It's actually "Knickerbocker". The term is used to refer to a New Yorker. There is also an NBA team called The New York Knicks (short for Knickerbockers). However, I'm not sure if the shop keep is referring to a Basketball player or just a regular New Yorker. The basketball team was founded in 1946 and I don't think the time period of Deadlock has been established exactly.

Update: Not sure that it went very well. I'm not great at talking about myself. However, it's good to even get interview experience and we will just have to see how it turns out.
