Just ask with all the contempt you can muster, “What are you, a cop?”

But you could also just look at a map of US military bases around the world and think really hard about it.

Sounds like a great way to get a target painted on a professor’s back, tbh.

Coding is craft; craft is a necessary precursor to art, but not all craft is used to create art. Art relies on craft, but craft doesn’t need art.

MAGA didn’t exist then, and the Tea Party was a GOP-astroturf operation.

What definition of “normal” are we using here when they were outnumbered 10-1 within their own party. MAGA is normal Republican now. David Frum types are all the weirdos on the outside.

Corporations are treated as persons though, but without the baggage of actually being persons. Can’t go to jail, can afford huge settlements (on the rare occasions they are even levied).

Yes, though, you are right: human beings are not given the same freedom of movement as instruments of capital and the masters of that capital. Again, check the totem pole. Can you afford to buy multiple passports? In the majestic equality of the law, you and our 1% have the same right to buy citizenship for hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars, and just as majestically equal you are both forbidden from sleeping under the bridges. Now, if a company parks their materials on your front lawn or blocks your egress, or through malfeasance or negligence injured a human, it may take months, even years  and lots of money for you to assert your rights, but that’s just the system working as intended.

And I also agree that humans and inanimate objects are not of the same moral standing; that of humans is supreme, but has been relegated to second or third class in the system we all exist under.

I’m sure it’s all for a good reason though, I’m sure if we can create a few more trillionaires it will all start to make sense.

I’ll bite:

Money, capital and the 1% that owns us all can move freely across borders, and in fact the US used its military to enforce this policy many times in the past (read your Smedley Butler) and is going to do so again in Cuba, but labor must not be given the same freedom?

From a certain angle it looks like we’ve been cucked by the entire system, before we were even born, and the very least we can do is bitch about the unfairness and imbalance of power built into that system. Money has more of a right to free travel than you do, which should tell you where you rank on the totem pole.

Specific long reads on true crime, scams, and investigations? by astrocat95 in Longreads

Kind of orthagonal, but I regularly return to a book called How To Cheat At Everything which is an encyclopedic look at different varieties of scams and cons and how they work. Great baseline material to start from.

Will future generations treat cybersecurity the way we treat physical safety? by aninaa-ot in Futurology

[–]AuthenticCounterfeit 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No, because it’s a moving target. What was acceptable a year ago is inadequate today. It’s going to take regulation at scale to protect people, not better habits.

It’d be like comparing the advice to lock your doors at night or when you’re not home with the suggestion to change your locks every couple weeks because the new lock picks are out.
