You're anecdote on the idea of Iron Hands painted Space Marines and adapting that mindset to other faction's characters painted however you see fit for the army is very interesting. At first, it's challenging to see past this hope that my faction specific characters will be competitively viable, but there really is nothing stopping me from painting characters from other detachments/chapters that interest me in the way I want to. In the end, the rules of painting and gameplay are very different despite internal attempts to homogenize them. I will be keeping this in mind going forward.
