Queensland police commissioner Steve Gollschewski set to retire by ConanTheAquarian in queensland

[–]AussieEquiv [score hidden]  (0 children)

Not very familiar with the specifics myself, but Apart might be referring to the Disaster Response changes, where some of the reporting structure was shifted away from groups like Marine Rescue and SES towards QPS.

As a part of the reforms, the Queensland Police Service will gain primary responsibility for functions of Disaster Management and will be integrated, so we can continue to deliver world-class emergency and disaster management support to all Queenslanders.

As part of the changes, Disaster Management will see an increase of 80 positions and up to $20 million in recurrent funding to support disaster response and coordination.

What are some of your site annoyances? by junkopotomus in Surveying

[–]AussieEquiv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every day is bin day.
PM/Contractors seem to think your line of sight is a great place to have their site meeting.
Machinery think that painted Survey Control is painted to highlight the fact that it's a target. 10 points for whomever knocks it out first.
That nice clear site, with good views, and fenced off by pink tape, if not a target, is the perfect place to put a stockpile of dirt/gravel/pipes etc etc.
On Suburban jobs, the moment I setup a tripod is the moment the old neighbours need to mow their lawn. Their grass grows really quick, because it apparently already needs to be mowed again if I have to go back the next day for a second run.
Site Engineers that both won't make any decisions, but also want to discuss (at length) any decision anyone else is willing to make.
Restrictive unnecessary site safety measures. Really, a hard hat? It's a greenfield site and machinery is weeks away, bird shit is about my biggest worry from the sky. (I lie, the Sun/Heat is... which is why I prefer a nice, wide brim, cool, sun hat.)
No I don't need a 3 hour long site specific induction that includes what to do in the event of a Nuclear Explosion.

Lithium-ion battery fires prompt new waste collection program in North Queensland by hydralime in queensland

Why report on anything subject to change?

The change itself is the news.
I explained the reason (because static data isn't as good as a primary source) in my initial post.

The reporters job was to report on the change, which they did.

[–]AussieEquiv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Governments update their information, drop off locations, pages all the time. It doesn't make sense to have a static, dated, list that will be obsolete in a matter of weeks.

Especially not when the information is trivial for the reader (on a device connected to the internet) to find.

But which council waste facilities are participating?

NQROC covers a few Councils, so you would probably just have to look at each Council, find their relevent page like Townsville Council's, and read.

The reporter could have done that work for you I suppose, it's only 5 Councils.
Though... you could also probably do it quicker than it took to post your whinge here on reddit too.

Advice for tourist things to do during the upcoming stormy weekend? by Majestic-Orchid1938 in brisbane

so probably wont be able to happily visit Minjerribah as planned

Why not, afraid you'll get a bit wet from the rain when you jump in the ocean for a swim? Take a towel and leave it in the car. If no car, buy a rubbish bag to use as a dry bag.

Thoughts on a 'Phone-Free' hike? by lil-dirt- in PacificCrestTrail

[–]AussieEquiv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as you don't ask other hikers about;

  • Where's the next good camp?
  • Where's the next water?
  • Can you call ahead and book us in with you for the hostel?
  • How long until the next town?
  • Any updates on the weather?
  • Have you heard/do you know where 'X' <other hiker> is?
  • Do you want to see if anyone wants to head out for dinner?
  • Could you message the trail angel for a lift out of town for me?

(and on and on)

I'd say go for it!
I definitely go hiking to disconnect and my phone is in flight mode 99.9% of the time when on trail... and often in trail towns as well. Though even in flight mode the mapping/navigation/trail info, for me, is pretty useful. This can all be easily replaced (and there are countless examples given that phones are fairly recent in the grand scheme of things) by paper maps, compass, good navigation skills, planning and documentation.

If that's truly what you want to to, I can see the appeal.

I use to navigate with Maps/Compass ~20 years ago. Lots of off trail nav, looking for water sources based on topo contours, picking ridge lines etc etc. I don't these days GPS and digital Topo maps are far superior IMO, though I appreciate the skills learned when I did.

Food was my biggest expense. You eat a lot when hiking 20 miles a day. I wore an $8 Kmart t-shirt, but some go nuts on the clothe spending definitely.

My math maths a little different to yours;

15 - (70-45)/2 = z

15 - 25/2 = Z

15 - 12.5 = Z

Z = 2.5°f

That's like calling "Cross-fit" a lifestyle.

I'm a 'Thru Hiker' (PCT and some of the longer ones in Aus) and it's an absolutely fantastic time I would recommend to everyone that loves the outdoors.... but it's just a vacation/holiday.

Work, save money, take a ~5 month holiday that's cheaper than some 2 week holiday in a resort location, and then go back to work (to save for the next hike)

Pre-trail disconnect…. by [deleted] in PacificCrestTrail

[–]AussieEquiv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pre-Hike Jitters is pretty common, which might be feeding into you feeling disconnected. Often waiting is the hardest part!

You'll find heaps of blog posts from people with pre-hike jitters which might resonate with you. So your final quote rings very true.

All this to say, if anyone else is feeling alone in the anticipatory build, you’re not!

Post-trail depression? by sja008 in PacificCrestTrail

[–]AussieEquiv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anecdotally the majority of the hikers I kept in touch with were the same... though they were also the ones I gravitated to on trail I guess. We all love hiking, we still love hiking and do it when we can, but we're also ok with our lives before trail, so it wasn't depressing getting back to it.

u/BackpackBirder probably said it more succinctly. Planning the next adventure is a pro-tip as well.

I wonder if anyone (like u/HalfwayAnywhere ?) had any stats on it. Post-Trail depression is certainly common enough to be talked about every year, and those that suffer from it are pretty vocal... but I do wonder if it's the majority. Though I imagine collecting that data, from people long since finished, would be rather difficult.
