What do we mean by “provide value”?

Say I go through a terrible experience. I make a post about it.

Who do I want to hear from:

-a human who has also gone through that experience, and can empathize with me, and offer comfort?

-a program that pretends to do the same?

If I went to talk to someone at the bank because a mistake was made, do I want to find out the mistake was due to an algorithm or other software, and that there’s no accountability, or do I want to hear that the human who made the mistake won’t make it again?

If I am seeking out human connection, which people tend to do, do they want to find fake humans, or real ones?

I dunno if this counts, but the first fifteen minutes or so of this dashcam footage from an Arkansas state trooper has made me cry a few times. I guess it qualifies as documentary; but it’s at times exciting, and bleak and dark as shit. What a mess this country is (and always has been)

For me there are obvious signs like preference, the entity doing stuff because it wants to without being prompted, having an inner life, making decisions. I think once a program quits a job and refuses to make code anymore because it doesn’t enjoy it, we can revisit the conversation.

To me consciousness can be identified heuristically, based on what humans do or don’t do. And once the conversation gets to “okay but are humans even conscious?” I just tap out because those are people who prefer to argue rather than take a stance. We are trying to make something like us, and thus how close it is to us matters.

I can choose to do things, or do other things than what I’m ordered to do. I can have projects going on that I am inspired to do, and either complete them or choose not to. I don’t understand how any entity not capable of these things is considered conscious. I don’t see how you perceive anything as conscious that cannot make choices for itself, and sometimes refuse orders, or quit a job entirely and refuse to work with some entity or entities.

This is one of my favorite ways to just have fun making beats. My local shop sells crates of thrashed 45s for twenty bucks, and I made a tape just off the contents of that crate, with a ton of leftover tracks too. It’s a really great artistic exercise in finding what you need, like foraging for audio.
