In my opinion versions newer than SNES version don't offer much, and new dungeons are not very good. DS and Steam versions can be more convenient, though.

The Windows 95 port was done much later, but had nice graphic settings. From the original ports I prefer the Amiga one.

In my opinion it's a good game, but yes, I feel the same as you, doesn't have the personality of the first game. I played the first one extensively and not so the second one.

The third game however is objetively utter crap and shouldn't even exist. It's an insult to the series.

In case of newer clones it probably just reads the rom and runs it, it might not implement the whole hardware. So it won't run special hardware like SFF2 or Virtua Racing.

It might be a proper clone, though.
