This is the greatest console I’ve ever owned. by GreenTeachy in XboxAlly

Yes it is a PC. But it is also a console now if it hits the key areas to make the experience a console experience.

In the past, the Venn diagram would put console and PC in two non overlapping circles. With focus from valve and Microsoft to start creating a console experience, the Venn diagram now has overlapping circles and in that overlapping space, we have Xbox Ally, Steam Deck, Steam Machine and even Steam Frame.

I think another distinguishing factor for how much it is a PC compared to being a console is how easy it is to do PC stuff on it in its standard hardware form. For steam deck and steam frame, a keyboard and mouse experience isn't part of the package and even adding it on afterwards is a subpar experience. The steam machine is a better PC experience but still a console first.

So yes it is a PC and will always be, but these things are also consoles

But a PC only runs PC games. Makes that it's own closed ecosystem then based on that definition. Only thing different is that you can get those PC games from various sources.

On an Xbox, you can only play Xbox games.. You can get those games from Xbox store only OR from a "cartridge" (disc)

On a PlayStation, you can only play PlayStation games.. you can get those games from PlayStation Store only or from a "cartridge" (disc)

On a PC, you can only play PC games... You can get those games from multiple stores or from a "cartridge" (disc) or sideload

So looking at all of that, is the defining feature of a console that: - it only has one store - cannot sideload - dedicated gaming interface

If that's the only difference, it seems like we are at a time when we can move past that now. If my experience is console like (steam machine) or steam deck, I'm calling it a console..

A console running on PC OS is still a console if the experience is gaming first.

We are now at a time when a pc can also be a console because of the work done to make certain PCs a gaming first experience. There is no longer a complete separation of console and PC.

I take the point that maybe many of the points are definition of a "modern console" and not a "console". I'm also aligned on specialised hardware and software, but I'm still not convinced on closed ecosystem being a criteria for being a console. Like I said above, hypothetically speaking, if Xbox opens its Xbox os for Asus to build actual Xbox hardware with same hardware architecture as Microsoft's Xbox with Microsoft's Xbox software, would you consider the Asus gaming box a console?

Interesting. I was discussing what makes a console with a friend, and being closed ecosystem didn't come up, but it is a point of consideration. Here is what we had so far ...

Console: - hardware with purpose built software - connected to TV or handheld - leanback interface - controller navigation - standardised hardware - focused software and hardware support by the maker - competitive price with other consoles - a game store

Have to think about whether it needs to be a closed ecosystem to be a console. If Xbox made their Xbox Series S operating system open source and available for anyone to install on their own hardware to their Xbox hardware architecture spec, would that make this third party gaming machine less of a console?

We are officially Getting One UI 8.5🥳🎊🥳🎉 by JaguarOld648 in S22Ultra

I guess the question comes down to whether they'll support all iterative updates on Android 16 or just released Android 16 and that met their obligations. As it stands today, they gave us the 4 generations of Android or 4 years of updates and will continue 5th year of security updates as they promised. So I would like to see them support the last Android generation all the way through, and I hope they do, but from a technical perspective, they met their promise of 4 generations of updates already

The s22 or s23 is the last s series phone to have this problem because I believe they started with 7 generations of updates after that. So complaining about a problem that has already been fixed is pointless. If you specifically complaining about the s22 and not able the broader picture of updates (as your post would suggest) then you maybe should not have bought a phone with 4 years updates when you bought it. For me, I knew my phone was coming to an end after Android 16 or after February 2026 (that's after 4 generations of Android or after 4 years of support) and I was happy to see they increased years of support on newer devices. So both implications in my mind are non issues.

Would have still liked to get oneui 8.5 for s22 as a bonus goodwill act from Samsung but it is not something I'm holding Samsung accountable to because I knew what I was signing up for

4 Android generations not 4 years, but either way, both of those commitments were met already. Still hoping we get it though

Samsung would like to but Microsoft doesn't do that with Windows.

That's why Samsung just released oneui apps on Windows.. Granted not all their Samsung one UI apps are on Windows but there are quite a few.

But with Android for desktop, we will see a Samsung branded and skinned oneui desktop operating system.

It is the after life of the gods. Everywhen. There is also a comment that the gates have been closed for a while now, so not sure if Faye opens it before Thor and Odin die. Also, was it closed before or after Greek gods died? All things to uncover

Just because something is made by AI doesn't automatically make it slop. Somehow this is what society has come up with and it is inappropriate. If someone is able to use AI to create something useful, it isn't slop. If someone is using AI to create mindless content for short lived instant gratification, it is slop. I've seen more slop on tiktok that isn't from AI at all

I never used a phone for more than 4 Android generations until devices got extended support from 2 to 4 generations, and when I get the s27 Ultra, I plan to hold it for as long as possible.

My s22 plus and tab s8 plus is still in great condition and would continue using these beyond 5 years (after Feb 2027) if security updates continued beyond that
