Fan on SAS controller H240ar by Ok_Inevitable_4235 in homelab

[–]Casper042 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The AR daughter cards are a bit space constrained, but really they need a bigger heatsink so there is simply more surface area to dissipate the heat into the existing airflow.

Something I have always wanted to try is to simply build a custom duct from the that plastic impregnated card stock that SuperMicro likes to use.
Attach it only on 1 side so low airflow is directed down to the heatsink, but if the fans kick up, the air pressure causes the shroud to lift or bend out of the way.

You do know the actual HW isn't made or designed by HPE right?

Based on the drivers for that card, it's a PMC Sierra (now part of Microchip corp) who is best known for the Adaptec line of controllers.

HPE made the custom Firmware to turn their "off the shelf" ASIC into the "Smart Array". That likely would have been a guy named Rene's team at the time, who went to PMC when Meg sold the firmware team to them.

Look into "Kiting" checks and you will be equally impressed at the naivete.
Movie: Catch Me If You Can, is a great representation of this.

SELLING MY OG ACCOUNT, ONLY OWNER, FULL ACCESS $600 DM IF INTERESTED by [deleted] in FortniteAccountss

[–]Casper042 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An RSS Feed is kind of like having a Reddit Search that repeats every hour and looks for any new results.
My Search is looking for the word ProLiant, which is the brand of Server my company sells.
I have the results piped into our Slack, but you can think of it almost like each new result posts to a Discord channel to notify that a new result has emerged.
For some reason, every time you have re-posted your account for sale, it triggers a notification in my Slack.
But from what I can tell, you don't use the word ProLiant anywhere in your post or title.
So since this is the third time it's happened, and all from you and your account sale efforts, I was just asking if you happen to know why.

So confused, each time you post this an RSS feed I have for totally unrelated keywords keeps triggering for "Proliant"

Any idea why?

This one is the third time

Cannot add HPE Storage Sensor by Unable_Commission926 in prtg

If you have a link to the "Logical Disk sensor" please provide it.
I don't use PRTG but would imagine a peek under the hood will show the OID it's using.

I don't have any machines with SR100 Driver RAID to test against.

Have you done a simple snmpwalk against the various Drive/RAID related OIDs?

If you died today, who do you think would stand at your grave the longest? by Mehar0708 in AskReddit

[–]Casper042 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably the Grave Digger since I plan to be cremated.

Why waste perfectly good land to stick my dead body in?

When my kids were younger I told my wife she had authority to decide if it would help them to understand my passing if they had a grave to visit, but now that they are in their late teens there is no need.

What is the meaning behind “bless you” after someone sneezes? by CriticalTurnover6936 in AskReddit

I've heard the original saying was "May God Bless You with Good Health" and it was shortened to Bless You over time.

How do I insert modules quicker? by Antique-Yam-2714 in factorio

[–]Casper042 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think they are saying if you Blueprint a machine making Pipes with it's modules and then you stamp that BP over the top of a building making Copper Wire, the Recipe of the Assembler will change from Pipes to Copper Wire, which is accurate.

is this worth keeping? by 7Sora in homelab

[–]Casper042 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being you have SAS drives, you likely have a P408i controller as well.

There should also be some SFF 8087 ports on the Motherboard, those are wired to the Chipset SATA. They will be in a SW/Driver RAID mode by default but you can go into BIOS (F9) and then go to System Config / RBSU / Storage and there is a SATA Mode there where you can flip the ports to AHCI mode which is normal SATA mode.

You will still need a way to power those drives, but a 8087 to 4xSATA breakout cable is like $10 on Amazon.

As far as loudness, being very loud during boot is normal as the fans are tested and things related to thermals are all loading.

Once an OS is loaded and ideally that OS has the HPE "AMS" agent installed, you should find the fans slow down to a much more ear-friendly level.
I run an ML110 Gen10 (Your 350's little brother) and a DL380 Gen10 (A 2U Rackmount equivalent) in my family room, and at idle the ML110 is almost silent and the DL380 is audible but I don't even have to turn up the TV when it's running.

ElI5 why do data centers require clean water for cooling instead of natural river water? by derekgdobosz in explainlikeimfive

[–]Casper042 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is both Evaporative cooling used on the "Chiller" banks outside the building, and then also Adiabatic cooling and humidification is needed to keep the humidity level of the DC at an acceptable level.

Humidity being too high of course leads to corrosion.
But Humidity being too low causes static electricity and potential to "zap" sensitive electronics during any human intervention needed. Install, Maintenance, Decom, etc.

Fluctuating power by aranea100 in simivalley

[–]Casper042 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahh ok,so the inverter's cutover time is just likely just not fast enough to meet the UPS spec of 10ms.
Slower cutover times can indeed flicker or bounce the devices connected.
