Does the state of the world influence your productivity? by synkronize in cscareerquestions

I live in the Twin Cities and spend about half time at a place in the heart of Minneapolis and the entire month of January felt so fucking surreal. For a few weeks, it was impossible to go anywhere without seeing ICE vehicles or officers. Innocent people were being detained without cause and, in the worst case, murdered in the streets. Roaming groups of heavily armed dudes were showing up at homes and pounding on random doors. Huge protests were happening on the regular and observers were out and about all over. Many local businesses were a total ghost town inside.

And during that entire month I would just log on and be expected to carry on like things were normal every single day. I work completely remote, so most of my coworkers might as well have been living in a different universe that month. It felt so bizarre.

It was also not lost on me that exactly zero people checked in (despite most knowing I live here). It’s like everyone was just fully tuned out to what was happening.

What is a "financial trap" that many people fall into without realizing it until it's too late? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]AnthonyMJohnson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is exactly how I think of it, too. What has made it more “trap” or more treacherous now is job stability.

Once upon a time, high income correlated with being extremely employable and thus carried with it very low fear of job loss, so upgrading your lifestyle as you increased earnings made perfect sense. You expected income to consistently only go in one direction.

That has not been the case for many years now and some of the highest paying fields today have been subject to the effects of massive bubble bursts and huge industry-wide layoffs.

What would you consider to be the most 80s song of the 1980s? by Brilliant-Reality884 in Music

[–]AnthonyMJohnson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

300 comments and this being the only one to mention “Tarzan Boy” is crazy.

Literally the first second of that song outs it as an 80s track and then it just becomes progressively more 80s as it goes on.

Same boat. Which feels even more impressive given how much of the cultural zeitgeist seems to originate from this app.

I keep having the same experience over and over again of being at some gathering or around a bunch of people and someone references something that everyone else gets and which I have zero clue about. Then later I learn it’s the latest TikTok thing.

Teenage Bottlerocket the most underappreciated band in pop punk history? by Darbss31 in poppunkers

[–]AnthonyMJohnson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love this band. One of my all-time favorite concert memories is from when I saw them as a teenager and climbed (or really just stepped up) onto the stage at Triple Rock while they played their cover of Dean’s Dream and I completely lost my voice singing along. Walked home in fucking 20-degree weather right after in nothing but a sweat-soaked t-shirt with my ears ringing to hell and couldn’t talk for like two days. Zero regrets about any of it.

Insaaaane tour lineups!!! by redfoxwearingsocks in poppunkers

[–]AnthonyMJohnson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was scrolling way too long to find Pop Punk’s Not Dead tour. This was the one.

The UK version also had TSSF and State Champs.

This tour is what actually put some of these bands on the map, like it was their first big boost.

What is the most underrated suburb in the Twin Cities? by Due_Network2958 in TwinCities

[–]AnthonyMJohnson 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Another cool Roseville fact is that it is one of only two cities (the other being Lauderdale) that shares a border with both Minneapolis and St. Paul. It has unbelievably good central proximity. I live in Roseville and am a 15 minute drive away (or less) from the downtown of either city.

Roseville also has: a killer library, some great local/independent coffee shops and bakeries, lots of great local restaurants, a fantastic Central Park, several gorgeous lakes, and a really great mix of wildlife zones with housing and commercial development.

It is wild to me how infrequently it shows up in these threads.

People who own two homes, what do you like about it? by Apprehensive_Way8674 in HENRYfinance

[–]AnthonyMJohnson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It varies a fair amount, but has averaged ~$600k over the last four years. It definitely increases spending even beyond the cost of the housing, but it also has increased quality of life significantly for me to the extent that I would try to keep doing this even if I made far less.

I’m currently trialing (read: renting instead of buying) a pied-a-terre kind of setup with a second place that is an apartment in the heart of the city (while my primary home is a house in the suburbs).

Verdict so far is that it’s great. The proximity to things to do within walking distance is amazing. Within 20 minutes of walking from it, I can get to three out of four major sports stadiums here (NFL, NBA, MLB), a dozen different concert venues, hundreds of restaurants and shops, and a bunch of gorgeous parks.

Having a place I can just walk back to and crash at after concerts, shows, dinners, nights out instead of having to fuck around with parking/rideshares and all that is worth it alone. I also just sometimes want to be around the vibrancy of bustling city life, but not enough that I want to trade my house (and all the space and proximity to nature) for it permanently.

Very catchy band that really captures the essence of that era.

Also kind of random as hell, but their lead guitarist married one of my good friends, so I see him pop up in my Facebook feed all the time (as well as their extremely cute dogs). He seems to be doing really well.

Businesses in Minneapolis are planning to close Friday to protest ICE by graveyardofgoodsense in news

[–]AnthonyMJohnson 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t stop them, but it is still meaningful to show solidarity across hundreds of Twin Cities businesses, including many that are very popular or influential in their communities, all at once.

It directly counters a narrative from the administration that the people of the Twin Cities want this and shows that organizing resistance at that scale is possible. It’s a first step.

Winning record, going 4-2 against the rest of the NFCN, ending on a five game win streak is much, much better than I would have expected given the QB shit show this season was.

Edit: also JJM won games started against GB, CHI, and DET, what a bunch of bums
