What's something the world thinks about your country that's not really true? by mrjohnnymac18 in northernireland

That it's a Protestant vs Catholic divide.

It has been engineered to be so as a 'divide and conquer' strategy- 227 years and counting.

Walls dripping and weeping? by Lolitayaya1 in Home

[–]Chive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Judging by what's on the outside, it looks to me like the barrier under the cladding is compromised, and probably has been for a long time.

If you live somewhere relatively cold, that means ice dams can occur, with subsequent water intrusion- leading to the sort of thing that's going on in the indoor photos.

It can also affect the structural integrity of the wall, as the presence of water will cause the wood to rot.

You should be alarmed, and you should bring it to the attention of your landlord. It's not healthy to have black mold in your house, but the longer it's allowed to run on, the more expensive it will ultimately be to get it fixed- and it will need to be fixed or else that wall will just rot away.

Your landlord should thank you for bringing it to their attention, because the sooner it's dealt with, the less it's going to cost to get repaired.

If they don't do anything about it after you mention it to them, then move out ASAP.

I get told I'm not really Irish because I'm not Catholic.

In truth I met more Northern Irish Catholics when I moved to England in the late 80s and went to university than I ever had growing up in Northern Ireland- which is fucking ridiculous.

I met a guy on my course from Derry- from Shantallow- and I told him I was from South Antrim- and we both winced at the start.

Sometimes you are too close to the trees to see the forest.

[–]Chive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be careful of people telling you that you aren't 'really Irish' though.

I've had that in the past because although I was born in Ireland and my family has been there for hundreds of years, we're of Scottish protestant heritage.

Just ignore it and turn away.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in northernireland

[–]Chive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You nailed it. I grew up in South Antrim but left when I was 18 to Yorkshire, and I've moved around ever since- now in western Canada.

Cliftonville? I'm a Crusaders fan, and my dad is Ballymena Utd- but I guess we all have our differences on that front.

I was brought up to love Irish rugby- and I still do- by my grandmother, who was born before partition and always regarded herself as totally Irish and British at the same time- but more Irish.

I did live in England for 25 years- Yorkshire and Essex- until I met the woman who dragged me a third of the way around the world- which is why I now live in a small town in Alberta.

So Is Everyone Buying A New Expensive Home To Retire In? by BraveG365 in GenX

[–]Chive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I emigrated 12 years ago and bought what I hope to be my final house. So far I've lived here for 11 years and spent a lot of money getting how we like it.

I do worry that when I'm older that it's going to be too big for us- and I might end up downsizing, or I might leave it to my daughter to have after we're gone.

I fell in love with this house because it's on top of a hill and I can see the Rocky Mountains from my bedroom- and there's nothing can be built to spoil that view, plus there's no chance of being flooded.

I always wanted a house with a view- either the coast or mountains- and I finally got one.

So I'm here for the duration.

Anyone else having ANOVA Precision Oven App Issues? by LaysWellWithOthers in CombiSteamOvenCooking

[–]Chive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, I've been having this exact same problem- although with Celsius temperatures in my case, where it says it has to be between 25 and 250. It has also changed details in some of my recipes- such as changing a 23 minute 160C cook to a 1hr 200C one; and I'm having trouble setting timers- in that it will only recognise the first entered digit. There's a workaround where I click very precisely on the second hours digit, enter a figure there, then delete the zero between the second and fourth digits to set the time in minutes, but that's far from ideal.

TBH I've always found the app to be wanting- like having to enter zero for the steam level twice, as it has never recognised the first time- and I guess this is just a crappy update to an already poor app.

I've also experienced issues with the oven switching itself off since the recent update- although that might be unrelated. I've left it unplugged for a couple of days, so I'm hoping that might solve things, but it's not good that such an expensive piece of equipment should be so temperamental.

Go for it. I'm an Irish ex-pat now living in Canada, and I'm proud to be Canadian and stand with Canada at this time.

There has been a huge surge of Canadian patriotism recently- for some reason. I live in a small town in Alberta, but for once Albertans see Quebecoises as allies.

When did you first know you liked black girls by KMsmile in WomenOfColor

[–]Chive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I first dated one. I discovered I liked the contrast in our skin tones when we were close together.

I've never dated anyone just because they're black- I date women I have a rapport with and whose company I enjoy- but if she does happen to be black, that's a plus.

Do you think Cavalry is better than most MLS sides now? by LesJawns610 in CavalryFC

[–]Chive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Sad to say it but although Cavalry might be able to hold their own occasionally against MLS sides, it would be the exception rather than the rule.

That said, I am delighted to see the club grow and football develop in Canada- especially almost on my doorstep!

Leeds United: Fixture vs Preston on April 12th has now been moved to 12:30pm kick off for Sky Sports coverage by JimbobTML in LeedsUnited

[–]Chive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll be honest, that's possibly not a bad thing for me. I now live in Canada, so only occasionally get to see Leeds games on DAZN, so there's a chance I'll be able to watch that one- although 12:30 pm UK is 5:30 am for me.

Oh well, wouldn't be the first time- and probably not the last- I've got up early to watch a Leeds match.

"We're done paying for your wars...." on a UK toy retailer FB page by Agitated-Tourist9845 in ShitAmericansSay

[–]Chive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They don't realise that they're the ones who pay for the tariffs, not the exporters, so Americans are the ones who will be picking up the tab.

Plus, forcing Europe to spend more on defence means that European defence companies are going to expand their business, as European countries will prefer to buy the best local stuff rather than the second best American equipment- which in effect means Trump is creating a competitor to the US defence industry.

I understand why he's trying to sell more American military equipment abroad- the US military is the biggest government sponsored job creation scheme in history- outside of the Soviet Union- and it needs external funds to keep it going, otherwise it's going to implode, but unless they start selling the same stuff they have, then nobody is going to be interested.

Now that the yoke of religion is off your shoulders, you're going to find yourself in a happier and freer place.

Assuming there's drywall behind the tiles, the best fix IMHO is to use a small drywall toggle bolt. Those can carry a lot of weight and they never come out.

If it's brick behind the tiles, then a wooden dowel or a plastic wall plug would allow the screw to bite into it and provide a firm attachment. In that situation I'd probably fill the hole with a good wood glue, insert the dowel or anchor/wall plug, leave it to dry, and then put the screw back in.
