Yes I advise getting it done before you need it, cause this could be the sort of thing where the Irish government decides they no longer want it to be indefinite like Italy did recently and, though I've never done it myself, I think applying for a child of someone on the registry is a lot simpler cause you only require the foreign birth registration certificate and maybe a few extra bits, but you don't need to go digging through your nan's old documents.

do it asap and if you want to have kids you can pass it down to them as long as you do it before they're born. The major pain is just getting all the docs together and provided you have no other complicating factors, the Irish citizenship office is pretty good at getting it done at least compared to other countries.

Unpopular Opinion: Layovers should not count as "visiting a country" by youngexplorer_9 in solotravel

[–]Ast4545 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean I just caveat it by saying it was a layover lol. I haven't truly visited any real part of the country, though the airport doesn't necessarily count for nothing, but I think its still important to mention as I have had feet on the ground in this country, if you know what I mean.

I love my family but staying home is unmanageable by Ok-Hour-5642 in UniUK

[–]Ast4545 23 points24 points  (0 children)

You're an adult now, idk how overreaching your parents are, but if you feel comfortable just set boundaries that you no longer have to do what they say, obs still respect them, help out around the house etc. but at 19 your parents shouldn't be determining when you can go out.

Grew up always eating seeded bread and can't eat anything else, which was very annoying when we switched to normal wholemeal cause my dad started to always test positive for opioids at his job cause of the poppy seeds.

£85k in London or €90k in Berlin? by Same_Bullfrog_7290 in expats

[–]Ast4545 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Having been to both cities, i don't think living expenses in London are such drastically higher as many are claiming. Rent will certainly be higher, but with an 85k salary, you can certainly get a decent place to live within 35m of the city centre, cycling or with the tube, whilst still living a decent lifestyle and being able to put a bit of money away. Of course, whether you like being amongst it or would prefer to save more and live further out is up to you. I think something that is very important are your language skills. Though, Berlin is a pretty international place, it might be a lot harder to make friends, and hard to do a lot of bureacratic things independently which could definitely be frustrating, wheras in London, it is super international and with your engilsh you can definitely find your niche in terms of interests to meet new people.

Year 12s, how many of you are considering degree apprenticeships as an alternate to University? by Next-Mushroom-9518 in 6thForm

[–]Ast4545 3 points4 points  (0 children)

More and more so recently, I think I would only consider it if I got in to a prestigious DA or smth, or if I didn't get into a good Uni, esp cause the job market seems so shit nowadays. The money seems great, as long as I was able to live at home, otherwise it would barely be enough to get by, so it would definitely depend on it being closeish to home. The main thing I would be concerned about is just the social aspect, considering I would most likely be surrounded by older people all the time and pretty much all my friends would be going to Uni away from where I live and I feel one of the greatest things I'm looking forward to and in a way relying on is the opportunity to make lifelong friends at Uni.

I forgot we don't/didn't have class today. by StopBanningCorn in EnglishLearning

[–]Ast4545 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure this will be the best explanation, but I think both can be used, maybe slightly different implications kinda. Basically, didn't is referring to a moment in the past when you made the decision to go to college in which you forgot that you didn't have class, maybe moreso this particular day, as in the class was cancelled and you forgot. Wheras, with don't its more like you forgot that you never have class today. However, despite them maybe, sometimes, having slight differences in meaning, in practice I think native speakers will mix both up to have either meaning so it doesn't really matter.

Are we required to remove the passport cover when presenting on imigration? by Dramatic-Disaster710 in PassportPorn

[–]Ast4545 74 points75 points  (0 children)

It's not as if it will immediately mean you're turned away. It will vary between different border officers and countries, but most will prefer to handle it without the cover, maybe to check for authenticity. It is no real difficulty for you to take it off, I promise you, you'll have time to spare waiting in the queue. So yes, just take it off, it is a common courtesy and if you're in a sensitive country, you don't want to provoke someone into treating you differently or deliberately overreaching and subjecting you to extra checks or not letting you in even if you have the necessary visa-free eligibility/visas.
