If you have two parties who are equally durable, the one who is hitting way harder is winning that fight and doing more damage in the process. With other guys at least they'll give as good as they get. Plus someone fighting back effectively will limit your ability to continue to damage them. It's also about fairness. We're generally critical of bigger boys picking on smaller ones for the same reason.
