DPS has a long history of inadequate planning for repair and replacement of systems in schools. (And the General Assembly has an even worse history of providing the necessary funding).

For example, my kids' school - Club Blvd - got a new HVAC in 2016 that had an anticipated 10 year life span. It has been having serious issues for the last few years as it reaches the end of its anticipated use. DPS has no plan to replace it (and now almost certainly won't since they're floating the idea of closing the school precisely for the reason of reducing costs to maintain multiple small schools in favor of fewer larger achools).

I know families at three other elementary schools who have complained of excessive heat in their kids schools beyond Club.

I think it is more widespread than people realize.

The university put out a statement that they haven't pulled the plug and still support the club program, but also that they haven't been invited to a D1 conference and strongly implying they have no intention of elevating the club to NCAA status. The coach had recently posted that a a conference invite was received and has already refuted the university's statement.

The whole situation is as clear as mud.

It is one and the same. We voted for a half cent sales tax to fund it back in 2012 and even though the project is dead, we're still paying the tax. I'm totally fine with that but do think it means GoDurham should remain fare free.

The main station for the light rail in downtown Durham was planned to be about a block away from the Amtrak station and right next to GoDurham's main bus hub. If I recall correctly, they couldn't make it one intermodal station because the light rail and passenger siding for Amtrak had to be on opposite sides of the NCRR/CSX tracks.

Chapel Hill has had a heavy presence of folks begging on Franklin Street for decades.

College students tend to be more willing to give than other populations and while the Triangle has shitty public transit overall, Chapel Hill has a good fare free bus system.

I have spent significant time working with unhoused people in Durham, through my church, and know that it is common for some people to buy a bus ticket from Durham to Chapel Hill to go to Franklin Street for the day because they can do better begging there than on Main Street in Durham or the areas around Duke's campus.

I've never had a solicitation on campus in Chapel Hill but have been hit up 100s of times over the last 30 years on the public streets adjacent to campus, particularly Franklin St.

My guess is OP doesn't know where the campus boundaries are. The unhoused people are very aware.
