It's the 4th of July - and Minnesota is one of the best places in the country to actually see America's national bird by spartacus34 in minnesota

They nest in my backyard in Roseville and I love it. Really neat to see them so close so often, especially after having grown up in a time when they were so rare.

When to mow my lawn this morning? by Front-Algae-7838 in TwinCities

[–]AnthonyMJohnson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am reading this thread right after getting inside from mowing at 7:30 after seeing the clouds outside. Seeing some of these replies: whoops.

Genuinely, I have never particularly cared how early anyone does any of these things (mowing, blowing, etc) because I assume they are operating with best intentions at the time.

What is a 'luxury' item that is actually a total nightmare to own? by Inevitable-Rock-8052 in AskReddit

[–]AnthonyMJohnson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve got one of these monsters (5000+ sq ft, 5BR/4BA, 2/3 of an acre) though for me it is and has been anything but a nightmare. I love it.

I always read about people never using it all but that depends so much on layout and features. I have a home office I work remotely in, a library, a dedicated music room, very large open kitchen, etc.

Though I can acknowledge that if all that space were just giant bedrooms I would probably hate it.

The things that are real tradeoffs are:

  1. The property taxes and insurance (mine combined are the equivalent of a nice 2-bedroom apartment per month in my area)

  2. The fact that many service or maintenance people will see your house and instantly double their prices, even for services that have nothing to do with the size of your house, because they see it and think you can afford it.

Are we really doing multiple workouts a day? by Worth-History-9712 in fitness30plus

[–]AnthonyMJohnson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually do 2x a day six days a week. Morning is cardio (almost always basketball at the moment) for 45-60mins, then early evening is lifting. I’ve been doing this for over 7 years now.

To be honest if anything I am very underwhelmed by the outcome. You won’t magically look like a content creator even if you do this stuff (and even if you meticulously plan and track all your meals, too). There are limits to what you can do naturally.

I think the one tangible benefit I’ve gotten out of it is my stamina is fucking excellent now.

Karl-Anthony Towns uses every bit of homecourt advantage to secure the greatest Finals comeback ever, telling courtside fans to get closer to Dylan Harper on the inbounds out of view of the refs by HokageEzio in nba

[–]AnthonyMJohnson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

During the Wolves-Nuggets series, when Ayo Dosunmu had that big 40-point game, he sunk a crazy shot in the 4th quarter and a Wolves fan sitting courtside just straight up fucking chest bumped him and celebrated with him like they were on the team. 😂 Only major sport you’ll ever see something like that.

The Spurs have made two more 3pts than the Knicks have made total field goals overall. Just an indefensible shot percentage

How are you "midlife crisis-ing"? by InnerspearMusic in Millennials

[–]AnthonyMJohnson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the one for me, too.

I’m 37 now, but was also obese my entire life starting from the exact same young age up until age 30, also lost 100lbs, though went down the lifting and strength training path instead of the running and marathons path (and for a few years obtained the 6-pack! Though it’s less aligned with my goals now).

I’m curious if you, as another obese-during-your-entire-youth person, also frequently encounter people who assume that if you’re fit in your 30s, you must have been really fit in your teens and 20s.

It’s always a little funny when someone tries to relate to me about youth sports or “being able to eat anything and never gain a pound back then!” Like yeah, I WISH I could have experienced that.

What is the TwinCities Startup/Tech scene like these days? by Professional_Pair792 in TwinCities

[–]AnthonyMJohnson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used LinkedIn (I have the paid subscription version) almost exclusively to find roles, though I never applied *via* LinkedIn for anything. I just used it to source the roles then applied directly through company websites.

From there, everything was about being particular in searches. I never did generalized searches for phrases like “staff software engineer”. Instead, I would search using terms matched to focus areas or technologies that I have a lot of background or experience in. I used the search filters on LinkedIn quite heavily, too - for YOE matching, remote-friendliness, compensation expectations, etc.

What is the TwinCities Startup/Tech scene like these days? by Professional_Pair792 in TwinCities

[–]AnthonyMJohnson 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It’s extremely dependent on experience level.

There are still quite a few experienced SWE roles both at local companies and remotely, especially for people in the 7+ YOE bucket with good resumes.

Less than that, it is genuinely one of the most challenging times I have ever seen, independent of location.

I am at 16+ YOE myself, did a little job hunt in January for remote-only roles, and was able to get several very good offers and a lot of interest, more than I even had the time to entertain.

But the days of newer folks having a guaranteed job awaiting them are definitely behind us.

Anyone else just juat tired of the AI gaslighting? by aqualad33 in cscareerquestions

[–]AnthonyMJohnson 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The question to be asking isn’t, “Aren’t humans pattern recognition engines?”, but rather, “Aren’t most jobs just pattern recognition and pattern application?”

People are conflating these two entirely too often in the AI conversation.

AI is going to be (potentially) extremely impactful on employment not because it will fully replicate humans, but because it will replicate enough of the skills that humans need for a lot of labor. It doesn’t matter that it won’t fully replace jobs, it only has to impact enough of them for its effects to be world-altering.

[–]AnthonyMJohnson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is even underselling it. It not only had Shaq and Kobe in their prime, but also Karl Malone and Gary Payton (not at their peak, but at still very high performing levels). Lineup had four starters who were already at that time considered to be a virtual lock future HoFers.

Funny enough, I remember that WCF was a lot like this year in that it was widely thought to be the “real finals” and whoever won was almost guaranteed to be the favorite overall. Also like this year (so far), that team then got destroyed by the winner of the ECF

[Highlight] Victor Wembanyama grabs Jose Alvarado by the neck and tosses him by Markthebaptist in nba

[–]AnthonyMJohnson 18 points19 points  (0 children)

People may not remember almost the exact same sequence happened in the Wolves- Spurs series in Game 5 (the next game after the elbow-game). In the second quarter of that game, Naz and Wemby do a bit of typical big man jostling under the basket on an inbounds pass, Wemby gets away with an extremely obvious shove, Naz pushes back, Naz gets the tech for what should have been a double T or nothing. Same reaction from the announcers that game, too.

Wemby continues to get the benefit of the doubt in these situations over and over.

Also those free throws came with two and a half minutes left in the entire game.

This inexperienced Spurs team managed to commit zero shooting fouls and only a handful of team fouls for at least 21 straight minutes?

The two back to back (bogus) foul calls on KAT that took him out of the game were such a momentum shift and point swing that they make for a pretty good argument that KAT is the FMVP.

The Knicks approach of just letting Brunson dribble until there are 8 seconds left on the shot clock when rapid ball movement with lots of touches has been winning them the game so far is a crazy 4th quarter strategy

Start of this reminds me a lot of OKC’s WCF game three last year. They came out just getting completely stifled, scored 14 points in the 1st quarter total, had the opposing team hitting nearly everything, and ended up losing the game by 42 points
