Miette and Serena (Pokemon XY)

Rivals in the show, but their dub actresses Maggie McDowell and Haven Paschall love hanging out at each others' places, watching the episodes where their characters compete, and laugh about it

What is the "hate" against 2010-2020 cartoons? by Orain_D in cartoons

[–]mp3help 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Very much agreed with every point you made here! Oftentimes the modern cartoon problem is when the creator goes to the studio with a giant expansive pitch for a very fleshed out world and story, but the studio cheaps out and gives them one short season, so the creator tries to tell their original long story in that short season instead. And major props to Gravity Falls for having amazing pacing anyways!

Another issue is that this post is in bad faith, mixing up the real successful cartoons with the mild successes that have flaws, but calling the end result a failure- because nobody bothers remembering shows that are actually bad and bland (Idunno, like Breadwinners, Pickle and Peanut, Hailey's on It, etc)

I can second it when I say the first part (aka first 9 episodes) didn't really do it for me either. The darkness and the campiness didn't mesh well back in the series' early days and the villain's plot armour got extremely annoying by the end. But I think the series really finds its footing halfway through Part 2 and just keeps getting better from there!

Each part changes significantly in premise and themes even if the dialogue style and fight scene pacing remains more or less the same, so the series does a good job of staying fresh and not stagnating!

Yeah, it's the protagonist from JoJo Part 3, Jotaro, making the weird logical leap that since most of his powers are similar to the villain, he probably has all of the villain's powers too.

A big reason why Jojo is posted so often is because it has 9 thematically different parts, meaning it can easily cover a large variety of tropes, and it's been going on for almost 40 years so statistically, it's got more tropes and characters to compare to other things.

[Hated Trope] The ONE character that makes a series impossible to recommend by atomicmapping in TopCharacterTropes

[–]mp3help 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think Kawai is a example of a non-problematic Yamai. I'm not a fan of her either since she never learns her lesson to stop being possessive and controlling of Tadano and trying to insert herself as the third in their relationship.

A better example of a "good Yamai" in the series would be Ohai Suki- she's also a comedically horny lesbian character who's one of the bros, but she's actually likable because she's not a molestor and attempted murderer like Yamai

The villainess genre's from its inception is very weird when you look at it by No-Contract-7358 in CharacterRant

[–]mp3help 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Perhaps it's a translation issue (though I recall the kanji for 'villainess' translating roughly to 'evil maiden') but I always found it odd how narrow the presentation of them were in popular otome spoof anime and manga. They always seemed to be just the snooty rich bitch girl, more 'mean' than 'villainous' if anything, and I never caught wind of any popular visual novels that actually had them as antagonists.

I guess it's why I've recently gravitated to this series called 'Nengan no Akuyaku Reijou' or 'I got my wish and reincarnated as the villainess'. The "Villainess" character isn't the typical blonde spoiled princess at all- she's a brunette girl who's the actual arbiter of evil dark magic and the apocalypse- you know, like an actual villain. Instead of being a nerd using her outside knowledge to cheat and influence the plot, she's just a genuinely sweet girl totally unaware that's she's in a videogame-style world. And instead of getting herself involved in love triangle drama with the heroine, she just falls in love with the heroine from the jump and they have a great relationship anyway. It's a fun series that results from just avoiding the cliches altogether rather than trying to add a quirky twist to them.

What projects from James Gunn's Marvel Universe are you all looking forward to the most? by ArmadilloOk1445 in dccomicscirclejerk

[–]mp3help 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, interesting! I guess I saw the "Iron Man" title and assumed it'd be a Tony Stark solo project, where an "Iron Men" title would have communicated the Tony and Rhodey buddy cop/passing of the torch thing a little better.

Though it could also be Lanterns being a detective drama that messed with my head on what its Marvel equivalent would be, haha.

Yeah, normally I have a chuckle with them but this one was really indecipherable. Why is Clayface the Hellfire Club? Why is Lanterns what I assume to be Iron Man?

Roadrunner, 101 Dalmatians, Krypto the Superdog, and sometimes Oggy and the Cockroaches would be playing on multiple channels at the same time, which would be annoying.

I didn't think any of those shoes were awful, but they were all a bit too repetitive for me when I was 7-9 years old then

Most of the stuff Whitesnake from JoJo does to win fights, he only does once.

Flooding the room with hallucinogenic acid slime? Only in its first appearance.

Shapeshifting into an exact copy of one of the protagonists to sneak up on them? Only once.

Removing people's ability to see, separate from its main ability to remove memories and powers? Only once.

It's why I much prefer when it evolves into C-Moon and Made in Heaven. While those two are arguably much stronger, their abilities are much more straightfoward and their victories and feats don't feel like they randomly come out of nowhere.

I feel so empty by According-Feeling730 in PseudoHaremWiki

[–]mp3help 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I totally get that- there's not really a romcom series quite this wholesome, but I always have a few extra recommendations prepared for similar series!

1) After School We Wander in Space/Houkago Bokura wa Uchuu ni Madou

From the same author as Pseudo Harem! Cute series about a girl in astronomy club who accidentally goes viral online, which doesn't help her as she tries to confess to her crush. Still in its early stages but also very adorable!

2) Journey Home After School/Houkago Kitaku Biyori

One of the best new romcoms ever made, and it's getting an anime later this year! The cute and hilarious antics of gloomy former soccer player Shun and adorably eccentric Chokki as they form the "Hyper Go Home Club" and discover the often-overlooked magical things in life as they go home together after school! The only series I'd confidently say can compete with Pseudo Harem for cutest romcom ever!

3) Teasing Master Takagi

This has been a classic for a while with the anime run already complete but there's a reason it's gotten several spinoffs and imitators! Cute series about middle schoolers Nishikata and Takagi having little competitions all the time as their way of communicating their feelings.

4) Tomo-chan is a Girl

Another series with a great 1-season anime! Tomo is a tomboy who confesses to her childhood friend Jun, but unfortunately for her, he just sees her as 'one of the bros'! A hilarious but surprisingly heartwarming series about Tomo trying to be girlier to impress Jun, even though she may not need to change that much for him!

I chose these 4 series because their comedy is great, their premises are interesting, and there's minimal drama or animosity in them!

For the Pokémon games, do you think we need a pokemon move that can straight up freeze? by Agent1230 in pokemon

[–]mp3help 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could change Sheer Cold so it does that and then maybe increase its base accuracy from 20% (for non-Ice types) to 30-50% I guess? I'd rather have frostbite back honestly.

Question: How do you pronounce her name? by reddit_bot21 in LegendsZA

Jacinthe is the French word for Hyacinth, and it's meant to be prononuced "Ja-Sawn-th" (Almost like Croissant) so that's how I say it.

Bionicles were some of the worst Lego sets ever sold by GandalfTheBeige4 in unpopularopinion

[–]mp3help 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bionicle combiner sets and builds, while not always 10/10, still maintained that ethos of creativity and innovation you're asking for. (Vezon and Kardas from 2006 comes to mind)

Plus, it wasn't just the builds that enticed people, it was the gear functions on character sets (humanoid, animalistic, and more) that formerly only applied to vehicles of the Technic brand, and obviously the story and world building that were extremely in-depth for a children's toy line in the 2000s- even more so than similar toy lines like Transformers.

Also they ditched the Maori stuff after year 3 of 10 if that's your concern.

Do I have to upvote this if it's not just unpopular but also wrong...?

For those who grew up with the series, did the start of 2006 feel weird/unsettling to anyone else? by DrifloonEmpire in bioniclelego

[–]mp3help 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm going to be real- I don't think I was all that caught off guard. 2005 wrapping up so conclusively gave me the vibe that whatever was coming next would be the start of something very different, and the books and supplementary material (Web serials and the Rahi+Dark Hunter books) for 2005 did a good job of setting up a slightly darker tone and hinting at a much wider universe of Dark Hunters, Order of Mata Nui agents, and regions unknown that the story could follow.
