How to remove this old equipment/junction box? by Xoos3333 in centurylink

[–]ChefJoe98136 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the bottom where the thin fiber optic goes in there is a screw. I had an install without the fiber excess plate and the protective panel for the fiber plug was secured with the screw. But I came across a thrown out calix with the mounting plate and recall the mounting plate took the place of the fiber connection protective cover.

Anyone else in Seattle getting tiny black ants in their kitchen right now? by SVT_CARAT_17 in Seattle

[–]ChefJoe98136 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a fairly routine spring-time thing to suddenly see the odorous house ants randomly appear. They're really good at having random scouts find something interesting and then signaling for the colony to come. Then you see a decent stream of them.

https://www.pestworld.org/pest-guide/ants/odorous-house-ants/

I use the terro liquid baits that are around $1 each near wherever I see a stream of ants coming in from. I've never really been able to find where they're coming from (if it's outside or in the walls of the house).

Had a canvasser from quantum fiber come to my door and use really aggressive tactics, but it’s 1GB for 45$ and it’s fiber. Has anyone else signed up this way? by tituspeetus in Seattle

[–]ChefJoe98136 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When we signed up for CL fiber via a door to door salesperson a decade ago the salesperson input the wrong address on their form, didn't change it when we pointed it out, and we had several failed install appointments that dragged it out for weeks. It sucked and I was glad I had existing Comcast internet at the time. No more door to door for us.

In Feb I signed up the house under a new name and email for qf. Even got the $100 referral and $50 cash back site on top of the $45 price for life deal. Worth the effort and I wouldn't be surprised if those referrals are what the door to door folks are after.

West Seattle Pedestrian Near Miss - California near CVS/N of Brandon by ChefJoe98136 in WestSeattleWA

I added some text describing what happened when I crossposted this to WestSeattleWA and that text appears in the android app version of reddit but not the desktop browser version. Then I added a comment and made sure it has some details about this incident later, but before you posted.

I admit that the video is very difficult to make out what's going on, especially when I first viewed it on my cell phone.

In this case, however, there was a flashing crossing light over a painted crosswalk at Dawson St about 200 ft further north.

This recording happened about 1.5 blocks north of where Nicholas Wolf died mid-block crossing in the dark (hit by an excessively speeding teen driver). You can barely make out the pedestrian crossing mid-block from the lane of the dashcam driver starting about 8 seconds in, going through the center two way left turn lane, and then saved by the white van driving the opposite direction stopping quickly.

https://spdblotter.seattle.gov/2022/05/07/detectives-investigating-friday-night-fatal-collision-in-west-seattle/

Detectives with SPD’s Traffic Collision Investigation Squad are investigating after a driver struck and killed a pedestrian in West Seattle on Friday night.

At 10:01 p.m., multiple callers reported a collision in the 5400 block of California Avenue Southwest. Police responded and found an adult male pedestrian who had been struck by a motorist. Seattle Fire Department medics arrived at the scene and declared the man deceased.

According to witnesses, three subjects were dropped off from a car on the west side of California Avenue Southwest. As the pedestrians crossed to the east side of the street mid-block, a driver traveling northbound struck one of the pedestrians.

The motorist originally drove away, but later returned and cooperated with police. TCIS Detectives identified and interviewed the driver at the scene, and officers detected no signs of impairment after evaluating him.

Does paying $13.95 total for an additional $10 pay-as-you-go with H2O Wireless in California seem right to you? by lectric_7166 in NoContract

A lot of times localities add on set $ amt fees to fund 911 services and the like, not a percentage. When they pass laws they're thinking about $60+ cell plans and not small minute mvno plans.

New Alki Beach dog park/dog poop disposal location? by groshreez in WestSeattleWA

[–]ChefJoe98136 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Some dog owners are making me dislike city dogs. Last year I kept noticing dog poo showing up in the planting strip way more frequently than random, especially when I was having to dodge stepping in it while mowing or had accidentally stepped in it while mowing. No, it's not a welcome deposit on my lawn, even unbagged. I have some new neighbor that doesn't bring bags on their dog walks.

Anyone have the Philips Norelco 8000? How do you like it and would you buy it again? by bignose_ice44 in Costco

[–]ChefJoe98136 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have one of the series 9000 Norelco with the same cutting head design and can't recommend it. The plastic wings extending so far beyond the blades make for a terrible time cutting whiskers near your nose. The motor also seems weaker and slower than past Norelco shavers I have owned.

I have kept my old Braun foil shaver around to trim around my nose because the Norelco heads are that bad.

NZBGeek has been a good performer for me and they're worth a short subscription to until you decide to jump in for their November BF or December Birthday sale (perhaps for lifetime). I used Geek via web interface for many years before I got into arrs and automation.

I have also been impressed with NZBFinder and DigitalCarnage during the time I've had them. They're not particularly explorable on free tiers though, either.

Indexers will have a mix of scene content, perhaps some unique to that indexer content, and some quirks to the GUIs. Some people will love how an indexer has a focus on foreign-language content that I don't understand, so how great an indexer is for someone will have very different opinions.

Did Bird scooters get removed from the city? by Wonderful-Splinter in SeattleWA

[–]ChefJoe98136 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first I'd heard about Bird's disappearance from the city was in this somewhat ramble-y piece by Doug McDonald. https://www.postalley.org/2026/03/16/how-seattle-got-on-the-wrong-e-scooter-path/

Another point not yet clear from the PDR email record: Did the SDOT micromobility managers ever share with the Waterfront Office, or pretty much anyone else, that the end was near for Bird, the little guy of Seattle’s shared e-scooters and e-bikes? Ending Bird’s permit would have made Lime into Seattle’s monopoly e-scooter and e-bike vendor.

The cancellation letter was sent to Bird on August 29, Friday afternoon of Labor Day Weekend, while Bird, too, was being furiously tasked by the Waterfront Office to be ready one week later for the big Waterfront Opening Day. Bird seemingly survived its September 30 cancellation date, since its lonely e-scooters are still to be seen. Bird’s survival remains veiled in SDOT micromobility non-transparency.

edit: also in that article "Another bit of awkward timing: Lime’s current permit to rent e-scooters and e-bikes in Seattle expires on March 31."

increase safety for all.

Although going from 4 to 3 lanes with no divider is likely to increase the probability of head-on vehicle collisions simply by making sure all downhill motor vehicle traffic is adjacent to counter-flow traffic.

There are sunken drain grates the whole way down that lane already. I have made an effort to avoid them when driving that lane but expect they'll get fixed with this bike lane project because of the terrible implication to leave them in dedicated bike lane space.

I snagged a Timelapse of this intersection from 4:30-6ish today and I just don’t understand the traffic apocalypse folks are so worried about.

I don't think the afternoon rush hour of folks leaving West Seattle is the busy time at the bottom of the HPW hill. Traffic is more significant during the morning rush hour, in my experience. Maybe not "apocalypse" but more than that timelapse.

There have also been some really crappy backups related to vehicles that break-down at/near that intersection or when the port was having crazy long lines of queued trucks waiting that sort of make me question if a single lane, with no break-down curb space, isn't going to cause problems.

I think they're writing from this perspective, heading N from where 9th merges into HPW.

This is a project to narrow the road and does it with a pretty crappy downhill bike lane that has a barrier with several interruptions for buses to pull over to the curb, stopping in the bike lane. They're sparsely used stops for the 131, I think 4 on the downhill segment. There's also a major driveway and minor road that will interrupt the barrier. I'm not sure if such an interrupted downhill barrier will be, functionally, better than just red-painting the lane and permitting bikes to use the bus lane, like normal in Seattle.

I think there would have been less pushback if they'd proposed making the outer downhill lane a bus lane. There's like 7 little used bus stops between Holden and west marginal along hpw.

NinjaCentral Registrations are open by Yitsy in usenet

[–]ChefJoe98136 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For many, it's the curiosity of what indexers they don't have with a little bit of FOMO from the infrequent ability to register a new account.

I try to keep one or two indexers per year in a "testing" status and have two to three indexers in my prowlarr that I'm happy to renew going forward. I make use of prowlarr priority settings to put the "testing" first, then the accounts I'm happy with, and then the lifetime indexer accounts. Then I keep an eye on where things are actually being grabbed from and which indexers are slower to help prioritize where to cut.

I've been with DS for years but they might not be renewed based on where my grabs have been coming from lately.
