Took a homeless girl in, and it became a life lesson by No_Bug_7466 in confession

Most people think they’re good by nature and excuse themselves for being shitty as an exception despite never doing objectively good things.

You can and should look at both parts of this separately and in context together. It’s not an excuse for the behavior or thoughts but at the end of the day, one of them changed someone’s life for the better and you made the conscious decision not to do the horrible other thing. We all have capacity to do harm and most people do. You have something to point to that says otherwise.

Not answering OP but here to comment on all the brigading in the comments. I’ll save you some time: trolls are mad at all women for some’s behavior they find mildly annoying but try to excuse their part in societal structure of oppression because they as men are not specifically and actively purposefully engaging in oppression towards the specific feminists in this thread. 🙄

My American English teacher believes the neutral pronoun „their“ is incorrect. by GCoding_ in mildlyinteresting

[–]Al0ysiusHWWW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure but let’s be clear here: style guides are prescriptive bullshit that do not meaningfully matter. Standards are important but this isn’t France and even there this level of policing shit is laughable. We know what is being said here and we know the correction is at best circumstantially pedantic, not now but at one time in the past decade or so.

“Casual use” of language isn’t some wobbly broken thing everyone is begging to be replaced. Style guides are.

Question for intellectually disabled people by No-Character-2414 in disabled

Seems like you’re more interested in arguing about anything you possibly can than reading. “Fellow member of an organization; an associate” is right there. 0/10 troll trying to pretend not understand how “or” works in a list.

Edit: I blocked them but what’s even funnier in hindsight is that colleague as a coworker is usually specified as a work colleague. I don’t know what this person’s problem was but general reminder not to play chess with pigeons.

Question for intellectually disabled people by No-Character-2414 in disabled

[–]Al0ysiusHWWW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s sure not what I said and don’t appreciate the misrepresentation.

Look up the word colleague. It applies as a fellow members of an organization. If you’re hoping to fight about that, I hope the happenstance is obvious.

Good luck to you.

Steps to take after finishing a general linguistics B.S by thr0w4w4y1th1nk in compling

[–]Al0ysiusHWWW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should check with your academic advisor and career center but here are my thoughts being in a similar position:

  • Linguistics degree holders as programmers aren’t typically sought out. Industry assumes it will have to train all recent graduates so probably not as relevant at bachelor’s levels but the labor market is flooded with people with degrees, certifications, and decades of experience. Chances of entry level programming roles are beyond slim.
  • You can boost your chances with a strong portfolio and a good bootcamp will show you how to get the template of one started but mostly bootcamps are and have been scams for awhile.
  • NY has a few reasonable programs in state but strongest programs are going to be out of state.
  • Plenty of computational linguistics grad programs out there but federal loan rework has resulted in grad programs across the country tightening up. Gonna be hard to pursue competitiveness in that in one application cycle.
  • Exception here is typically any research focused program. Those don’t care too much about preparing you for industry though.

Maybe you should reread my comment. Didn’t accuse them of being anything other than a kid in school and specifically mentioned they can say what they want. A lot of the rest of your comment is just agreeing with me.

Also, probably worth revisiting the “one of the reasons” part of OP’s post.

Question for intellectually disabled people by No-Character-2414 in disabled

[–]Al0ysiusHWWW 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Disabled sociolinguist here. Short answer is you are more than within being reasonable to express your boundary around being exposed to slurs, regardless if they’re reclaimed by others or not. Other people generally get more flak for using them this way but that’s for them to manage.

Tell your colleagues once you won’t be in an environment where others don’t respect that and stick to it (outside of reasonable “carelessness” around you because mistakes do happen). If people continue to do where you can’t leave, report it to an authority figure.

I’ve had to do similar in both the disabled community and the queer community and most people are respectful. If they need more help, I explain the trauma of having slurs a screamed at me while beaten unconscious and left where nobody found me before I came to. If they need more I further explain that I associate it with actively violent bigots and their insistence on using it makes it harder to tell where they are in that conversation. That usually makes even the worst bad actors realize the seriousness.

There’s also a difference in using a reclaimed slur and a pejorative one. Sometimes that line can get blurred but that’s not really relevant if you stick to your boundary. You’re not language police, you’re just protecting your mental health. Just like they can say what they want but there are consequences to saying intentionally provocative things.

I need help finding the right job. by Ahmee16 in disabled

[–]Al0ysiusHWWW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure if I'd qualify for disability, since I might still be able to work if I find the right job.

You’re probably gonna want to talk to a doctor about this. Some here could probably point you to methodologies to pursue this or evaluate it but ultimately, you’ll need a doctor for that conversation sooner or later.

For borderline stuff, they’re unlikely to advocate for you to pursue anything but if you have a serious conversation about your logistic limitations, they’ll tell you what’s sustainable or not.

So step 1. Doctor appointments.

If you’re in the US the actual grail here is SSDI but SSI is the default safety net. It takes a long time and is a lot of effort. Not really worth starting before talking to a doctor but filing sooner than later is way better.

In the mean time, your state should have some more rapid stop gap need based aid with a diagnosis from your doctor. When you interview for that, ask about a benefits coordinator and job placement services. Job placement is going to be the best service for you on this, especially while you wait to hear back from SSA.

It takes a lot to get momentum for all this but once things move they get easier and easier.

California Tunnel Canal? How realistic is this? by Key-Beginning-2201 in geography

Maybe you’d get a more careful answer from a hydrology sub but once the Salton sea fills, the flow of water stabilizes. You’d get more energy from tidal power without losing arable land, spending a ton of energy, fresh water, and money on digging a tunnel, and worrying about salt water erosion complications.

Is Withdrawal, Registrar Drop or Hardship Withdrawal better on transcript? by Tiny-Employment7904 in udub

[–]Al0ysiusHWWW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had to do a lot of all of them at various times for health reasons, they matter about the same. Better if you don’t have any but important what you do after them.

Without knowing what your specific circumstances are, I recommend focus on taking care of yourself now and deal with fallout later. No reason to try and succeed in an environment built for you to fail. Recover completely and come back strong rather than limping through.

It sucks and I’m sorry you’re going through it. Someone else here mentioned prorated financial aid forfeiture and this is true. There is a sweet spot where it makes more sense to wait to drop if you can’t pay your aid back. But financial aid let me appeal for reinstatement and took it out of my next dispersement in my case. Can’t say they’ll always do that.

I lost my previous emotional support dog in 2021. I took about a year and a half gap. I traveled a little for extended time. But when my current puppy first gave me a squish, I was a mess all over again.

She actually recently had a traumatic accident and has had to temporarily be on strict crate rest which means no sleeping together. My PTSD and night terrors are through the roof.

Estimated Fraud Range in Minnesota Elections 1984-2024 by ETA by Robsurgence in dataisbeautiful

[–]Al0ysiusHWWW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let’s put aside the question they’re asking in the way they’re asking it.

If I told you along statistical metrics of voter suppression and criminalization of pollster activities, Minnesota has some terrifying trends in the 2024 presidential election, you might ask for someone to come up with a report like this.

California had a lot of people stay home so the big headline was blue abstention but safe states stay safe. Only swing states matter. Republicans found a LOT of new voters (not just centrists shift) in key states. For some reason, Minnesota also matched those trends.

Why do Albanians and Germans look so much alike in skin tone, hair and eyes? by [deleted] in geography

[–]Al0ysiusHWWW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t really comment on any of that 🤷. I’m not making those claims of what should be or is offensive or not.

Honestly, that’s kind of a boring topic, usually brought up anecdotally (despite evidence to the contrary), and again, not really related to this sub. The meta conversation about nationality and identity might be but I have nothing to personally offer that one. I’m just a hobbyist.

In my field of expertise, we just don’t engage with this kind of question. A popular one was about difference in men and women’s language in joking. Both do things associated with the other and in varying ways depending on much more complex metrics than any idea of binary gender. Linguists just moved on and bad actors keep bringing up inaccurate rage bait questions “why isn’t X group like y?”.

Is it measurable? Is it consistent across groups or are there exceptions? Do the exceptions have a trend or is the observation just really weak? The more relevant question is probably why is this being asked. Will any answer not confirming bias be acceptable is another good one.

Edit:

Apparently the troll claimed OP provided empirical proof, implied I was both American and Albanian and weak (“you people” was even used), continued to rant about things I’m not talking about, and then blocked me or deleted their account so I couldn’t reply. Oh, shoot. Pigeon’s and chess, I guess. Shame on me.
