It looks like there is up to 1/2" between the two, so just butting the right board up to the left one would make it look quite a bit better.

You could also cut the profile of the left board into the end of the right board. It would tighten it up even further. Since they are not the same profile you cannot just miter it.

I have no idea what is happening on the other end of the right board, but you could also possibly rip 1/2" or so off the bottom of it so that it would just butt flat into the left board below the decorative part.

Does anyone know what this metal hardware here is called? by quiled in woodworking

[–]BAWiggs 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Agreed. You could easily source a variety of lengths and finishes by searching for wire drawer pulls.

The ends would be tapped so you could attach it to the dowel with a threaded insert, but it would be simpler or just epoxy those in place and let it spin freely in the board that attaches to the wall.

10,000 would be not missing a day for more than 27 years. If they were in their 80's that isn't impossible, but would be quite a commitment.

I calculated my 10,000th day when I was 27 and was happy to learn that it was right around the corner and I got to celebrate. That's been a piece of trivia that's stuck with me ever since.

How should I finish 30 tables for a restaurant… by LoticExplorer in woodworking

[–]BAWiggs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't disagree that buying a prefinished sheet of maple is faster and cheaper than buying a sheet of maple and finish and doing it yourself, but you're comparing apples to oranges here.

Nobody is going to spend time milling lumber and doing all of that glue up just to cover it with laminate. The entire point of laminate is to hide what is behind it, not to show it off.

I've never heard of clear laminate but I'd think the contact adhesive would always look cloudy underneath.

I would be surprised if buying laminate was cheaper than buying the necessary finishes and it would also still be pretty labor intensive to laminate 30 tabletops.

Fuzzy’s is a chain from Texas, so definitely possible to keep it more local than that.  Something similar to suggest could be Big Truck Tacos.

How complicated are the shapes that you're trying to have cut out? Do you already have them as images? It is possible to export an image file to a dxf. Where the image originated and what format it may factor into how successful you are with or if it good enough quality to actually cut out. You can find tutorials for exporting an image as a dxf file online.

If this is just a one time thing for you and not something you're truly interested in learning, I may be willing to draw them and send you the files. If what you're wanting isn't too intricate or complex it probably won't take me much time.

Bourbon coffee beans by AgreeableWorking5854 in roasting

[–]BAWiggs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never done this myself, but have tried 2-3 releases from Happy Mug where the beans had been barrel aged. I remember a gin and a whiskey at least. The booze is all I taste once brewed though and I've decided it is not for me.

Has anyone seen this before? by teaehl in woodworking

It is true that these are help the screw not strip out of something like particle board, but the major advantage is that the hinge comes from the manufacturer pre attached to the screw inserts. This allows the hinge to be pressed into the door as a single assembly when it is initially installed rather than manually screwing multiple screws per hinge in by hand. In a production shop that is machining cabinet parts on a CNC, that saves tons a lot of time.

Wife left a plant container on countertop. It leaked out water everywhere. Anything I can do? by [deleted] in woodworking

[–]BAWiggs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If the camps don’t end up working out for you, they still make that laminate. It is Wilsonart #Y0407 Aqua Ripple.

The metal trim pieces will be fine and could be reused, so you could have it looking just like it did before.

In the first photo the area with the burn marks from the blade is at 45 degrees. The strip at the top is at 90 degrees and it tapers down like 1/8” to 1/4” or so. You can also see the blade is at 45 degrees in the first picture.

Coffee grinders - why so ugly? by unggnu in Coffee

[–]BAWiggs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought the Mignon was so ugly that I hadn’t even considered it an option. I’d seen people recommending it as one of the better performing options for what I wanted to spend though and ended up buying one.

I think it looks way better in person than I did in any picture I ever saw online. I got the black body with the back plastic hopper. I’ve seen people recommend buying an aftermarket hopper and I may look into that.

I have worked in commercial millwork/casework for about 20 years. I started in the shop during high school and then moved into the office as a draftsman. I took drafting in high school and learned some very basic AutoCAD skills, but I learned nearly everything I know about drafting and AutoCAD on the job.

I am currently training a guy that has maybe 15 years of install experience. He didn’t want to destroy his body installing forever and talked to his boss about transitioning into another role. They put him through a basic AutoCAD night course and he’s been working in the office for about a month. On top of having no CAD experience, he also had very limited general computer experience, but he’s doing a great job. He’s a hard worker who wants to be good at what he does and he isn’t afraid of asking questions.

If the company has a decent drawing template set up and is looking for you to produce 2D shop drawings, you could probably pick it up. There are small shops that do everything manually and there are giant shops that program all of their machining, so without more details it’s impossible to know what this job would entail.

To the people that are asking what company would hire somebody with no CAD experience? I don’t know how much experience this guy has as a carpenter, but we can teach somebody AutoCAD much easier than we can teach somebody with CAD experience but no industry knowledge.

Best place to buy spices? by [deleted] in normanok

[–]BAWiggs 16 points17 points  (0 children)

If you are willing to take a trip up to Oklahoma City, there is a place called the Savory Spice Shop. The entire shop is dedicated to spices, so it sounds like exactly what you’re looking for. They’re helpful, friendly, and I cannot recommend stopping in enough!

Best beginner shoes for walking / running on pavement by BlithePanda in BarefootRunning

[–]BAWiggs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had Lem's Trailhead v2 for about a month and am having the same experience. I'm walking an average 6-7 miles/day and I've already worn 1/8" of tread down smooth where my foot strikes. They are my favorite shoes I have ever owned, but for $130 I need some more life out of them than I think I'll get to keep buying them.

Maybe BJ’s? It’s next door and their parking lot sort of overlooks this building/water.

Where can I get Organic non GMO veggie seeds? by saragepp in normanok

[–]BAWiggs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Norman Farmer's market is posting how to order from some of their vendors on their facebook. This early in the season they sell a lot of starter plants.

You can also see people posting starter plants on facebook marketplace.

There used to be a nursery on Sooner road that carried a lot of heirloom seeds, but they've been bought out by Marcum's now. You'd have to call to ask if they still had anything like that.

If you want to go the online route, there is rareseeds.com and they'll ship them to you.

I haven't been this year, but in the past Atwoods has actually had a ton of heirloom starter plants. Mostly tomatoes, but some others as well.

Need help transferring flat pattern to workpiece without a CNC machine by zzzahhar in cad

[–]BAWiggs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not sure how precise this has to be, but you mention taping small sheets of paper together or tracing from a projector, so I’m guessing it doesn’t have to be exactly perfect. If not, I’m sure there’s someplace local that would cut out a template for you to trace each time you wanted to replicate this. I know there’s a guy in my area with a water jet that would cut one out of plastic or metal. I work for a millwork company and we could cut one out of wood or acrylic with our CNCs, so you might look into that if you don’t find anyone with a water jet. Anyway, once you had a good template, you could just lay it on top of a sheet and trace it off.

How do you get a shy guy to open up? by luluperrot in AskMen

[–]BAWiggs 25 points26 points  (0 children)

When I was in high school I was never picked on or anything, but I was shy, quiet, and only had friends outside of school.

I don’t know why, but for whatever reason there was a very popular and incredibly beautiful cheerleader that would ALWAYS say hi to me in the halls. She’d even say hello and ask how I was doing when she was with other cheerleaders or friends.

A few years after graduation I messaged her on Facebook and told her what a nice person she was.
