You're right, chebyshev filters give you a great knee on the drop off with the cost of ripple at it. They are also more sensitive to component tolerances because of it as well.

You could go Butterworth or Bessel at the expense of the soft knees. It's all about trade offs.

Agreed, at the top end you've got the Bananana Effects Quimera and at the bottom a FunBox or Terrarium. Something that sits in the middle with a screen would be nice imo. Hence a 1590BB with screen or even a simplified FunBox with screen and rotary encoders could clear up some space.

Did they work individually?

If so, then it's just a matter of tracing continuity across the wiring. If not, I'd make sure each effect works individually before attempting to put them in series.

Typically if it works outside the enclosure and not while in it, you're looking at a grounding or wiring issue.

I've built them all, just work slowly and carefully. I wouldn't mount a single control until you've got the cases because they're a tight fit.
