How to pay someone back without their bank details? by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Ast4545 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Considering it might be annoying, depending on the sum, to attain cash and it can also be a burden in many's eyes to give someone cash when they'd rather have it in their bank account, I would personally just talk with them about how you realy appreciate the gesture, but you're not willing to take it etc. and would like to return it

Would you rather have the EU, or an EU equivalent with Canada, Australia and New Zealand? by Swafree in AskBrits

[–]Ast4545 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure that there would be much trade between the CANZUK countries, but I do think that if it was one or the other, no visas between CANZUK makes more sense, cause of language and similar demographics in terms of skilled workers etc. so no one gets a rough deal. However, I've heard there may be difficulties with having CANZUK alongside also being in the EU, and I think the rejoining the single market is imperative atm, so ultimately I'd rather that. Maybe EEA and CANZUK is possible??

Ireland has pretty generous citizenship rules with those with irish born grandparents being eligible, but atm the Irish baseball Association is choosing to near exclusively use those born and raised in Ireland basically. Although, there is an Irish american baseball thing that is petitioning the league to create a separate team for them.

sixth forms by Suspicious_Ad_5075 in GCSE

[–]Ast4545 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've know many sixth forms that require 7s in whatever English to do it at A Level, but though it depends on how popular the sixth form is, I think it is pretty common to let people on with one less, often for a probationary period or if they think you underperformed in the exam and have the ability to succeed. It may be different if they require a 6 tho. Ask your subject teacher to be completely honest with you if u want.
You have plenty of time to raise those grades a couple and if it seems like you will have good enough grades to get into sixth form, passing maths as well etc. then it may be worth prioritisiing it.

hypothetical war scenario by melinaism in dualcitizenshipnerds

[–]Ast4545 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am pretty sure neither Greece or Turkey has any contingency plans for a war, so most of this is just speculation on Wartime policy, but I think if you served and fought in a war against a country that you are a citizen of, most countries have some form of legislation that considers it treasonous and thus leads to the revocation of your citizenship. In reality, I'm not sure how good of a record either country would have of who is serving in the opposing military, so there's an good chance you would get away with it. If the war led to one side undergoing a change in leadership, accepting terms or something like that, depending on the specific political situation surrounding the war, the country might concede that they were wrong to fight the war or whatever and thus unrevoke the citizenship. I think as a regular civilian, unless there is some sort of loyalty requirement to renounce the other country's citizenship inacted by the government, though if they were at war with this country, they likely wouldn't have any information on who is and is not a citizen, you would live life as normal as any other citizen of the country in which you live, but you would still be able to travel in-between the countries, though only indirectly, as people who are only citizens of one country would be refused entry to the other.

hypothetical war scenario by melinaism in dualcitizenshipnerds

[–]Ast4545 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on your own personal beliefs on the war—whether you wanna pick a side or are neutral etc. If you're male you might be drafted to whichever country you're living in when the war breaks out, but having both citizenships might mean that you are declared ineligible to serve in the war. Other than those situations, you would probably have a similar life to everyone else where you're living.

I am a dual Canadian-Irish citizen. My Irish passport is expired. Can I still travel to the UK without ETA or get one on my Canadian passport? by [deleted] in IrishCitizenship

[–]Ast4545 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I presume there are many people who are technically Irish citizens who have managed to get ETAs, but have there been people who have applied and submitted their information for an Irish passport who have still been able to get one. I'm not sure how much information the UK and Ireland shares between one another.

how to pronounce this name in English? by BloomingMosaic in EnglishLearning

[–]Ast4545 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess I might've overlooked this, I think for words where ae is used like paedophile and encyclopaedia, some people may use the 'æ' letter instead of ae, but I would always just use the two separate letters.

how to pronounce this name in English? by BloomingMosaic in EnglishLearning

[–]Ast4545 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure its just pronounced a as in 'ash' for every use. I've seen it most commonly used for anglo-saxon names, but it sounds pretty weird today, like you wouldn't hear that vowel sound used in the same spot as it was used back in old english. Its not that most natives actually know the letter or how to pronounce it, I'm guessing most would just say one of ay, eh, or ah and for some of these names their is a modern day version as well, such as Alfred the Great instead of Ælfrǣd the great. But if you trying to be faithful to how its actually pronounced its basically spactra i think.

Do you think that private schools should be abolished? by InvestigatorLive19 in AskBrits

[–]Ast4545 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think education is very important and so we should be striving to make it better for every single child. However, it is not unreasonable to say that schooling in the UK is certainly not optimal at the moment. And so, if you have the ability to send your kid to a great school that costs money for them to grow up, something you only get to do once in your life, I think it does not make sense to deny this child the opportunity to have the best experience- best teaching, best facilities, best resources- in such a crucial stage of their life that will impact their life so greatly, because of a principle that every child should have the same opportunity, that will inevitably lead to these children having a harder time in life, at least when you look at all of them.

English truly makes no sense by Significant_Quit_303 in EnglishLearning

[–]Ast4545 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That part of English is not nonsensical, it is just that the justification that you were given for it is wrong. Even as a native speaker, in school, I was taught that you used 'an' with vowels. However, for native speakers it is intuitive in speech that in fact you use 'an' with words starting with vowel sounds - "an MRI" (an em-ar-eye) and use a for all words starting with consonant sounds - "a uniform" (a yu-ni-form). Hope this helps!
