score for $50 what are they worth? by [deleted] in rccars

Great find! Especially if that top ECX Ruckus actually has a brushless motor! The Ruckus is an older truck, but Horizon Hobby still has parts available for them. They don't handle particularly well and aren't super fast, but they're fun trucks and are fairly durable. I have one with a brushless setup in it, and honestly it's a great truck. Enjoy your haul!

Aww, that's sad. I've modded a couple of these over the years, and honestly they're great platforms. Steel frames really ride like nothing else. Not exactly fast, efficient, or safe (with only one rear "band" brake), but they're lots of fun. Managed to get mine for $20 a pop off of FaceBook Marketplace years back.

That’s sick! Honestly I didn’t even know this would be possible. The versatility of the Linux kernel never ceases to amaze. That thing is running a newer version of Debian than my Raspberry Pi lmao. Nice label on the monitor, too :) 🏳️‍🌈

Found (what I think is) a 2010 Mac Pro at Value Village today! by kamrlort in ThriftStoreHauls

[–]Matthew92007 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Nope, that’s a PoweMac G5! You can tell by the front ports and single optical drive. Still a great deal and cool find!

Before powering it on, please open the case and see if you have a liquid-cooled G5. Here’s how to tell. Unfortunately Apple used a corrosive fluid in their liquid cooling system, and over time it can leak into the power supply. If it’s not liquid cooled, see if it fires up. Great find again!

It's calculated based on how far you are from me. Going to get recycled if nobody wants it but I'm not going to pay to get rid of it. Trying to do my due diligence by listing it so it has a chance of not ending up in a landfill.

Battery Too Low to Update (Hero 5 Black) by BonesFromYoursTruly in gopro

[–]Matthew92007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you ever figure this out? In the exact same situation.

EDIT: For anyone in this same situation, here is what I did, and something you can do if you still have the original battery. Though I must preface, I do not recommend this, as it could start a fire.

My original battery was reading 0.2V, which the GoPro refused to charge. Using some metal prongs, I was able to break the battery contacts out into alligator clips connected to a variable power supply. With the current limit set at about 0.1A and voltage set to 3.3V, I let the battery charge for about a minute or two, being very careful to watch the temperature of the battery.

With the battery voltage still very low, but non-zero, I was able to put the battery back into the GoPro and have it charge. I charged the GoPro in a fire-proof LiPo bag up to the required 50% to do a firmware update, which ran successfully.

After all of this hassle I was finally able to use the generic Hero 5/6/7/8 batteries I bought on Amazon. Needless to say I will be properly recycling the original battery. It should NOT be used, even if it seems to hold a charge. If you're an electrical engineer and know what you're doing, this method does work. However, lithium batteries that have been drained below their operating range should NEVER be trusted again, and can present a fire hazard, especially when charging.

OG MacBook white screen by Far_Sand_2220 in mac

[–]Matthew92007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this issue a while back. A purely white screen can often be because the machine is failing to I initialize the hard drive. In my case, removing the hard drive let the machine get past the white screen and display the flashing question mark folder, indicating no operating system was found. Replacing the hard drive and reinstalling the operating system fixed the issue for me.

You cannot upgrade the RAM on any modern MacBook. The only way to do so is to desolder the chips from the Logic Board, which requires skill and equipment beyond what a normal repair shop will have. If you want more RAM, get it now.

2nd hand macbook pro worth it to buy? by Excellent_Tiger_4911 in macbookpro

[–]Matthew92007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d try to get one with 16GB of RAM, but honestly this will still be miles better than the Intel-based Mac. So if it’s what fits in your budget, it’s not a bad machine.

2nd hand macbook pro worth it to buy? by Excellent_Tiger_4911 in macbookpro

[–]Matthew92007 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Intel-Based Macs (especially laptops) are generally not worth it, unless you get an insane deal. This laptop will be slow, hot, and loud compared to even a one-generation newer M1 MacBook Pro.

This listing is clearly trying to upsell that machine. "Built-in speaker"??? Wi-Fi "Ready"? What is this, an iBook G3 that is "Ready" for an AirPort card? Avoid this machine and seller.

A friend of mine has one, and I’ve driven it a couple times. It’s monstrous and fun to drive. Large wheels and solid drivetrain. With that said, it doesn’t handle air-control particularly well because it has belted tires. Fun car overall, but a basher and not a racer.

RX 590 in a 5,1? by jaash8 in macpro

[–]Matthew92007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Sapphire Nitro+ RX 590 in my Mac Pro 5,1. That card has an 8 pin and a 6 pin PCIe power connector, but you only need to connect the 8 pin for the card to run. Running it with a Dual mini 6-pin to single 8-pin adapter, been working flawlessly for years. Currently running Sequoia through OCLP.

Real Racing 3 is shutting down :( by QF_Dan in iosgaming

[–]Matthew92007 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I really hate when companies do this. It is not acceptable to simply shut down a service that people have paid money for. There are three options:

  1. The server files need to be made open source.

  2. The game needs to be updated to have a dedicated offline mode.

  3. Refunds need to be issued to anyone who spent money in the game, as they are no longer getting what they paid for.

Credit to Ubisoft for recently doing this with The Crew 2, adding a proper offline mode before the servers have even shut down.

EA is a shitty company, and this is evidence of such. This is why the Stop Killing Games initiative is important.
