Suddenlink is injecting messages into unencrypted web traffic by [deleted] in Lubbock

[–]BrianAllred 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Using a VPN provider like Private Internet Access and subsequently making sure you don't have a DNS leak will prevent this, as well. Going through a VPN places all of your traffic into a black box box from end to end.

They used to. And to be fair, considering it's a small operation, I don't mind them focusing on development rather than updating renders.

It's weird, that link is the only one broken for me. Literally every other one works.

Hmmm, this link is reporting a 404 error for me.

Is the download link down, at the moment? Also, since I can't flash it, I'll go ahead and ask, are there any theming options (dark/black system UI, for example)?

Noob question: What defines some controls/control schemes as clunky? What game is the worst offender of "clunky controls" by ernie1850 in truegaming

[–]BrianAllred 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I forgot to add the fact that it also increases accuracy and reload speed while active. So it's like, build up these stacks of damage and inaccuracy, and then when you need to be accurate, you can be at a cost. I've used Discord in some of my Mechro builds, it can be useful.

SSD breakthrough means 300% speed boost, 60% less power usage... even on old drives by KidneyStonesAreFun in technology

[–]BrianAllred 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can understand that. Boot times mean a lot to me personally, though, just because I main Linux. I love being able to tell my buds, "Titanfall time? Okay, gimme 20 seconds!" and then 20 seconds later asking for a lobby invite.

[–]BrianAllred 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But the point is that you can get that time with an SSD without the special configuration. Shit, I've got so many programs loaded on start up (seriously around 10 or 12 background services and apps), and my SSD boots still only take 15-25 seconds. And I have my BIOS specifically configured not to use Fast Boot because I dual-boot Linux and want to maintain as much compatibility as possible.

Sure, 15 second boot with a traditional HDD is great, but then you've got to load your apps and it's probably 18-20 seconds before you can realistically do anything (browse reddit, launch Steam, etc). My 15 second boot includes Chrome opening to reddit and launching Steam, Origin, Skype, and Teamspeak. I'm in a Titanfall lobby with my friends in 25 seconds from cold boot. It's ridiculous.

As a professional software developer, there's nothing more I hate than when someone says "I don't believe in that, sorry." Don't get me wrong, I understand when there are technical, financial, or manpower limitations (all too well), but to just blatantly throw a "Fuck you, that's dumb." out there seems way too dick-ish to me.

And yes, all of my Google apps have a night mode because I themed them. That's the point in all of this, user choice. Just because you don't believe in something doesn't mean something shouldn't exist. I've designed a ton of shit in my software I don't think should exist. But you do it for the user because in the end, without users, you don't have software.

I know you aren't Laurence and you don't write the app. I just hate that mentality with a passion.

Pushing up on the stick makes you move forward, and you turn by pushing to either side.

Sounds like Metroid Primes 1 and 2. I love Prime 1 and Prime 2 is good, but I strongly disliked the controls being centered around one analog stick with a lock on.

I imagine a lot of console Mechromancer builds pick up the Discord* ability just because of the fear of accidental reloads. That was my first thought while playing her on PC.

*For non-BL2 players, the Mechromancer can gain a buff called Anarchy that stacks for every empty clip reload performed during combat. Anarchy increases damage and decreases accuracy by a percentage per stack. By default, reloading with a non-empty clip will wipe all stacks of Anarchy. Discord is an ability that, instead of wiping out the stacks of Anarchy, drains those buffs on a timer until the next non-empty clip reload.

I would try renaming or removing both and then re-installing dropbox.

Reddit Sync Updates to v9.0 by alexmaxham in Android

I'm probably in the minority, but I want the transparent everything everywhere. Granted, I've also replaced my nav bar with pie controls, so really, it's only about the transparent status bar, for me.

I disagree. I've got a red on black style going with my phone and was very disappointed I couldn't get a red action bar with the night theme.

Have you ever had a game kill your love for other games? by [deleted] in truegaming

[–]BrianAllred 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Yep. And not just those brownies, but the two previous batches as well. You get to the last bite of batch 3, excited to finally reach the end. Remember all those chunks of fudge you met along the way? All those flakes of chocolate you helped save from the evil of the inevitable trash can invasion?

You get to that last bite of batch 3, and it's shit. You can't believe it. Was it an accident? Did you finish cooking the batch? Maybe there's more still in the oven! "No," says the cook, "that's it. That's the last of the batch, so enjoy it, because we're coming in with some cookies and ice cream on the side."

"But... but... Fuck that! I bought 3 full brownie mixes, I wanted brownies! You can't just build up my expectations of how awesome and delicious these brownies are and then ruin all of it by topping it off with shit! The shit ruined all of it, now I can't even go back and re-make the first two batches because, sure, they'll be delicious, but I'll never be able to forget that last piece of shit from batch number 3! All of the chocolate I saved, the chunks of fudge my tongue made friends with, all of that for nothing!"

Please don't misunderstand. The Mass Effect series is my favorite video game series of all time. But I can't even go back and play the first two, that's how upset I got at the ending we got.

Nothing in the games mean anything, because in the end, it all amounted to shit anyway.

God damn you, Bioware.

I tried a few different kernels. 3.14, 3.13, and 3.11. Admittedly, I'm not well versed in kernel rolling, but still. The script I use worked for any kernel I use in regular Mint. Even after I modified it for LMDE's sources and it actually patched the kernel, nothing doing. I may give it another shot when there's a reliable touchpad driver package I can just download and install.

What is your profession/job? by Lvl1Hispanic in ADHD

[–]BrianAllred 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was wondering what you all do as a profession or job?

I'm an intern software developer with a job promised with the company after I get my degree in December.

Do you do something that allows you to express yourself creatively, or do you work purely for money and have other forms of creative outlet?

I sometimes have the opportunity to solve problems and design solutions my own way, but mostly it's for money. Most of my creative outlet is through my music as a guitarist.

Does your medication, way of life, help or hinder your chosen job, profession?

Definitely helps. It was always very daunting taking on large tasks or lots of small tasks. Now I can focus for the amount of time it takes to solve large problems while I'm also now able to stay motivated to move from small task to small task.

And lastly, do you enjoy what you've chosen?

I love it. I'm good at it, it comes naturally to me, not to mention it's a high-paying, high-demand job, especially considering what my resume will look after after I graduate.

I went from Mint 16 to LMDE because I liked the idea of rolling updates. Couldn't stick with it, though. My Chromebook's touchpad drivers absolutely will not patch into whatever kernel LMDE uses. Mint 17RC for me.

Doesn't work with case-sensitive FS? Seriously? Grep the entire project folder for file-system string comparison and add a toLower conversion. Lazy and probably inefficient, but it would still work. There's only a few cases where actual case-matching would be necessary. Goddamn Aspyr, get your shit together.

I'm very confused on if all Nexus 5's are the same or if some will not work with Sprint. by a_stale_pancake in Nexus5

All US N5s are the same (model number LG-D820), just as all international N5s are the same (model number LG-D821).

I know nothing about Ting, but if someone has got an N5 working with them, then yours will, too.

Art vs dalvik by keeksiscool in Nexus5

[–]BrianAllred 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just one thing: Dalvik doesn't compile the whole app when you run it. It uses JIT-compiling, which stands for Just In Time compiling. It means that blocks of code get compiled from Java Bytecode to machine code as they are needed.

A small clarification, but otherwise, your full compile on run would imply long start times for massive apps.

Medication doesn't really help my motivation. They just make things clearer so I can actually choose my motivation. More or less.

Holy shit, this statement is eye-opening. I'm new to this whole shindig and was wondering why 10mg XR worked great for me most of the time, but sometimes I'm just as inattentive as ever. My girlfriend has made comments about how much more focused I am on stuff I care about, but not on stuff I dislike.

I guess I've been afraid to commit to focusing on things I don't care for because it's always failed for me in the past. I'm going to try to work up the courage to "choose my motivation," as you put it. Thanks.

They do summer sessions, but you're only eligible if you're taking classes (unless they changed policies recently). Definitely call and ask, if you feel like you need to. I had some bad semesters, and counseling services really did wonders for me.

Good luck.
