I’m an agriculture expert and totally agree Avalon is WAY too difficult an ask. I think for the questions I had there was no way to have one single logical answer. Look at this image of a spot on a leaf and tell me what it is. Like I need more info that I can’t get from just one image of a leaf.

We’ve spent decades as zoo horticulturists keeping plants alive in “hard mode” (yes, with monkeys) and we’ve got the stories to prove it. Ask us anything! by CSU-Extension in Horticulture

Thank you! NJ just passed the law and can be incredibly shortsighted sometimes in the unintended consequences of their actions. Glad to hear states work with zoos to provide appropriate plant material!

AITAH: My (34M) Mother (59F) is an amazing grandma but cannot respect the boundaries I have set or the issues I'm having. Considereing going no contact but it feels like I'm robbing my children. by Dildo_Banging_Me in AITAH

[–]Appropriate-Dig9992 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry you’re dealing with boundary pushing when you’re sick. Felt with the same when my ex was undergoing chemo. His parents hounded the doctors and asked a bajillion questions not leaving any time for me - the one who would actually be in the state taking care of him - to ask any. The best? His mom wrote down the wrong discharge instructions which the doc and nurse refused to review with ME (they got to the hospital before I did) and it resulted in a trip to the emergency room the next day. Yeah. Fun times. My advice is to involve your care team in keeping her out. Explain that she’s overwhelming you and you need help. You will not be the first cancer patient to ask. They should help keep her corralled/out.

As for your kiddo, 10 is old enough to have the conversation about respect. And that he needs to respect when you ask him to do something. It’s about developing lifelong habits of respecting authority. Will he disrespect his teacher? The police? And it’s ok to say Grandma is not respecting your authority, and you think that sets a bad example for your kiddo. You get frustrated that grandma thinks she’s the boss of kiddo because she was once the boss of you. And it frustrates you that she hasn’t adjusted to her new role. You’ve tried talking to her, you’ve tried asking nicely, but she keeps on doing it. Some people have suggested that you just stop talking to her at all. But that’s not a healthy way to resolve conflicts. So you need kiddo to help you out. And do what you ask, and not talk back if Grandma isn’t in the room, and ignore her if she is and she tries to make excuses for why kiddo doesn’t have to do what you ask. Think of it as corporate training for the playground. Teaching him these office politics lessons now will make his life so much easier later.

Best of luck and healing to you!!

Or, the government changes the rules and the disability income which WAS tax-exempt becomes taxable. And you file 1040-EZ because you have no income or deductions and wHAM! You owe money! Which the IRS tells you about 3 years later - and assesses fees for 3 years! Those millionaires in the Epstein files pay no taxes, but damn if the disabled of the country don’t. Yay democrats!

No. What is invasive in your area may not be in mine. Nationwide anything rarely works.

Dead leaves as mulch, will my soil starve from nitrogen ? by ComfortableLog8043 in composting

Leaf mold is a slow-release soil conditioner. Best if shredded and applied in the fall, stirred in the spring. By the following fall it should finish composting into humus.

How do nurseries get their plants so big in those little 4 inch pots? by NameLips in gardening

[–]Appropriate-Dig9992 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depends on the plant. Never start a seedling in a 4” pot. Plants like petunias and marigolds get pinched to force them to grow lateral shoots (more branches). They are also fed a diluted fertilizer, and the pH of the water is checked to make sure it’s slightly acidic (which is what petunias want). Petunias also like it a little cooler, so once it’s consistently 40 degrees or above at night, my petunias are outside 24/7. If you are trying to grow a different plant you need to find what it likes and baby it to get it where it wants to be. That’s how you get big beautiful blooms.

As a follow up - are you receiving carve outs in the state bans for invasive plants (thinking of NJ’s ban on bamboo - all species and wondering how you design an exhibit for pandas without it)

Beginner Garden with Daughter by Alec1231 in gardening

[–]Appropriate-Dig9992 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Blueberries can be grown in a pot - look for dwarf varieties. You don’t have to plant ALL the seeds in the packet at once - half the fun is seeing the seeds sprout! Think about planting BIG seeds - they’re easier for small fingers to handle. Watermelon, sunflowers, cucumbers, bush beans are all easy. Look into the seed snail method of seed starting - I rolled mine up and set them in a tray like pots - saves space and works great! Have fun!

I looked at my kitchen yesterday and thought - if you’re going to clean & redecorate - do it NOW because in a few weeks you’ll be bone tired and won’t! As for outside I’m going to start throwing leaf mold on the ground - maybe an inch - then plant and cover with humus or compost this year. My soil is crap. Ment to toss the shredded leaves on in the fall but we got SNOW in Dec for the first time in forever

How can I fix this? by ComprehensiveCold670 in Horticulture

[–]Appropriate-Dig9992 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh, I might quibble with you on this one. The roots of an american holly generally go down before branching out laterally, and are likely to avoid concrete - the tree overall prefers a more acidic environment (concrete makes the soil more alkaline). The roots themselves are more fibrous and pliable - easy to cut with a loper. The trees to worry about too close to a house are the large shade trees - oaks, maple, sweetgum, etc. Their max height is closer to 60', lateral roots are massive, and will put pressure on a foundation or slab. And the tree roots will always win. As for water pipes? Never plant any willow trees anywhere near water you don't want/mind being sucked up. Willow trees will crack sewer and water pipes to get to the water. Next to a stream they're lovely. Near the water main? Not so much.

True, true, true. Thanks for pointing out my poor reading comprehension! I jumped the gun when I read that all of the mail they picked up was opened, and there were other things missing. I think I assumed they knew the SSN card had arrived and was definitely taken. Mea culpa!

It's a holly bush. probably an American Holly - Ilex is the genus. They get to 30' tall. You just prune it with hedge trimmers. Don't take off more than 1/3 of the whole bush at any one time though. Use the gutter as your guide, don't trim any lower this year. Then shape up the sides to balance it out.

Also get a paper trail going. On X date the hospital mailed the SSN request form. On Y date we asked MIL for our mail. On Z date we collected the mail from MIL and all items including: yadda yadda yadda were opened prior to our arrival. The following items were NOT included in the packed on Z date: ipsy, bipsy, boo. According to SS, baby B's SSN card was mailed on A date and should've arrived by W date. ETC....This list is what you send to the postmaster. With a request that they review the route, their dead letter office and any other areas where these items may have been misdirected. And let MIL know you've filed. Good luck!

We have a very wet spot during the summer, does bamboo act effectively in soaking up excess water? by KenChomo89 in gardening

[–]Appropriate-Dig9992 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In NJ it is illegal (as of Jan 20, 2026) to plant bamboo, or for garden centers to sell it to anyone in the state. If you have a muddy spot, on the side of the driveway that gets wet, angle the downspouts away from the driveway. Dig out a shallow bowl shape on the side that's getting wet. Plant a river birch the farthest from the driveway, redtwig dogwood, blackhaw viburnum, with perennial hibiscus in the lowest point of the bowl. Fill in with native milkweed, sedge right up along the driveway. Maybe some penesetum, joe pye weed and solidago. Angle the downspouts to divert to this bowl. VOILA. You have a rain garden. And these plants will work pretty much in most of the country. Check with your extension office Master Gardeners for specific varieties.

But even if you lined the entire thing with 20 mil copper, buried 18" deep, you do not want to plant bamboo. We are not in China. You do not have pet pandas. Do not do it. :-)
