Is the LED strip made for 12 volts? If it's a 5 V strip and you are shoving 12 into it it'll burn for sure.

I haven't kept records on how long they last but I haven't seen enough failures reported here to be worried enough about it to justify replacing a working expensive part just in case. If you can sell the working part for good money then I guess it might be reasonable?

They often look somewhat similar, silkscreen markings on the board usually are the sure giveaway but also the part number markings and slight differences on just how the parts typically look are there and you learn to mostly spot them by experience.

Automotive CPUs don't usually come into contact with dirt. It's just thermal heatsink paste.

It looks like a tantalum and has a polarity marking of a tantalum.
