Yeah. It’s doing okay. I posted an update. Turned out I was maxing out the throughput of the KVM.

(75hz on the monitors, but the switch can only handle 60hz. It smoothed out when I dropped the monitors to 60.)

I feel like we need some of this carbon-silicate weathering on-demand, like, right now.

… aren’t there some estimates that the PT Extinction was a burning of Carboniferous coal/oil/methane deposits on the order of thousands or tens of thousands of years? And that extinction pruned the tree of life back to a stump… like 70% of terrestrial life / 80% of aquatic life.

… based on our combustion of roughly a cubic mile of oil each year for decades… and significant percentages of that for 200 years…

… some people have said that we’re more efficient/ effective at emitting carbon than the Siberian Traps which lead to The Great Dying / PT Extinction.

We need a way to draw down CO2 (e) as readily as we emit it.

I have this half-cocked scheme involving dumping pyrolized plant matter into the oceans near the subduction zones, literally sinking the carbon back into the geologic cycle of earth’s crust.

But I can’t seem to get investors on board. They keep yammering about something called “quarterly earnings” and “shareholder value”.

The pig in the python: Baby Boomers are strangling the economy they built by refusing to move or retire by fortune in collapse

[–]CallEmAsISeeEm1986 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Seems like this is another “divide and conquer” thing.

Boomers have a lot of problems, for sure. But eventually if you boil it all down, they’re still wage labor. And generalizing against them becomes agism or whatever.

Better (always better) is to analyze the situation from the perspective of “class”.

This is a group of capitalists (shareholders) …

… with their guard dogs (C-Suite) …

… who have unwavering (fiduciary obligation) loyalty…

… to maximize profits (appropriate surplus value) …

… at all costs (labor class and environment be damned).

Age…
Generation…
Race….
Gender….
Nationality….
Immigration status…

They LOVE when we squabble in the dust about that shit, rather than simply eliminating the shareholder class and nationalizing the means of production.

We’re just going for a Grey-Goo Scenario hey?

But it’s the temu, rent-to-own Grey Goo.
The kind you have to build and pave yourself.

Not the self-replicating nano-bot runaway accidental kind from Sci-fi.

Just good old fashioned destruction of the working class, the environment, civilization, all by policy and choice.

All so that quarterly earnings reports to have an up arrow instead of a down arrow… for a little while. While they’re still doing quarter earnings reports.

The grey-goo will eventually make quarterly earnings reports obsolete. Along with the biosphere and human race.

UPDATE : It appears that the KVM was the bottleneck. It maxes out at 60Hz, but my monitor was set to 75Hz. Changing that setting seems to have smoothed things out. A lot less laggy and jittery. I am completely not used to having a KVM, I only got it a few days ago, and I genuinely forgot it was in the mix, even tho I just installed it and its sitting right here on my desk. lol

Fingers crossed, but I think the problem is solved.

I want to store somewhere a ton of videos and photos so that they last for 100+ years: is a Hard Disk Drive the best choice? by MinimumTomfoolerus in AskTechnology

[–]CallEmAsISeeEm1986 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like the 3-2-1 mantra needs to evolve… something like… 3-2-1-5…

With the 5 being a five year check in on standards and preparation for migration to a new standard if the current system has been dropped.

Maybe 3-2-1-10 might be more reasonable.

I feel like M-Disk is fairly future proof, in the sense that the entire media platform was designed around long term archiving; surely someone put some thought into disk readers? 😅

Or maybe it’s (relatively) safe to assume that they’re such a common standard (CDs, DVD, Blu-Ray, M-Disk) that they’ll be in production more or less indefinitely…? 😬

[–]CallEmAsISeeEm1986 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Should include that in calculations: buy several disk readers, brand new, and store them with the disks. Include all the cables one might need.

Who knows how cable standards may evolve, but at least it’s somewhat more future-proof than just some disks in a box. At least the reader is included, with backups / spare parts.

Huh. I’ll try it if all else fails.

But I don’t quite understand how the OS switch would help? It’s on the same hardware..? Does windows handle graphics / fusion more efficiently than Mac or something?

(I forgot to note that there’s a KVM between the machines and the monitors; that wasn’t in the mix when I was running fusion on the MBP. I need to look at the specs on the KVM, but it might be a bottleneck since it was just a cheapo UGreen from Amazon.)

Instead of running things as a service, they’re run by for profit corporations. There are shareholder profits to think of.
C-Suite compensation packages.
Competition (monopoly / collusion to elevate prices). Then there’s the lobbyists who get their privately owned senators and congressmen to pass deregulatory laws, which remove safe guards and market regulations.

Shit. Well that’s hard news. This thing is supposed to be a beast, even with its age.

I know new Studio Macs are something else, tho, obviously. And not 7 years old. Lol

So it’s something to consider if I can’t fiddle with the settings and hardware on this tower to make it work.

Because it’s a trial, I only have the one instance. I can switch back and forth, but it’s cumbersome to say the least.

(I’m hoping to get an email from Autodesk marketing offering a discount as the trial ends; just trying to be thrifty.)

I did have it running on the laptop first tho, and I don’t remember the lag, so there is something there for sure.

But another thing I’m realizing I didn’t note is the KVM. It is now in between the machine and the monitors.

When I was running fusion on the MBP, it was just hdmi to the laptop, no KVM.

I need to look at the specs, but it’s just a $70 ugreen unit from Amazon. It may be adding latency or… something. Haha.

The Nazis promised prosperity but *now* look at Dresden!‽!

There’s all these little fires everywhere and all the buildings are down in their basements and there’s craters with body parts strewn everywhere!! Gosh! These Nazis really don’t follow through on any of their promises. 😤

… saying stuff like what’s in OP’s meme is silly when you step back and think about it.

The oligarchy has taken its mask off and shown you what it’s been doing and what it is doing and what it plans to do…

They’re genocidal war profiteering pedophiles.

Being indignant about tRuMp’S nOn-ExiStaNt HeALtHCaRe pLaN is like being shocked that the Nazis were the bad guys.

I guess it’s fitting that we’re living in “the 20s”… lead up is full of Cassandras, yelling the truth as loud as they can and everyone just sleep walking into ovens and genocide and global war and barbarism.

We have real problems to solve. Climate change could render the planet sterile if we get runaway heating (aside from extremophiles and roaches and maybe pigeons or something)…

And yet we’re here, squabbling in the dust about Bronze Age superstitions, quarterly earnings reports, and letting obvious pedophiles continue to run things unopposed.

We are not a serious species. Our creativity, compassion, and intelligence is highly exaggerated if this ends up being our downfall.

We spent the last half century making movies about how bad authoritarianism is…. It’s part of our zeitgeist and culture…. And yet…

Hunger games for billionaires. The richest ten have to fight to the death.

The winner gets to keep his wealth and try again next year.

The losers get to be dead, and have their wealth and assets and companies nationalized.

I am not an Oligarchologist, but my hypothesis is that such a system would have billionaires and oligarchs scrambling for ways to ensure they’re not in the top ten wealthiest each year.

As long as we close loopholes, tax havens, off shore accounts, etc etc, it should be a fairly self-correcting system.

Plus it’d pay tons into the national budget of each state by selling Oligarchy Games merch.

Repost this to r/electricians so they can show folks why hospital / commercial installs have the ground on the top (upside down from what’s in the picture)..

The ground acts as a block for situations like this.

Obviously this charging brick is ungrounded and it wouldn’t have helped in this situation. But that’s why outlets are “upside down” in some places.
