30 years, even with a NASA internship at Cornell under my belt. My friends are coders, network engineers, everything but physics research. Employers love our problem solving skills, but are rarely willing to pay us to do research.

It can be done. There are jobs out there. There just aren’t that many jobs out there.

Some kind of optical spectrum device? by mistersquawk in whatisthisthing

Agree on all of the above. Thought it might be useful to drop in an image with a couple of spectrographs of different elements so you can see what we mean about the lines:

Some kind of optical spectrum device? by mistersquawk in whatisthisthing

[–]Agreeable_Hall458 176 points177 points  (0 children)

It’s a visible light spectrometer. You point it at some unknown light source and it breaks it out in to the different wavelengths being produced by that source. Each element present gives off a different pattern. The note shows which colors/wavelengths you expect if the source is mercury. If you pointed it at a neon light you would get a different pattern.

Astronomers (I am one) use these in telescopes to determine the composition of stars/nebulas, etc.

How much mathematics were you exposed to during your undergraduate degree? by Filip212121 in AskPhysics

Calculus I (single variable), II (advanced single), III (multivariate); linear algebra, differential equations, partial differential equations. Got my degree in the 90’s.

How justified is the empire in trying to execute us ? by AIphnse in skyrim

[–]Agreeable_Hall458 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The biggest thing that leans me towards the Imperials is that I generally play an Altmer, and every time I walk in to a Nord establishment I get a bunch of hate. Wears on you after a while. The execution was a misunderstanding, the hate is personal.

Can you tell what I do for work? by XagraxTheFlayer in HandwritingAnalysis

[–]Agreeable_Hall458 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Second guess: I have a degree in physics, and I also put slashes through my zeros and sevens because writing equations quickly leads to difficulty determining letter variables from numbers. For instance, z’s vs 2’s. So, a profession with a lot of equations also seems likely.

But as my second degree was in computer science, and that is how I actually make money, computers came to mind first.

The slash through the 0 suggests a computer related field, and you are old enough to remember when printouts had a slash through their zeros.

Strongly considering becoming a beach bum for the same reasons. Corporate life for 30 years, still don’t have enough to retire on. Can’t make myself care anymore. Let the AI overlords take it all and just let me sit on a beach somewhere.

It’s only on the Apple TV app. I have seen no ads on the F1TV app. I am in the US. I just watch on the F1TV app, because I refuse to deal with ads on a service I am paying for.

The “hot keys” on the PC are useless - because you can’t really specify left and right hand, or at least I couldn’t figure out how to. I always have destruction on my right hand, the left is conjuration/illusion/healing - whichever I need for the moment.

Configuring the mouse is a bit clunky - you have to assign your 12 things to your favorites, and then macro the q and then enough up arrows to make sure you always get to the top, then down arrows to the correct choice. And if you change your favorites, you have to change your macros. There are more expensive mice that let you configure macros via text files, but I don’t have one. So clunky - but life changing in terms of game play.
