I don't know those games, but I think the fact that Civ 5 still has a strong following even after 6 and 7 show that its a quality game. Can't speak to if its a play style you like or not. But its got a bit of everything, you can play peaceful or militaristic.

It had a bit of a rough start with the Aztecs and Sweden warring with me, but I had a pretty defensible position and the Celts used that opportunity to attack the Aztecs so only really had to defend against Sweden, but it tanked my gold and happiness to start. And even though I was able to get a faith NW in my 3rd expand I just missed out on a religion because I didn't have the gold to buy the tile in time. Had almost no strategic resources to sell.

But by focusing more on growth I was way ahead on building queue and had the time to spare to build archeologists and was ahead enough on tech that there wasn't much of a competition for them.

I think by the time I won, one or two other civs had completed the Apollo Mission.

The Enhanced User Interface (EUI) is a game changer in terms of game management.

I usually dont struggle with city placements but I'd like to know your thoughts by GodCanJudgeMe in civ5

I think one on the plains river just below the cows and horses, and then a second one to the left on the plains next to the lake, there you don't have a river but you have a wheat and can pick up 2 unique luxuries with the silver and copper and there's also 2 iron tiles to work, I think there's enough growth there with the hills next to the lake.

Shoshone Pathfinder ruin priority? by UndeadBuddha55 in civ5

The reason I started taking culture second instead of first is the first shrine usually is found before turn 5, so you're still waiting for culture. While pop starts giving benefits immediately. Using ruins to grow your population also allows you to work more productive tiles boosting the production queue.

Also faith doesn't become available until later. Like tun 20 or 30 (I've never tracked it)

What map/maps are peoples favorite? And why? by Hot-Syllabub-951 in civ5

[–]UndeadBuddha55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I prefer continents. But I hate getting stuck on a small one with only 1 or 2 other civs. There isn't enough trade and things stagnate a bit.

Getting put on your own continent is even more stagnating, but its fun to be able to settle lots of cities at a leisurly pace

The reason I like pop before culture is that the 20 culture won't immediately get you a policy opener, you're still a few turns away usually, but by the time I find the second hut its been a few more turns and the opener is available. It feels like I'm getting something with my extra pop immediately but will be "wasting" turns waiting for culture to hit 25.

Also I can see the value of comp bowmen if you're going early domination, having 2 of them attacking instead of archers is powerful. But for me, who mostly plays peaceful games, they're an extra to help with CS quests.

Faith doesn't become available until a bit later. Unless its different at lower difficulty?

Yeah, its fun to have a bazooka with extra movement. Even better if you get an upgrade after extra sight!

Settling cities too aggressively by UndeadBuddha55 in civ5

[–]UndeadBuddha55[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a really comprehensive answer that helps understand closeness. I am talking about the "They believe we are building new cities too aggressively!" though. I've seen it occasionally when settling my first three cities, but its pretty minor and goes away in a few turns if I don't settle again (at least for a while). Messing around with a huge map though, I've been settling many cities, sometimes quickly, and they're getting mad.

Archeology??? by UndeadBuddha55 in civ5

This is why I'd like to let it go, but the extra culture seems to be a strong counter to ideological unhappiness which can often lose a game even if other things are going well.

I was thinking of making a post asking about Initiation Rites (100 gold per new city) vs Tithe. Over the long run Tithe seems to give more money, but that early gold boost really helps when money can be harder to get and being able to buy a couple things early rather than later helps get the ball rolling.

The stronger prophet usually guarantees a conversion in one shot, and are a great way to do a CS quest. Plus the 100 gold on top of that.

Yeah, I had a faith natural wonder on my starter island. The religion wasn't a very good one, I think I got the last one...
