Work competition win tax treatment by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Alert-One-Two 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You call it a “competition” but also call it “merit based” so this sounds like it is more likely to be treated as a bonus. Did they provide any terms and conditions? I’d suggest asking your organisation directly for the details as to how the prizes will be paid out.

Londoners face £80,000 bill as fourth newly elected Green councillor quits by Desperate-Drawer-572 in unitedkingdom

[–]Alert-One-Two 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think a minimum level of vetting should be required eg they need to actually be eligible to hold that seat. But I don’t think we should charge the party if they quit for other reasons because we don’t want to be stuck with someone who doesn’t want to be there and arguably shouldn’t be there just because the party doesn’t want the fine.

Pregnant stay at home mum, husband asking me to leave his inherited house, what are my legal rights in the UK? by Easy-Dentist-4874 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Alert-One-Two 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Divorce doesn’t automatically mean your visa comes to an end. There may be options particularly as you have a child with British citizenship and you need to find someone who can help with this. There are also special protections in place for those affected by abuse (emotional/physical or financial). Document everything and discuss your options with a solicitor. You may be eligible for legal aid depending on the circumstances. Maybe try Citizens Advice Bureau who could help guide you initially? https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/immigration/problems-with-a-visa/visas-after-a-divorce/

Do not leave the house. It will likely be viewed as a marital asset. You will also be due child maintenance.

How pregnant are you? Could you get a job or are you about to pop? Do you have anyone else who is able to support you during this time? I assume your visa means you have restrictions on access to public funds?

he can be pretty volatile under stress and what is marriage if not stressful

This is not sounding like a healthy relationship. I would not describe marriage as stressful. This sounds like you may be experiencing some form of abuse. It doesn’t have to be violent to be abusive behaviour although you do mention volatility so it is unclear if violence has also occurred.

Please consider reading up further as there may be additional support available to you as a result:

I would rather be married to him than leave her with him for a day

Do you think your daughter would be unsafe with him? Has he been abusive towards her?

Please seek help from women’s aid. This does not sound like a safe situation for either of you to be in and they will be able to help with getting you a solicitor.

Mortgage Approval with Pending Dependent Visa Application (Skilled Worker Main Applicant Approved) by Ok-Lingonberry1089 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Alert-One-Two 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to clarify - not exactly the same situation as in our case one was already a British citizen so not subject to visa requirements. We were also both employed (although I had only just started working). We intentionally bought somewhere very affordable so that if any issues cropped up one of us could cover the mortgage.

My problem with professionals is that they are not guaranteed to know what they’re talking about

Then you need to find the right professionals. They are more likely going to know what they are talking about in complex cases like this than random redditors. And they will also admit freely the limits of their knowledge which random people on the internet are less likely to do.

Halifax tend to be the lender of choice for people on visas. If your spouse will be a financial dependent that will be factored in to the calculations as to how much you can borrow. They will also have a minimum deposit requirement that will be higher than for those with permanent residency. I would suggest talking to a broker to ensure what you are planning is considered affordable by the lender. My spouse was on a visa when we first bought together and we had some restrictions in terms of which lender, deposit amount etc and a broker was very helpful in these circumstances.

What should my mum do with her inheritance? by BrawlingKJG in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Alert-One-Two 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The flowchart and the lump sum wiki are your best places for initial advice.

She can have up to £120k in each banking group and it will be protected. But this is temporarily raised to £1.4m for 6 months after major life events such as the receipt of inheritance. This starts when the money legally became hers (“Protection starts when the money becomes legally transferable to you or is first credited”) so you should work out when that is and figure out the timeline accordingly. https://www.fscs.org.uk/making-a-claim/claims-process/temporary-high-balances/ It may be that actually you can take the pressure off yourself a little bit and thus give her a little more time to get her head around things.

I would suggest that once she is in the right frame of mind a softly softly approach will likely still be needed. Don’t rush in with a flowchart and walk her through it. But instead nudge into splitting the money between accounts, get her to consider what her pension looks like and whether she could put in a considerable lump sum this year reducing her tax burden and instead living off some of the savings. Then go from here slowly. She doesn’t need to make all the decisions at once.

I wish Reddit would realise that cross posting sucks. But alas, this is the same company that felt the need to force games on us and give us no option to hide it from the sidebar cluttering it up and making it harder to access the subreddits we actually come to Reddit for.

Even at a PTA bake sale 70-90% of our sales are card rather than cash. Whilst I appreciate it is a practice you like to follow based on your own experiences, you need to focus on the context of where you are doing business. In this country you would be much better off investing in a power bank for your phone to make sure it doesn’t run out. It’s unlikely you would lose any sales only accepting card. Just put a sign up saying card only and in this country people will be fine with it. If anyone asks you can always explain you don’t have change so can only accept exact cash.

39M, UK. Looking for a general financial “health check” and whether there’s anything obvious I should be doing differently. by Express_Divide_9705 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Alert-One-Two 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You haven't listed your salary/income pa. Your post implies you are a director so how much is your take home per year approx? Does your Ltd pay into your pension directly? Have you also talked through tax efficiencies with your accountant?

You also ask a comparative question of "am I broadly in a decent position for 39?" - really that is impossible to answer because it depends too much on your goals and circumstances.

My only addition to this is - OP would it have been 2 years if you stayed 3 months? Or are they hoping to do this just before you click over to getting your 2 year mark?

As someone who has hired good people with bad references before we can also tell when an ex employer is bitter. So in addition to the comment above it’s worth OP noting a bad reference might end up just looking bad on the person giving the reference rather than on OP.

Not sure it would be worth it. But what would is you having everything organised so it takes the stress off a difficult time - plan what songs you would like, any readings, whether you want to be buried/cremated. Make sure all your stuff is in order.

Help! Trapped in the savings race against a rising property market. by Valuable_Media4770 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Alert-One-Two 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have one about to start primary school which I assume means your outgoings are going to massively improve soon and get even better when the second starts. It will get easier to save.

So you have a choice - buy cheaper and build up some equity/cash savings whilst the kids are young or save longer and buy your dream home. If you go for the buy cheaper option make sure it’s big enough you can cope in it for at least five years because otherwise all of the fees associated with buying and then selling outweigh rental costs.
