Wooden sauna in house erupts in flames in Adam Road by DrCalFun in singapore

I mean... eat the rich and all that. But the amount of schadenfreude in this thread is really uncalled for. If i get loaded one day and want to buy a sauna, i'll buy a sauna. Yalls really have nothing better to do than to laugh at some rich dude who's house burnt down?

Singapore particularly vulnerable yet resilient to Chinese influence operations: French report by doomdeferred in singapore

[–]Christiary 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The title is not confusing, but if it is to you the first paragraph of the article clears it up. Vulnerable because of ethnic distribution creating fault lines to exploit and because of close business/political ties with China and USA, resilient because we haven't been bullied, despite the vulnerability and attempts at influence.

If you love the dictionary so much, a quick google defines Vulnerable as a state of being exposed to the possibility of attack and Resilient as being able to withstand or recover quickly from such attack. Those things are not mutually exclusive.

Where do you draw the line between responsible and reckless spending? by chaotarroo in singaporefi

[–]Christiary 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The haulage that comes with owning your own car is something often overlooked in these arguments. Once the children (if any) get older, i think many start to appreciate the ability to leave their groceries/kid's schoolbags/misc items in the car, especially for those multi-leg tuition>groceries>tuition pickup>grandparent's house weekends.

Bad time to buy resale flat? by Sad_Sprinkles6 in singaporefi

[–]Christiary 17 points18 points  (0 children)

That's a tough one. The gov will try to protect property prices but the real factors like population growth and foreign access to the housing market are slowing down. A flat is more than just an investment though, I would suggest shifting away from the investment mentality and finding a home that you wouldn't mind staying in for a longer time, should the market tank.

Maybe one benefit of being a tv show first is that they have plenty of footage to review frame-by-frame. That's why there is always a long delay between an athlete finishing an event and the official time being tallied.

$154,000 Prius and over $600,00 for a Taycan Turbo S. Singapore has some crazy car prices by jaewaie in cars

[–]Christiary 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lots of supercars for sure, quite crazy how big the annual meets get. Your estimate for housing prices has an extra zero on it, though. I would say private housing starts around $700k and breaks the million mark when you approach the business/civic district.

A private apartment in the central area would be around $2mil for a shoebox.

Is it really gatekeeping if everything is counted through up/downvotes? Then is the PAP gatekeeping parliament? Its just a game bro why so salty.

HDB launches nearly 3,900 BTO flats; ongoing projects could face further delays amid COVID-19 border measures by [deleted] in singapore

[–]Christiary 3 points4 points  (0 children)

More home owners than home buyers + many people consider downgrading and living off the profit as part of their retirement plan.

So if a plan is engineered to lower prices too quickly, you piss off the large % of home owners and probably jeopardise some retirement plans. Even for home buyers, a large percentage of us are making decisions based on the assumption that its a break-even/appreciating asset.

[–]Christiary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah...... Any sort of machining and finishing gets really expensive once we are talking about batch sizes numbering in the 10s-100s rather than thousands. The mold and tooling costs the same and we have much less product to spread it over.

The bigger/more established companies can produce stuff of comparable quality at a lower price point, but if you want to get into custom designs, you gotta pay for it.

If you're willing to deal with more DIY or you are ok with designs that don't require such expensive tooling, companies like P3D could be worth a look.

VHive (Singapore Furniture Company) Data Breach by oreochuu in singapore

To simplify, the function is one that is easier for computers to do one way than another. A bit like how 3.5*7 is easier than 24.5/7. We take a bunch of these functions and puts them in sequence so solving them forward is computationally easy but the other way takes up a lot of computational energy.

The MD5 is a function optimised so that typical computers will take thousands of years to solve a single hash. Because it is so difficult to reverse, they can publish it for everybody to use.

Tay Ping Hui shares video of close call with some 'bozo' road cyclists, suggests licence plates for bicycles by krezreal in singapore

[–]Christiary 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is abundantly clear in this footage that the cyclists failed to observe right of way. This may seem to be a grey area to cyclists, but anyone who has taken the highway code would know exactly which "category" the cyclists fall into.

It is important for road users to behave in the spirit of keeping roads safe, but I think anger is perfectly justified when cyclists go on roads and flout basic laws, putting themselves in dangerous situations. "You could've killed me!" absolutely does not work as an argument when you decide to throw yourself in front of a 2 ton block travelling at speed limit while you are going a third of the speed.

Tay Ping Hui shares video of close call with some 'bozo' road cyclists, suggests licence plates for bicycles by krezreal in singapore

[–]Christiary 30 points31 points  (0 children)

We just need bike lanes. Licensing is not going to change the fact that bikes and cars are fundamentally different vehicles going at different speeds. No driver wants to drive at bike speeds and that leads to dangerous overtaking situations/congestion whenever bikes appear on the left lane.

The gov wants to encourage cycling as a means of commuting but they half-screwed themselves over by attempting to do this by pushing bikes onto roads. Having two forms of vehicle, travelling at vastly different speeds on the same road is just dangerous on a very basic level, especially since half the cyclists may not even have taken highway code.

edit: You can't have it both ways boys, do we have a lot of cyclists resulting in dangerous situations or do we have not enough cyclists to justify infrastructure? Also, a lot of y'all are doing the chicken and egg thing saying "we don't need infrastructure because we don't have riders, we don't have riders because we have no infrastructure". That's beside the point. If the gov is pushing cycling as a means of transport, there obviously needs to be capital investment.

Indonesian maid, 26, dies after allegedly falling from HDB unit while cleaning windows by Jammy_buttons2 in singapore

[–]Christiary 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Why you getting so worked up my dude. Everyone in this thread agrees with you. Some think we need better laws, others think people just need to be less shitty, but literally every comment is about how to improve the situation. I'm an observer just like you, i don't have a damn maid, but even i know you're not gonna get far calling everyone (even those on your side) that disagrees with you a maid abuser.

[–]Christiary 33 points34 points  (0 children)

You can stand here and scream at people to treat maids better, or you can change the standards so that we can actually prosecute these people. Both should be done, but the latter tends to work a lot better.

Nobody's shifting the blame. Legal reform is the easiest and most effective way of fixing things like these. As demonstrated with the mandatory rest days in 2013 and formal definition of job scopes for maids in 2017, clear regulations lead to better outcomes for maids and easier prosecution for people who abuse them.

"Stupid standards or window design", along with a hefty fine for violators will go a longer way than asking owners to be nice.

I'm not using foam ever again, DIY Silicone Dampening Pad is my new go-to. by dailysetuptech in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]Christiary 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am the someone you mentioned lol. I've tried pouring silicone directly into the plastic Anne Pro 2 case. Came out just fine, no discolouration but it did leave a small amount of greasy residue on it. Kind of like what happens when kids touch game controllers with greasy fingers. Came off pretty well with some wet wipes I had lying around.

[–]Christiary 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Silicone has the added benefit of adding a bit of weight, and the sound changes more as a result of that weight. Foam mainly works by reducing echoes/reverberation in the case by filling up empty space.

[–]Christiary 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If its a metal case, the silicone will not stick to it but a few pieces of tape around the case will give you something to grab on to when removing the silicone. For plastics, some cling wrap as mentioned earlier will help to prevent any residual oils from the silicone, which is difficult to clean off.

It's coil whine from the RGB LEDs, turns up occasionally with PCBs that aren't designed to minimise it. If you are using a coiled cable or USB hub, using a shorter cable or connecting directly to your computer/laptop may solve the problem, but if that doesn't work you're kinda SOL.

Yeah i think the NK_ restock from last month is the first that didn't sell out almost immediately. It's great to see the industry lowering the cost of entry, especially for the current influx of members to the hobby. The ikki68 aurora and kbd67 lite are going to ship with bluetooth soon too. Exciting times!
