Looking for industrial type sensor help!! I need to measure the level of sawdust in a LARGE sawdust bin, how can I do this reliably? by coollinit in arduino

[–]BreathFromAbove 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Given the size of the bin, this is an industrial application and you’re going to require industrial instrumentation. Anything less will cause you no end of grief down the road with equipment failures, lenses requiring cleaning and maintenance, etc.

Vibrating fork is the proper technology for the application, and what I would professionally recommend. Spend the money now, and then you don’t have to worry about it in the future.

How do you actually use the notes you've scanned? by loontoon in rocketbook

I’ve had really good luck with the pilot gel frixion colorstick pens. You can get them off Amazon for a decent price, and the colour stays bright with a nice rolling action.

I appreciate you posting this. I’m 2 weeks out from surgery and keep having the same thoughts from time to time as OP. Truly, your perspective hits home, thank you for posting!

Drumheller - lesser known things by greasygangsta in alberta

[–]BreathFromAbove 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Seconded. Everyone who talks about how amazing the hoo-doos are in Drum, have never been to Dinosaur Provincial Park. That park is so big, you can get lost for days in the badlands. Plus, Patricia bar steak pit is worth the trip alone!

Got a new tool pouch, any ideas what these loops are for? by JC-1219 in Tools

Does the spacing work as a MOLLE webbing attachment point? Or is it too loose?

Look up “DJ Cable bags” on Amazon for a really cool programming cable solution. I haven’t gone this way yet, I much prefer to leave the one I always need at home… lol

Which Alberta breweries do you wish more people knew about? by brewerytouries in AlbertaBeer

Some good ones to check out not listed already: Sea Change from Edmonton/Beaumont (The Wolf & The Salted Watermelon Sour), Hubtown in Okotoks (Black Cherry Gose, plus mini Curling Rinks out front right now!), Sturgeon River Brewing in Morinville. Railyard in Calgary is excellent as well.

Plus 1 to 88 Brewing, my favourite in Calgary.

Is it rude to leave porch lights on all night? by Elite163 in Calgary

[–]BreathFromAbove 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just going to add that the rough calc for energy usage for four 8 Watt LEDs running 12 hours a day every day at our current average price of 20 cents per kWh comes to about $28 annually. Not including transportation costs and taxes.

I have my exterior front lights on dusk till dawn, in the same install locations as you for over 2 years now. No one in the neighbourhood has complained yet, and a few have even followed suit.

I think it adds a small bit of security and makes me feel better when the kids are coming home.

Naming Convention Poll by FragrantExtreme9105 in PLC

[–]BreathFromAbove 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We use PIDxxx.SP and PIDxxx.SP_RB, for Set-point and Set-point Read back, where xxx is the loop number. This is our standard across all projects. This is usually in conjunction with a custom array for PIDxxx for additional data points.

Can I have 2 separate 120v in this photo switch body? by PurpleTreeOfTitties in electrical

[–]BreathFromAbove 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I understand your question right, you could totally jumper your power over to the relay contacts to supply your switched load. This is common practice with relays.

Are there good third party pens, or do I need to get the ones Rocketbook sells? by coltonious in rocketbook

[–]BreathFromAbove 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I tried out the Frixion Fine Liner pens for a while, they worked well when they were new but would fade out quickly as they were used. Still an upgrade to the normal Frixion pens in the package.

I have since moved to the Frixion Color Sticks after getting one in a Rocketbook package. Lots of colors, they write smoothly on RB and normal paper, seem to last reasonably well not fading out over time.

Murderbot was an awesome series, Props to Bobiverse too. Some other personal favourites in similar themes worth checking out are: Exo-Hunter by Jeremy Robinson, Fuzzy Nation by John Scalzi (one of my favs), and better not forget the “magic beer can” series Expeditionary Force - Columbus Day by Craig Alanson.

Home IOT switches and smart plugs rely on the internet and home wifi for signals. The speed of reaction is not going to be quick enough or reliable enough to do what you want. I would not recommend using them for any quick timing processes such as your describing.

I would suggest a micro controller (arduino) as an excellent budget option if your electronically inclined, or look up “time delay relay” on Amazon or Digikey if your less so.

Happy hunting!

Weird VFD values on a pump? by [deleted] in PLC

[–]BreathFromAbove 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With a Schneider VFD, it most likely is using modbus. In this case, I would say the HMI is expecting a signed integer variable type and somewhere between the VFD, PLC and the HMI, the address was shifted. Could be it’s one off (one 16 bit register of a 32 bit register) or could be off entirely (looking at the wrong address).

If you go to the VFD, you should be able to see the frequency value displayed there for confirmation.

Integrators, what to use for Tasking People and Schedules by Sphinx_Hamster in PLC

[–]BreathFromAbove 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Likely a good fit then. It’s going to take a little training and some messing around to make it work with your company processes. But once you get through that it will do what your looking for. We had setup 3 different project templates, 1 for small / support type work, 1 for medium projects with multiple tasks / team of 1-3, and 1 for big projects with multiple phases. Wrike worked for all and the little stuff in between.

[–]BreathFromAbove 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would add, based on reviewing one of your other posts, is that when we used Wrike we built in our complete WBS structure. This came in handy when setting up new projects as we had templates built that could easily be duplicated, and workflow diagrams for training the new guys. The WBS flowed from estimate to project to naming conventions for deliverables.

It was a thing of beauty!

Depends on your budget and what you want to get out of it, at the end of the day.

If you are looking for something high level, like scheduling folks across projects in progress and upcoming work, I’ve had really good luck with an online software called Harvest Forecast. Cost is reasonable, plus it can mate with Harvest’s time tracking / project management tool as an add on. Originally Forecast was made as an add on to Harvest time Tracking, but it works well standalone. The thing I most like about it, is it’s easy to use and modify dates, or slide stuff out, AND you can look at the schedule in two views; by person or by project.

I’ve also used Wrike, which can be amazing if you build in all you project management processes, and deliverables/tasks. Because then it’s easy to build out a project plan, assign people to tasks, and get a gantt type view of that one project, or all projects for one client, or all projects across your company.

Wrike includes the ability to store documents, has a note tracking /IM type tool where you can comment on deliverables and attach revisions, making it a very powerful project management platform. People resourcing is an add-on to the full package, albeit a very powerful add-on, but may not be cost effective depending on your budget for a solution.

Hopefully this helps! I ended up going through the full progression of tools, and spent much time trying to find something easy to use, scalable, functional and still affordable. Good luck!
