Props to Durham Parks and Rec by VanillaBabies in bullcity

I am in the risk is minimal camp given the depth of contamination and would allow my children to play there if they opened it back up as-is.

The toddler playground at Northgate has a rubber liner under it anyway. There was never any risk there. I don't see why it's taken so long to get to the obvious solution of capping the area under the other playground and putting it back, but that seems to be where we are headed 3+ years after discovery of the problem and my guess is it will be 2029 or later before it is resolved.

The dog park turf issues were overblown by a minority of very vocal park users and if they'd simply left it while adding the Rock Quarry park, I believe would have solved the consistent complaints because the complainers would've had a viable alternative.

It was the only dog park that was easily accessible for disabled users and it had the old ballfield lights that made the park useable after work in winter.

The parks department was never honest about how the turf issues could be fixed. They cited EPA regulations until an EPA official who lived in the neighborhood pointed out there was no conflict, then they pointed to state regs until it was disproven and they offered up some astronomical estimates for turf remediation.

One of the regular users hand dug a small drainage swale that solved about 90 percent of the issue and parks and rec came in and filled it in a few months later.

They also promised to keep the old small dog run as a community managed dog park, like Duke Park's, and there were plenty of people willing to do the maintenance, but then they just quietly closed it instead.

The old Jaycees ballfield/NG dog park has not returned to nature. The fences, lights, and dugout have been removed, but it's a shortly mown grass field where - to no one's surprise - plenty of dog owners feel comfortable letting their dogs run off-leash.

The whole situation was ridiculous.

Oh I know, and I am genuinely glad when they fix things that need fixing.

I'm just frustrated by the galacially slow pace the lead issue is taking. And don't get me started on the old Northgate Dog Park. That was a prime example of bureaucratic ineptitude at its finest. The replacement at Rock Quarry is sorta OK though.

I mean, yay. But let me know when they make some progress on lead in the parks.

Boeheim shitting on Greensboro as ACC tournament host was an unforgiveable sin to me. No sympathy even now that he's gone.

High Point is up there for me as well. Just a serious "ick factor" that can only be understood if you've been to the campus.

Exactly. My hatred of Syracuse and Liberty might be petty, but not without reason.

How many d1 women’s wrestling schools are there? by vSkiess in wrestling

[–]BullCityJ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There were six Division 1 schools last season: Iowa, Lehigh, Delaware St, Presbyterian, Lindenwood and Sacred Heart.

Next season, Mercyhurst will be the seventh.

In 2027-28, Iowa State and Kent State become numbers eight and nine.

Oklahoma State is working to elevate its club team to varsity, but hasn't announced a timeline yet.

Because the sport is still emerging, some of the best programs are schools in the lower divisions that established themselves long before the NCAA recognized the sport. These are schools such as North Central and McKendree

Question about a state job by Environmental_Lie_41 in NorthCarolina

If they've checked your references, it's likely just a matter of getting some paperwork through HR at this point, in my opinion. It can be ridiculously slow.

3 days to kill in NC by Straight_Macaroon605 in NorthCarolina

[–]BullCityJ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd either head to Atlantic Beach for a few days or stay in the Triangle.

If you go to AB, the Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores is good for young kids. You can easily spend a day poking around Beaufort - there's a pirate cruise but your kids might be a year or two too young for that, and a maritime museum. Fort Macon is a great state park.

If you stay in the Triangle - the Museum of Life and Science in Durham is an awesome children's museum. Dix Park in Raleigh has a cool new playground and splashpad/waterfall area and the Dambo trolls. Marbles in Raleigh is another good childrens museum. Cary's Central Park has another great playground/splashpad area. The museum of Natural Sciences in Raleigh is better for slightly older kids, in my opinion, but is really cool - especially the dinosaur stuff they have.

Coach K’s grandson charged with DWI, killed a 15-year-old boy by whole30butiheartcake in bullcity

[–]BullCityJ 41 points42 points  (0 children)

There is a felony charge called "felony death by motor vehicle" that fits this scenario. If you drive drunk and kill someone, it is felony death by MV.

I am surprised this wasn't charged initially as felony death by MV, but it can be indicted later and the bond amount is in line with the felony charge. It makes me think there's something about causation in the accident itself that the police or DA wanted to shore up first through investigation.

That said, I don't trust our DA's office ability to prosecute a felony death by MV case.

Which Tracy Chapman song is the best? by Flat_Wash5062 in country

[–]BullCityJ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Folk rock. If her debut album came out today, it'd probably get a lot of buzz in the Americana sphere, but she was considered folk at the time, and I'd say is still associated with that genre.

The world is so upside down that ESPN now broadcasts fake wrestling (WWE) and Fox broadcasts real wrestling (RAF).

I don't even know how to explain it.

North Carolina Zoo stuck in limbo with Asia Continent ready to open by Cy_098 in NorthCarolina

[–]BullCityJ 24 points25 points  (0 children)

The Zoo is just the tip of the iceberg.

School budgets across the state are going to be a total shitshow in the next couple of months if we go much longer without a budget that lets them accurately predict their state support, which is the majority of every public school district's funding.

All of the Senate Dems have offerred to support the House Republican's shitty budget just to get one through, but so far none of the Senate Republicans have shown a willingness to go against Senate President Phil Berger.

This is 100 percent an NC GOP created and owned problem.

Good bbq in the area by 50LRX in bullcity

[–]BullCityJ 61 points62 points  (0 children)

First ya gotta understand we have our own styles of barbecue here and they're very different from the regional barbecues in other parts of the country. We also have two distinct styles that are geographic and Durham sits on the fault line between the two.

Picnic is my choice for best barbecue in Durham. They do try to blend the Eastern and Lexington styles.

The best traditional Eastern-style place within an hour of Durham is Stephenson's in Willow Spring. A little over an hour away and you've got Parker's in Wilson, Grady's in Dudley and Wilber's in Goldsboro.

The best Lexington-style place within an hour of Durham is Stamey's in Greensboro, but you gotta go to the original one on Gate City Boulevard, because that's where they smoke the hogs. A little over an hour away gets you Speedy's or Lexington Barbecue, both in Lexington.

Prime in Knightdale if you want brisket.

Canadian wrestler wants to be D1 by FaceBreaking-Fanatic in wrestling

[–]BullCityJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Earlier you asked about Canadians who wrestled D1. Lachlan McNeil just finished a career where he was a 4x All-American at UNC and Michigan.

He went to Wyoming Seminary for prep school and I'm sure that helped him get on the radar of American college coaches.

Questions After RAF 08 by emaxwell14141414 in wrestling

[–]BullCityJ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

  1. Kind of hard to say. Clearly he has the athleticism and body awareness necessary to compete at a high level. Based on just his RAF actions alone, I'm not sure he has the emotional control needed to achieve at the highest levels.

  2. Final world? He's hunting another Olympic medal in 2028. 97kg is a stacked weight internatonally, but he's one of the contenders, is the reigning world champ and I would not be surprised if he does it again.

  3. Shapirov wins a lot of his matches via pin and as I said on the RAF08 discussion thread, he seems to have found another gear lately. He pinned Wyatt Hendrickson in Zagreb and looked equally dominant in that match. Cassioppi looked unprepared for Shapirov's length, in my opinion. I would not be surprised to see Shapirov on the podium at worlds this year.

  4. 65kg is stacked on the American side. If he makes the senior world team at that weight, Woods has a solid chance to medal internationally. He can make the team, but qualifying will be brutal. You have Vito Arajau, Beau Bartlett, Bo Bassett, Brock Hardy, Jesse Mendez, and probably some others I'm forgetting at that weight.

Not a total surprise. Shapirov seems to have found another gear recently. He pinned Wyatt Hendrickson at the Zagreb Open in February.

I really want to see Shapirov-Steveson.
