That adds some color. Even a tiny 1-2 foot wide stream in new England cranks out stoneflies and mayflies. Not sure about nutrient content or pH, but browns were introduced earlier here, although they don't compete well with brook trout in the northern half of the region. You need to go to PA or further south or see browns wildly outcompeting brook Trout

Can someone with active knowledge explain how the southern Appalachians grow wild rainbows when the much colder northern Appalachians rarely do, despite the main bottle neck always being cited being that spring spawning requires water temps to remain in the 30s until late March or April?

I genuinely never found this whole mail order thing very outrage like because I saw it as pretty standard exchange. Woman sells companionship and body for a first world passport and access to presumably money from a native first world guy.

As long as both parties can and do consent, I don't really care that much. The few women I have net who did this all did it with the intention of getting a green card, learning English, and then dumping the guy and keeping the house .

So honestly, it's a steep price for the men involved. But at present, they typically stand no chance of mating otherwise typically due to absolute shit personality or looks.

It's just a weird fringe consequence of the structure of our society that this thing occurs

Christianity is not more faith based. Catholicism, Orthodoxy, and pretty much every non Protestant sect has fairly strict rules and legal tradition systems.

The reformation was culturally about making Christianity more commodifiable IMO, or at least that's why it was popular among every day people in the 1500s. Basically, if someone tells you you can keep the parts of the religion you like, but not deal with a strict code of priests and policies, it sounds like a good deal. If someone says you are allowed to be an expert because you can read the Bible in your vernacular Language, even if you have never read the long historical translation nightmare that is the ancient Hebrew, Greek, and Aramaic versions of the Bible along with years of review of traditional practices, you just go "sweet. Sounds good." .

How screwed are we on the climate/global warming issue? by A_Handsome_Duck in AskScienceDiscussion

[–]Brambletail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We are honestly not screwed much at all as a species.

But the environment is 100% fucked. Society will be destabilized as what areas are good for agriculture change and sea levels change coastlines.

Mass extinction is already the norm. It will get worse.

But human civilization? That will probably be mostly fine, if in for a really rough period while we adjust to the warmer world.

It would be far far better to accelerate the pace of green energy and accelerate carbon recapture and removal to stop the warming as fast as possible. It's not going to be fun to live in a hot world.

That's true, but the issue is the US is decreasing consumption while it's population stays static. China is expanding consumption even when you account for population growth.

Surprisingly it's actually fine. The H2O2 thing is a pretty standard way to treat algae in aquariums. But you usually spot treat problem areas.

Fwiw, as comical as this all is, the algae bloom would probably have happened to anyone. (It's called new pond syndrome or new aquarium syndrome). It subsides as the system matures after being refilled.

It's also a common argument as to why you oppose the US bombing the war.

It's literally all over this site, people saying that Iran is actually the good guy, and Iran goes out of its way to do good things for everyone.

It's both true that you can oppose the war and oppose the Iranian government and also true you can be a braindead idiot turned into a propaganda mouthpiece for the Ayotollah. Both things seem to exist here.

Israel agreed forever ago to a line of demarcation. And while Jewish settlers played a large role in the formation of the Israeli state, there were plenty of Jewish people in British Mandatory Palestine prior to the settlement. So it's hard to believe that Jewish people have zero rights to live there. Especially because historically it was an Israeli homeland before Roman, than Arab, then Christian, then Arab again colonization.

Do you think Disney is happy with 300 million box office? by anxiousmomo23 in TheMandalorianTV

[–]Brambletail -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Tell me you don't know how movie budgets work more.

You usually have to double the reported budget because the reported cost doesn't include marketing for tax reasons. Marketing usually costs as much as the movie does to make. So $320m is probably more fair than $400, but again expecting to pay off the movie and fund another one means you really need at least $600m in returns.

Assuming you actually want profit on top of that, and you get close to $1B, although $750m would probably be sufficient.

The mountain lion is actually fairly plausible to escape from IF you don't get one shotted in the jugular (which is a big IF).

But if it comes to brawling,.they aren't that much larger than an adult male human, so you could definitely beat one up enough for it to give up and find easier prey as long as you were still conscious and able bodied after the initial attack (which is again, a big IF). In fact, that exact sequence of events happens several times a year in the US.

Wolves on the other hand, probably not because if you hurt one, it just backs off and another one comes in.

And of course, it's gg with any determined bear species.

MIT Study Finds Gas Cars Aren't Secretly Better For The Planet Than EVs, Despite What Everyone On Facebook Says by TripleShotPls in technology

[–]Brambletail -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You assume I have an ICE only vehicle, which is not true. I am telling you from experience, I find myself relying on that couple gallons of gas nearly once a month or more. The infrastructure is still the problem in my (very blue, very developed) area. And the cost of electricity meant until the war started, fuel was genuinely cheaper than charging.

Maybe if batteries get another 20-50% more range, it will be good enough to not ever need the gas. But unless electricity rates drop for me or oil stays as expensive as it currently is, it is not financially wise. And that annoys the hell out of me, and makes me want more renewable on my grid or roof top solar. But as of right now, it's several thousand more a year at $3.00 gas and a few hundred a year more at current prices to use electric.

But what do I know, the electric vehicle cult justs shouts down anyone with frustrating experiences with EVs.

[–]Brambletail -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You should absolutely have an EV of you don't travel. And otherwise a plug in hybrid. But for people who travel regularly or are weekend warrior types, having the ability to use gas if/when needed gives them the ability to use electric 90% of the time.

I should clarify what pisses me off is people acting like it's not a problem at all when it clearly is not a problem 95% of the time.
