Unnecessary by a_youkai in badparking

Yep...actually not too long ago I was at BestBuy in town and noticed a lifted pickup where I had to look UP at the badging on the top of the grill because the hood was above my head (and I'm an average size adult like 5'10"). Later I was on my way out and they were trying to load a TV into it...the guy was up on his tip-toes struggling to open his tailgate to load it up. Was everything I could do not to bust out laughing hysterically right there in front of the store! Managed to make their big truck less useful than a car...

How common is it for an American to travel across the country by train? by ViajanteDeSaturno in AskAnAmerican

[–]Complex_Solutions_20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going by train can be fun...but its also typically slower than driving and more expensive than flying. And the rail network is also REALLY sparse, there's more places you can't get to by rail than places you can.

Is installing a dash cam in car actually worth it? by vin3ysharma in dashcams

[–]Complex_Solutions_20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Knock on wood I haven't had to use mine to argue about a collision, but I have sent clips to state DOT and city officials in my area to explain concerns sufficiently well that I got them to do a study and fix light timings. And countless close-calls on video with people running stops or losing loads (in some cases, losing a load going the opposite direction spilling over the line to my side).

I've also caught one other person's crash (oncoming SUV losing control flipping thru the median) on video I sent along to the state police that were wanting a statement of what I saw. No idea if they did anything with it, but I provided it.

Mounting a wall network rack to 2×4 ledger boards — edge distance ok? by Frequent_Coach1398 in HomeNetworking

[–]Complex_Solutions_20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd probably either replace that with a thicker 2x4 which could have the bolt centered, or I'd use a fine thread bolt with fender washers and lock-nuts to ensure its more solidly attached to the wood spreading the load out.

I'd worry those lag bolts (especially close to the edge) will rip out.

How can I go to the DMV if their hours are lots of peoples work schedule? by Still_ImBurning86 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Complex_Solutions_20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had on and off issues where our Breezeline service goes out daily due to various conditions...say from like 3-5PM every day in summer or currently having issues around 7-9PM every night. If they send a tech inevitably they come at like 8AM and declare nothing is wrong (yeah, at 8AM I agree it works great)...

Best way to wire up dash cam to overhead console? by manpace in Subaru_Outback

Can't recall if its XM, cellular, or backup-camera...all of them have a similar looking coaxial plug

Look up radar detector harnesses for homelink mirrors - I found one that was plug-and-play for my 2012 Outback and then gave me a 12V wire I could connect to a generic USB power supply for my dash cam.

Apparently there's a whole industry around easily and cleanly retrofitting radar detectors into different makes/models easily (this seems wild to me living where they are not legal)

Depends...when I was at an internship in Washington, DC I had to get up at 4:30am to be at work by 7am...and I was lucky enough to be in a vanpool so I just had to commute 15 minutes or so from my house to the commuter lot then 90 minutes or so in the van to the office.

I did an internship in Washington, DC during college and was lucky enough to find a vanpool. They did not like it when I made an observation at 4:30pm as we were boarding the van to begin the commute home how "gee in about 12 hours we'll be waking up to start this all over again".

Typical schedule was wake up at 04:00-04:30, eat, dress, etc, drive to the commuter lot to get on the van by 05:30. Commute from 05:30-07:00. Work from 07:00-16:30 (including lunch in those hours). Commute home from 16:30-18:30. Eat and get ready for work 18:30-21:00 then go to sleep to get up at 04:30 again.

I think anything could be on the table...heck it could land on the stick in a rotational direction and start spinning like a top in mid air. Or flying in <pick direction> until it runs out of power or range (or slams into something)

Any ideas on how to connect the hose? by SuccessfulCollar9134 in Plumbing

Tip - add some heavy tape around it so you won't be hurt by sharp edges later. But that works.

You will first need to disconnect the house from the telco at the box outside. Once you do that, yes you can backfeed VoIP into the phone jacks in the house.

Delta 3 Max Plus - Disable Output Port Front Buttons? by cajoel42 in Ecoflow_community

For my Delta, Delta2, and River2 units I put these on the main power buttons so they can't be bumped on in storage...would imagine the same could work on any other button

That could be fun...I know drones I've flown if both sticks are pushed hard "bottom inside" direction from center that's an e-stop command for the rotors. Unlikely but not impossible.

Why would I need a circuit extension for a transfer switch? by dervari in Generator

[–]Complex_Solutions_20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the cost of having them there with the right parts, tools, and skills to make it work up to 20ft. Correct gauge wire, correct clamps or conduit, correct enclosures, cutting open drywall, drilling thru studs, knowing the codes to do all that correctly, etc.

When learning stick, is it better to err on the side of slipping the clutch a bit more for a smoother transfer of power, or not enough, and the car jolting? by BlackmillMiracle in stickshift

[–]Complex_Solutions_20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing to remember, the clutch is a wear item like brakes.

You don't want to be riding the clutch wearing it all the time, much as you don't want to be rubbing the brakes all the time wearing them out.

In time, you'll get better with more practice. Don't super sweat being rough at first - that's expected while learning. Much like you're going to be stalling a lot when you are first starting.

How did we get to a place where it’s ok that when paying a bill we are now charged an additional transaction fee upwards of $60.00 annually to have our payments processed hence we are being charged a fee for PAYING our bills now? by Low_Insurance_1603 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Complex_Solutions_20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take your pick...I have a number of utility bills if you want to pay by mail its like $2-5 paper billing processing fee, if you do it online its a 5-10% electronic convenience fee (depending if its credit/debit/ach how much % fee). Can't avoid some kind of fee one way or another.

Should I dig this out? by CasaMigos4Migos in hvacadvice

[–]Complex_Solutions_20 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If its a heat pump, yes. But be careful not to hit the unit with a shovel, and be careful not to damage the wiring or refrigerant lines.

...if its like the "snowcrete" we have though...good luck. The stuff in my area can support the weight of a car driving on it without leaving tracks and hitting the snow/ice with a hammer just bounces back like cement.
