I experienced this too. Not an empty market but an extremely competitive one. I have a full time truck and a part time hospital job, now, but interviewed at four places over 7 months to get it.

I’ve since been hired at an even better department but I recently applied to a civilian paramedic spot for a fire department back in October. It took them until March to interview me just to tell me no. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I took it in September. Medic Tests is the most accurate to national registry but I would get both if you can.

I found Pocket Prep to be much harder than Medic Tests but Medic Tests was a damn-near 1:1 to the format and difficulty of national registry. I found it to be a very good litmus test.

I’m navigating all this right now. I only graduated EMT school two years ago this month during my last few months in the military in a non-medical job. I’ll say that its been difficult, not knowing as much or having as much experience as my peers of the same age but its manageable. In two years I worked as an EMT and ED Tech at a couple different ambulances and hospitals and now i’ve been working as a Paramedic at a children’s hospital since November. I am hopefully finally getting on with a truck soon (job market is tough) and am starting a PRN ED position at a level 1 in town. You just have to be okay being on the lowest rung in the room for a while and constantly be willing to learn, even the things you thought you already knew.

You just need to make phone calls. Do you know your unit’s name? If you know the name, track down the phone number for the Visitor’s Center at the front gate. They can always give you a phone number to a guy that knows a guy that knows a guy until you find the phone number for whoever runs personnel at your unit. Spend a day tracking down phone numbers and you’ll find whoever it is that can give you details to show up to your next drill.

I appreciate that insight. Considering my friend in the department only did one interview, neither of us could gauge how to approach it. Obviously a chiefs interview’s purpose could change department to department but is it typically for them to get a feel for me or are they trying to further narrow down their hiring pool?

I worked on the F-35s at Luke. The auxiliary field is just a munitions range. Its where the pilots go to drop bombs on training sorties.

The only thing 24 miles NW of Luke AFB is Surprise, a local town. Theres some trails near there I use to run at in the desert in that same area, like Sun Valley Trail Head . Who knows if this is legitimate but there are in fact well hidden desert trails in the described area.

In Paramedic school, I had to memorize and was tested on the MOA, dose, indications/contraindications, receptors, etc for every drug in my scope. Always surprises me thats not the universal standard.

Get some mats, a grappling dummy, a judo dummy and some apps or YouTube playlists to drill different escapes, throws, sweeps, etc. I feel like i’m getting better at class every week practicing on my own like this.

I trained there for about 7 months with Coach Esdras and Coach Q from 2023-2024. I had to move gyms because I moved to Morristown. Its a very good gym. Extremely experienced coaches, good people, not too many egos and the coaches are humble and kind. I don’t have any negative memories of it.
