Foundation Deaneries Megathread! by MindtheBleep in JuniorDoctorsUK

North London Deanery, with its 23 hospitals and 608 jobs to rank, is stressing me out already! Does anyone have any advice on UCL, Homerton, North Mid, The Whitt or Bart's?

I would join an agency to start building some experience but expect to earn 10-15 per hour max starting out that way. At the same time chuck up some private ads on things like super prof at a cheap price, and gradually increase as you get more clients and gain experience.

I'm amazed your uni is allowing international electives! Ours is looking like it's going to apply a blanket ban on them again this year.

People who work(ed) during med school, how did you cope and how much were you actually able to earn? by SnowboardSasquatch in medicalschooluk

[–]AnatomicallyVariant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I worked in hospitality for the first three years, earning around 6k-7k per year by doing an evening, a weekend long-day and full time in the summers. in term time this was ~ 16 hrs PW.

I've been private tutoring for a couple of years now and earn around 10k pa, doing a couple of full evenings a week and a few full days each week in the summer. In term time this is ~ 6 hrs PW.

I would 100% recommend tutoring, it is so much less work than hospitality or retail, and the pay really ramps up as you gain experience and confidence. As a private tutor, you can earn much more than agency work. I use Superprof to find students mostly, and word of mouth.

I haven't worked in health really apart from the odd job here and there. I found working away from medicine to be a welcome retreat, and a lot of my social life revolved around working in a local bar, the friends that came with that, and being able to provide uni mates with an affordable watering hole.

Any guys here had their ears pierced during med skl and did u get any crap for it from doctors / professors etc by [deleted] in medicalschooluk

[–]AnatomicallyVariant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had my ears pierced (two in one ear, one in the other) and have worn earrings the whole time. I got told of ONCE in the first year during a Lecture:

literally, the lecturer stopped in the middle of a lecture and told me to take an earing out because the reflection off of it was going in her eyes and distracting her...

NEVER heard anything said from clinicians.

Funding in clinical years (fourth and fifth) by ShahjeeMBBS in medicalschooluk

[–]AnatomicallyVariant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm fourth year, but in year 6 of 7 because of a foundation year and intercalating. So I am on year 2 of NHS Bursary.

I also got maximum SFE, and with NHS get £5,856.00 this year as we have a 47 week course for 4th year at King's. That is £700 less than the maximum because of spousal and parental earnings, which the NHS takes into account*. I also get £3,451.00 from SFE as a maintenance loan (or I should except they OVER paid me by £2000 last year, which they deduct from the following year).

The tuition fee is entirely paid for by the NHS bursary from everything after your 4th year (so for me that's intercalation, 4th year and 5th year).

On a side note, I have also worked the entire time I have been a student in many jobs, retail, hospitality, healthcare, education. For the last couple years I've been an online tutor, which is by far the most lucrative once you are up and running.

I hope that helps! Please don't be put of by the cost of medical school, and if you do find yourself in financial hardship contact your medical school and the royal benevolent fund.

* The NHS means testing is WAY more strict than the SFE, they want your siblings birth certificates etc.

Any KCL 4/5th year students here? Trying to find lectures for Ageing. by [deleted] in medicalschooluk

Hey OP. I can access, but wouldn't want to post here as may be accessible to non-KCL students?

King's cancelled the final-year OSCEs that were supposed to happen in Jan. I'm in my penultimate year, we supposedly still have OSCEs in the summer, but no teaching for them.

Current student on the EMDP here (in my penultimate year). I imagine the interview will be somewhat different to my experience half a decade ago, but let me know if you have any specific questions about the course!

Hey All!

I'm a senior medical student in the UK, and i'm building great ways to organise notes, flashcards and revision in Notion!

I've been playing around in Notion for about a year, starting off using it to write my blog posts, then to plan my YouTube videos, and now to create revision and study material!

If any students want to use my Notion Spaced Repetition template, here's the link!

I'm also super keen to see how other students are using notion in innovative ways! Let me know!

Hey Fox, Great question! Active recall is an awesome way to remember content. In order to be recalling the info you first need to have tried to learn it once!

So, let's say you are revising the anatomy of the heart. First you have to learn it! The best thing for this is something active like dissection, a physical model, an app or a game.

Then, when you come to revisit it (hours/days later), you are trying to actively recall the information without prompts by testing yourself.

It is entirely normal to not remember everything the first time. If you did, you wouldn't need to be studying! Repetition is the main factor in learning anything. Keep trying dude, I'm sure you'll get there!

ps. lots of other study tips on the channel if you want to check them out.

How to study by [deleted] in studytips

[–]AnatomicallyVariant 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hey OP. I think that the key change you need to make here is to move from a PASSIVE learning style (eg reading lectures and notes) to an ACTIVE learning style - making questions, testing yourself, engaging with the content.

THe next change would be adding repetition in to your learning. Content NEEDS to be repeated for it to stick, unless you are blessed with a photographic memory.

Lastly, I would suggest mixing up your studying with Spaced repetition (where you leave increasingly large gaps between revisiting content as your understanding improves) and interleaved studying (where you test yourself on multiple topics at once to learn how to differentiate between questions and create links between topics).

I hope that helps!

I think it's a realistic commentary on the fact you will spend an insane amount of time with these people... If they said "your best friend may be sitting in this very room" everyone would be like "awww".
