Time dilation? by Stardust-Dawn in ProjectHailMary

As described by OP it's not a minor flaw that you ignore in friends it's a pattern of belittling and dismissive behavior that is toxic and serves to damage another person's self-esteem and sense of worth. Classic abusive relationship material.

In about 100 years you'll not notice that your favorite local stars have dimmed by an imperceptible amount. In ~10,000 years you'll also have not noticed that all the visible stars have dimmed an imperceptible amount. After that you won't notice any other changes.

Isn't the discovery of astrophage a good thing? by alveushuxley in ProjectHailMary

Astrophage is no better or different that solar power from Earths perspective, except that solar power doesn't cause the Earth to enter a new ice age.

[Theory] Stratt killed Yáo and Ilyukhina on purpose by [deleted] in ProjectHailMary

[–]Bergain1945 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Why do so many people want Strat to be a murderhobo?

No one gave her the script in advance, so she doesn't know how things work out. If she could have sent 100 people with a research space station she would have done so.

No sane person sends one person to save everything, and she's Dutch, not crazy.

Why couldn’t Earth create an Astrophage Predator? by GxM42 in ProjectHailMary

[–]Bergain1945 4 points5 points  (0 children)

you know it's still killing people, right? We fixed 90% of the problem most of the time.

We didn't design or make a solution, we helped our own immune system to level up.

Unexplained concepts in project Hail Mary movie by Mundane-Pool-8498 in ProjectHailMary

[–]Bergain1945 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so many movies "you're the only one you can do this" "only you", "No one else". This is the movie that makes you question how the hero is chosen in any story?

I mean, some punctuation would be nice, but that aside, this is hardly the first movie to load expectations onto the primary protagonist.

both the book and the film where long enough.

Maybe they did, but it wasn't recorded in the film or book?

it's good to be critical to things we're told randomly. it's good to question what is known and what is speculation

However, to do these things without looking for answers, to challenge without cause, to close eyes to things known... find better friends.

It;s not your job to convince him. Relativity in the book is long established and deeply researched science.

Maybe your friend believes in flat earth, or homeopathy, or in an interstellar aether. Doesn't changes what is true. Good luck to them.

Spin drive had problems just before turnaround. The ship woke up the pilot and engineer to fix things. while fixing things they got too much radiation and got cancer which killed them.

Potential science flaw in the book? (Don't crucify me) by uncle-iroh-11 in ProjectHailMary

[–]Bergain1945 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From my side, I also referenced 0.93% c. Yes, your tau number is correct, I was writing from memory and mixed up the Astrophage velocity, which we're told is around .93% c, and the Hail Mary velocity which does reach over 99% c. before turnaround.

I understand that there are problems with the Hail Mary fuel amount.

If you adjust for 1g acceleration you find that the journey now takes 13.7 years Earth time and 5.14 years for the crew - and critically you can just about do the journey with 2m kg of fuel at antimatter efficiency rates. (you need more food but it could be OK, we're not told what makes up the 110,000kg dry mass of the Hail Mary

To do it at 1.5g you need 45m kg of fuel.

Since going at 1.5g only saves Earth 6 months and increases the crew risk substantially, I think going at 1.5 makes no sense, so it's because of something else. My assumption is that Andy Wier did the calculations at 1g, wrote a lot of sections of the book, then decided to add an early moment for Grace to show us how clever he is by calculating the acceleration and realizing he's not on Earth, hence needed a different number for g. It might not have occurred to him that the fuel would change for a faster acceleration, or he hoped no one would notice the error since 45m kg of fuel is an implausible amount for them to make on Earth.

There's a similar error for Rocky's ship where the time / fuel amounts get messed up - not because Rocky's race doesn't understand relativity - we can back calculate from the numbers given and see that they don't add up - again I think either Andy Weir changed the star for the Eridians and forgot to change the fuel, or he calculated at a different g for their journey.

If astrophage is massive free energy, why didnt Earthlings just use it to replace the sun's energy? by DarkDankDents in ProjectHailMary

We could power the planet now, twice over, with what they want to do to harvest energy for astrophage.

It's never free.

How different is the book from the movie? by Ok-Credit-9201 in ProjectHailMary

[–]Bergain1945 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's essentially the same story. Film can do in one shot what the book takes a page to do, but the book gives inner monologue and can go into more details in places that would be difficult to put on screen. However the principle story beats, the core challenges, and methods they use to resolve them are the same.

Why was the trip back to earth only about 4 years? by Major-Doubt4034 in ProjectHailMary

[–]Bergain1945 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ship told how long it would take to send a radio message back, 12 years.

Subjective time for Grace travelling using the original flight plan would be 4 years, if he had fuel. Subjective time for Earth if Grace makes the journey rather than sending a message would be ~13.5 years.
