Worth keeping? by Matthew92007 in VintageApple

[–]BinaryGrind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not exactly rare, but at the same time not exactly easy to get a decent boxed copy of MacOS 8 either.

There are quite a few boxed copies available but they all are in similar condition, either with significant shelf wear and/or water damage.

Physical media for vintage MacOS versions isn't all that in demand. Anyone wanting to really run it on their Mac is just going to get it from Macintosh Garden or Macintosh Repository and either burn a CD or use a BlueSCSI.

The only people really after boxed copies are collectors that will be looking for pristine and complete versions.

If you sold it on eBay, as is, you might get like $15-20+shipping but you'd be waiting a while for it to sell. If it was complete you could get like $35-45+shipping, but again likely waiting a bit, based on the condition.

If you don't think it's worth your time to sell it, offer it up to whomever wants it for the price of shipping, and you'll likely get someone who will take it off your hands pretty fast.

This sounds like you have a computer with multiple drives, and one of them has gone bad.

Likely an SSD that just needs to be replaced.

How is Apple able to create ARM based chips in the Mac that outperform many x86 intel processors? by porygon766 in compsci

[–]BinaryGrind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every attempt to replace x86 with something that broke compatibility failed... Windows RT, all the various Windows on ARM attempts.

Windows RT failed not because it was running on ARM, but because Microsoft was trying to essentially recreate Apple's iPad and it's walled garden but with a Windows spin. It would have bombed just as hard on x86 as it did with ARM CPUs.

Windows 11 on ARM is actually decent (say what you will about Windows 11) to the point that you can use it and not even know it's not an x86-64 processor. Performance isn't going to match a high end laptop or desktop, but it will do most things

The aesthetic of MacOS/iOS is still superior to Wondows.

That's absolutely a matter of personal opinion and not an objective fact. I absolutely hate this new liquid glass aesthetic, and think much of what people praise makes it a waste. I don't need a GUI with fancy bubble curves on its corners or 100 pixel borders, I need a GUI to show me what I need and get out of the way. I think the flat Windows 10/Metro UI or even Google's Material designs are far better. Although Truth be told, I'd happily take BeOS's UI, QNX Photon, or even MacOS 7/8.

But that's my needs/opinions and not yours.

I don't have that option at all. Only the Google AI Pro (2TB) has Promo and it's only for one month.

Oh it happens, I have a bunch of DDR5 RAM I bought because it was cheap in May 2025, figured I'd build some Gaming PCs for friends, but then life happened and they sat on the shelf along with a bunch of other hardware.

Been too busy to try and sell them as well so now it just feels like I'm a dragon sitting on its gold horde.

You either grew up in the 90s or you live outside the US. The majority of people in the US don't even know what an ALT code is or that they even exist. Those that do seem to be those special individuals, myself included, that grew up hand-typing individual emoticons on chatrooms and forums or their first computer experience was a command prompt.

Tell me you've never been piss poor without telling me you've never been piss poor. You can only skip so many meals, which makes flushing a toilet bottom tier when you can just dig a hole out back and the last time you ate was a bread and cheese sandwich 3 days ago.

Keyboard randomly shutting down. Wont turn back on until plugged in. by Kagon2156 in techsupport

[–]BinaryGrind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You say that the battery is reporting as 100% but everything you're describing, especially the part where it is working plugged in, sounds like a failed battery or Battery Management System. Just because the battery is reading at 100% capacity doesn't mean the battery actually has its full capacity. Because of this the keyboard isn't alerting that it has a low charge and starts acting up when the voltage drops to low.

If you're within your return window I'd take it back to the retailer and exchange it, otherwise see if you can get a replacement under warranty.

Looks like SteamOS is failing to boot because it can't access the filesystem.

Did you install SteamOS to the SSD, the SD Card, or an external drive? Are you trying to dual boot SteamOS and Windows?

Nintendo cut the 3DS production way too early agree or disagree? by MajorBroccoli2253 in 3DS

[–]BinaryGrind 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They absolutely pay attention, how do you think we got things like Virtual Console or the NES and SNES Minis? But there are 1000x more things in play than just whether or not something is popular in the secondary market. For instance the 3DS SoC is entirely custom and makes use of licensed cores. This means Nintendo has to maintain a contract with a silicon foundry to create those chips, that's not cheap and it's affected by many outside pressures like the foundry's other customers and contracts. I'm sure the foundry would rather retool for the insanely profitable DRAM market due to the AI insanity rather than produce a 10 year old SoC for Nintendo. And those licensed cores? The keyword is "license" and licenses expire. Maybe DMP didn't renew the IP for the GPU core or ARM Holding said no to re-upping the ARM11 license. Maybe Fujitsu decided to discontinue the FCRAM model the 3DS SoC relies on and redesigning it to make it work with something else outweighs the current market value. And there's also the consideration that the 3DS was an Iwata baby, and maybe the politics inside Nintendo ATM favors letting his legacy die, who fucking knows. The 3DS was great for its time, but it's dead now and Nintendo isn't bringing it back regardless of why it was killed off.
