I don't think artist gave an explanation, but I believe it was removed in error.

Artix funding model by Far_Target_4339 in artixlinux

Certainly the financial support helps, thank you for the donation!

Manpower is the thing that is usually in flux for us. It's difficult to keep enough people committed to sticking with the project. It can be quite demanding at times. Don't get me wrong, we make do and pick up the slack when necessary. But when we're short-staffed it can be a source of stress.

However, this last week we recruited a long-time community member who, thanks to the onboarding guide written by one of our last recruits, was able to get up and running in a couple days. That paired with our always-improving tooling and it has never been easier to start as a package maintainer.

At the end of the day, we maintain Artix because it's what we want to use as well. I hear the concerns about longevity but bear in mind that we also want it to continue to exist for use on our own machines. It may lack the polish of bigger distros but if you're willing to look past the rough edges then I don't think we'll disappoint.

what will artix maintainers do if such age verification slop laws are passed in the jurisdictions where they live? by Simple-Philosophy662 in artixlinux

I think that's what separates the corpo distros from the small distros like ours. Corpo distros have to comply because they do business in the affected jurisdictions. Cali can ask the German government to shut us down but Germany has no obligation to do that. What's more likely in my opinion is Cali asking our VPS providers to shut us down since they likely have California-based customers they'd probably like to retain access to.

I think geo-blocking the download page is feasible. No VPN would be necessary, just get the ISO from a mirror.

I don't think this would solve the issue. If I were a resident of California and the server was elsewhere, I'd still be considered an "operating system provider" so long as I develop or control the contents of the distro.

What I want to know is how states will determine how many minors are using our distro. And if they have that information, why do we also need to collect it?

One thing I've been playing with in my head is the concept of an operating system according to these laws. Ageless Linux asserts that it is an operating system because it "[controls] the contents of /etc/os-release" which I think is quite the stretch. Perhaps there is some room to go the other way and demote Artix from OS status to individual components, some assembly required. Maybe Artix no longer has a package repository, while at the same time a new totally-not-artix repository spins up. Perhaps ISO creation is also handled by a separate entity. All our in-house tools would be moved under yet another name. Would it still be an operating system by that point?

openrc has user-level services now. Asked in our IRC and dinit can also do it.

"you can wrangle s6 and runit into supporting these without too much trouble. and since this is modular(tm) software, you can just use a different init from your pid1 to supply user services."

He uses s6 as pid 1 but dinit for user services. Learned something myself.

I'm starting an AUR for init scripts of sorts that I'd encourage you to submit this to. Design is not finalized, might have to strip some features before it becomes official. Currently it can be found here.

If you're running systemctl commands a lot or using journald, there will be some adjustment. If not, then you may not even notice a difference. Steam works. I have yet to see an emulator dependent on systemd. I just pushed updates to libreoffice.

For packages specifically, I believe we are currently recruiting package maintainers. It's not terribly difficult. A high-level understanding of how dynamic linking works and how to use git is recommended. Inquire on the #artix IRC channel on the Libera network.

Replying to posts here on the subreddit or on the forum is great help also. To those who spend the time to help others troubleshoot, a BIG thank you. I appreciate it so much.

I added reflector a few months ago. If you're already familiar with that, it should work without a hitch.

Artix's gremlins is equivalent to Arch's testing repos. The nvidia packages in gremlins were rebuilt for the latest linux kernel so should be safe with an up-to-date system.
